Hollenshead: No DOOM 4 at QuakeCon because we “never had anything prepared to show”
DOOM 4 is in development. If you didn’t know that, go out back and beat yourself out there.
But why wasn’t it shown at QuakeCon earlier this month? According to id’s CEO Todd Hollenshead, speaking to VG247 at the event, there was one very simple reason.
“We just never had anything prepared to show for it,” he said.
“It wasn’t like we were going to, and then decided not to. It’s just that the idea is that we want game development to get far along enough that we have something that we feel is representative of a game that we’re going to make and what the final game is going to be.”
Hollenshead did insist the company will about the game a lot more at QuakeCon next year.
“We have a lot of stuff to talk about that’s coming well before the Doom stuff. And it probably makes more sense to talk about it at QuakeCon next year, given that we’ve got Wolfenstein and RAGE. So I think Doom sort of deserves its own spotlight,” he added.

No Doom 4 announcements at QuakeCon this year

Todd Hollenshead has told QuakeCon attendees that no Doom 4 information will be doled out this year. However, if you still care next year, expect more news at QuakeCon 2010.
“When we show it to you you’re gonna love it,” he said before turning the floor over to John Carmack.
Carmack did happen to say that id is taking the most tightly managed approach to the game, ever, and ongoing work with the Tech 5 engine has helped with the game.
Apparently, the development tools and technology for Doom 4 are a go, so there will be no need to create anything for game while its being developed.
John Carmack is still talking, so head on over to our liveblog here.

Quakecon – No “major announcements” in press conf, says Willits
There will be no “major announcements” in tonight’s Quakecon keynote, id super-boss Tim Willits said at the Texan event today.
The exec said that the press conference will instead focus on updates for already-announced games.
And that means no DOOM 4 for you, Ringo.
Willits dropped the tidbits in an overheard press room chat. The walls have ears, Tim.
We’ll be liveblogging Quakecon’s opening speech from 9.30pm BST tonight. Get more details on that here.

Carmack: RAGE won’t work too well on 3 DVD’s, Doom 4 will

id Software’s John Carmack has been discussing multiplatform trade-off’s with GameInformer and has said that putting RAGE on 3 DVD’s on Xbox 360 is a problem as the nature of the game won’t really allow for it.
“We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVDs, which is about the right mix, but the game just…we can’t cut it into a third like that,” he said
“We can cut it into two pieces. We’ve got two large wastelands on there. We just couldn’t make an arbitary cut.”
However, Carmack forsees no problem with Doom 4 being multi disk.
“Doom 4 is being set up so that it’s almost certainly going to be cut up to 3 DVDs versus one Blu-ray. At least they’ve got the ability because of the way it’s structured.” concluded Carmack.
Carmack also compared development on the two consoles:
“There’s a little bit more theoretical raw performance on the PS3, so we’ve got a little bit more headroom.
“The 360 was easier to certainly to get to where we are now. More sweat equity had to be put into the PS3.”

id Software says games come first, licensing Tech 5 engine second

id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has said that company philosophy prevents over-selling its multiplatform Tech 5 engine because games come first and licensing the engine second.
“Our philosophy really hasn’t changed from what it’s always been, which is games first, licenses second,” Hollenshead told Gamasutra. “Working on Rage and working on Doom [4], which are both id Tech 5 games, are certainly our top priorities.”
Instead of handing out loads of licenses and doing heavy promoting, id has instead “seeded tech out to a few licensees”.
“Our philosophy on that has been that we’d rather have a small number of good-fit, high-quality developer licensees than a bunch that aren’t really good fits or that may not be that bright of a licensee anyway.
“We think that the licensees…are going to have an impact on how the technology is perceived.”

Hollenshead: Doom 4 is “not a sequel” or a reboot

id boss Todd Hollenshead has told GameSpot that Doom 4 is “not a sequel to Doom 3, but it’s not a reboot either”.
“Doom 3 was sort of a reboot,” he added.
“It’s a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back. So I’ll just have to leave it at that.”
Don’t fret, though. It’s still Doom.
“It’s very much deep in development. But everything I’ve seen on it is classic Doom, so I don’t really have worries that people aren’t going to like it and start talking about it,” he said.
So, it’s not a sequel and it’s not a reboot, but it’s “classic Doom”. It’s Doom, then.

DOOM 4 to feature mix of military and civilian fighters

In a yanked interview with GGL Wire, actor Brad Hawkins has revealed that DOOM 4 is to feature distinct civilian and military groups.
The piece has been pulled from both the site and Google’s cache, according to this RPS story, but Slashdot saved the day with some swift cut and pasting:
“‘[Filmmaker Mark Bristol] was very specific on the civilians having a certain personality and the military characters having a separate one as well. The body language of the civilians is less, well, “trained.” They carry their guns in a looser fashion and are a little sloppier when they run, a little more freestyle. The military characters are sharp as razors, with very swift moves, exact hand positioning and can turn on a dime.’”
This is the summary total of everything known about the game so far. Don’t hide it, id. You can’t beat the internet.

British Fantasy author Graham Joyce to write new Doom
CVG has learned that Fantasy award winning author Graham Joyce is writing id Software’s Doom 4.
When the site contacted Joyce, all he would say was “I can say that ID have hired me to help develop the storyline potential.”
CVG is insistent that Joyce is the main author, however.
id Software announced Doom 4 in May last year for PC, 360 and PS3.

Doom 4 – everything there is to know
Eurogamer’s put together a hodgepodge of Doom 4 bits from various interviews at QuakeCon, including info that the game may use some of Quake Live’s infrastructure, that it will be built so the single-player doesn’t allow the gamer to become “pissed off at the game,” and plenty more.
Read it. You don’t have anything better to do.

Doom 4 to be about “winning,” says Carmack
Speaking to Shacknews at QuakeCon today, id’s John Carmack said that Doom 4 isn’t going to be a survival horror. Stop the press.
“It’s not that you’re running around frightened down to your last bullet [in Doom 4],” added Carmack.
“There will occasionally be that, but it should be much more of you winning, because that was always the point in Doom – you are the hero, and you are winning. You’re going to beat back all the hordes of Hell using all the tools at your disposal.”
John Carmack may have taken top place in the “which developer we love most” list for that. Winning. Winning for the win.

Carmack: Doom 4 multiplayer will exceed that of Doom 3
Speaking at QuakeCon today, John Carmack said that Doom 4′s multiplayer aspects would be in excess of those from previous disc-based iterations in the company’s shooter franchises, but would fall short of the upcoming free-to-play Quake 3 close, Quake Live.
“[Doom 4 multiplayer] will not be as good of a multiplayer as Quake Live is, but it should still be good, and we will intend it to be better than Doom 3 or Quake 4 multiplayer,” he said.
He didn’t quantify exactly what he meant by the statement – whether “better” means more modes, levels, etc – but it’s good news nonetheless. Hooplah.
Thanks, Shacknews.

Doom 4 “three times” Rage visual quality
Although id didn’t show Doom 4 at QuakeCon today, the company did say that the shooter will be a graphical monster, and significantly more visually impressive than EA’s Rage.
Doom will “not be another four-year development period”, said tech lead John Carmack, but will have “three times the graphics richness” because it runs at 30 frames-per-second, rather than 60, which Rage targets.
“You can expect the Doom game to look like it’s developed with the next-generation graphics technology,” said Carmack.
No release date as yet. More on Eurogamer.

id’s Carmack talks up Doom 4 – better than Rage
In an interview with MaximumPC, id Software co-founder and software engineer John Carmack says that the id 5 technology used in Rage has been given such an overhaul that Doom 4 will appear to be an entirely different new game engine all together.
“It’s going to look like a totally new game engine on there, even though it’s going to be built on the four years of effort that we spent developing this generation of technology.”
He goes on to say the Doom 4 will run at 30fps, which is why they can cram so much detail in.
