Analysts: Microsoft’s efforts “disastrous”

A panel of analysts at the Nordic Game 2008 pulled no punches and labelled Microsoft’s attempts to break into the casual market as “disastrous”, Eurogamer reports.

David Cole from DFC Intelligence together with Nick Parker, who runs Parker Consulting, and an analyst from Screen Digest were all united in their condemnation of Microsoft predicting that 2008 will be a struggle for the Redmond firm.

“The trouble with Xbox 360 is it hasn’t managed to shake off this urban, irreverent adult male feel; so it hasn’t gained traction in the more casual gaming markets of mainland Europe such as France, Spain and Italy, where it’s stalled,” said Parker who rather tellingly used to work for Sony.

“And there are already rumours of Xbox 360 being delisted from certain retailers.”

DFC says PS3 will pass 360 next year

In its May games industry report, DFC Intelligence has predicted that PS3 will overtake Xbox 360 in terms of installed base next year.

“The Xbox 360 was unable to take advantage of Sony’s struggles to build the type of large lead needed to maintain a long-term advantage,” said the firm.

The reports reckon Wii will have the highest sales of this generation, which will surpass console sales in the previous cycle by 2011.
