Keiji Inafune isn’t a man of few words and speaking to Joystiq, he discussed why Capcom’s attempt to push original IPs in the past had met with very little commercial and critical success.

The games in question are Airtight Games’ Dark Void and the now defunct Grin developed Bionic Commando which released in the latter half of 2009 and early 2010 respectively. Both the games bombed commercially and didn’t get many glowing reviews from the press aswell. Especially, Dark Void.

Inafune explained that since the publisher was Japanese and the developers were western, it created sort of a rift while working, as they began to blame each other for even the slightest mistakes, which led to the games being not upto the mark.

“[It's] very, very simple: The publisher was Japanese and the developer was foreign. Even inside Japan, when you work in two different companies, they always blame each other for any small mistakes, so that’s pretty much what happened in those two games — blaming each other.”

He went on to compare those development experiences with that of Dead Rising — a game which went on to become a major franchise for the publisher both commercially and critically.

“When I was making Dead Rising, I told my staff, ‘Don’t ever blame the other guys. Do your best, and just keep doing your work,’” Inafune said. However, ever since he’s left Capcom late last year, he’s heard that “it’s getting back like before — blaming each other,”, something that concerns him deeply.

Inafune’s not entirely given up hope though, wishing that someone else will pick up from where he left off, and will lead the charge on development for the series. “I’m kind of hoping that someone will come forth and say, ‘Okay, I’m gonna take over from here.’”

Inafune’s now started two new studios of his own and is mostly developing games for mobiles devices as of now.

Capcom had already said that a PC demo of the Airtight action game wasn’t “announced,” speaking last week on the release of the 360 version.

Why the delay? As far as we can gather, the PC version just wasn’t ready alongside its console siblings. Swings, roundabouts, etc.

The game itself features a man, a jetpack and a bunch of bad people in a spooky special place. These are facts.

It releases on PC, 360 and PS3 on January 22.

Thanks, Hunam.

“We have not announced a demo for the PC version of Dark Void at this moment in time,” a rep told VG247 today.

A Capcom US rep told BigDownload last night that is “looks like it’s console only.”

It was yesterday announced that a 360 demo of Airtight’s first biggie will release today, to be followed by a PS3 tester tomorrow.

Capcom has announced that Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, has picked up the movie rights to Dark Void – a game that is not even out yet.

It will even “potentially” star the man himself.

Oh yeah – and the game has been delayed a week.

Good gravy.

Full PR below the break.

Los Angeles, CA (November 19, 2009) – Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B Entertainment, under its Creative Partnership with Reliance BIG Entertainment, and Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, have come to terms on the film rights relating to Dark Void™, a new property from Capcom. The theatrical version of the Dark Void game is being developed as a sci-fi action franchise and potential starring vehicle for Pitt.

Capcom will release Dark Void on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and PC in North America on January 19, 2010 and across Europe on January 22, 2010.

Dark Void is an adrenaline-fuelled blend of aerial and ground-pounding combat which centers on Will, a pilot who crash lands in the Bermuda Triangle following a routine mission. Will wakes up to find himself in “The Void,” an alternate world resembling a primitive earth where aliens with superior technology are planning to take over civilization. Together with a faction of humans who have disappeared into the Void, Will takes on the alien race using their own advanced technology including a high-powered jet pack to defeat them and keep order in the civilized world.

Reliance BIG Entertainment, the flagship media and entertainment arm of Indian conglomerate, Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG), first introduced its innovative development/production financing deal, termed a Creative Partnership, with Plan B Entertainment at the Cannes Film Festival 2008.

Reliance BIG Entertainment’s Chairman Amit Khanna commented, ‘”We are delighted that our Creative Partnership with Plan B has led to this agreement to develop the Dark Void motion picture based on Dark Void along with Capcom and we look forward to future projects from them.”

“As a game, Dark Void was developed with a wide-screen mentality – a world full of adventure presented in cinematic scope and scale,” said Germaine Gioia, senior vice president, licensing, Capcom Entertainment. “Plan B recognized the potential of our newest property and are as excited about bringing Dark Void to life in cinemas as Capcom is to bring the interactive experience to home theaters.”

The deal was brokered by CAA on behalf of Reliance BIG Entertainment and Plan B, and by UTA on behalf of Capcom. Plan B was additionally represented in the deal by Jon Liebman and Cynthia Pett-Dante at Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

Um. Wow. Capcom’s giving away an actual Tesla as a Dark Void prize. See here. And actual one; not a fake one.

All you have to do is fill in your details and press submit, from the look of it. And be American, unfortunately.

The incredibly vague tie between the car and the game is that the game’s protagonist uses a tesla jetpack.

Any excuse. Enter. You could win an electric car worth $109,000 that does 0-60 in just under four seconds.

Part two of a developer blog for Dark Void has popped up over on the game’s official website, according to Capcom Unity.

In it, the developers talk about the changes being worked on in the game, including the new “hover up” ability.

“Unlike the obvious appeal of rocketing around with a jetpack, “hover” might not immediately sound sexy, but if you think about it like a game designer, it’s actually pretty revolutionary,” says Capcom Unity. ”

“Being able to hover up (or down, or left, or right) basically makes every part of every area accessible. It adds a lot of fun, but also creates a lot of challenges in terms of creating level flow, maintaining difficulty, etc.”

Looks like you have to be a community member to view the video, but all it takes is an email address.

Game’s out in January for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Dark Void’s delay into January had nothing to do with competition, said the game’s associate producer Shana Bryant, but instead it was because Capcom’ wanted to add more polish and a new feature.

The new feature is called Hover up, and was just added to the game a week ago.

What it does, is allows your character to use the jet pack to not only fly, but hover around environments adding new strategy to the game. This ability will have its own meter, letting you know how much longer you can hover, showing depletion and refilling.

According to Bryant, the developers are “play testing it and balancing it now”.

CAPCOM DELIVERS STELLAR LINE UP FOR CONSUMERS AT GAMESCOM 2009
Blast off into the Void before being the first to experience some of the most eagerly awaited titles including Monster HunterTM Tri and Lost PlanetTM 2

London – August 11, 2009 – Capcom® a leading worldwide developer and publisher of videogames, today announced a spectacular line-up for consumers attending this year’s GamesCom in Cologne between 19th – 23rd August. The show will be the first time that European gamers can get their hands on future titles Lost Planet™ 2, Monster Hunter™ Tri, MotoGP™ 09/10 and Wii brawler Spyborgs™ as well as the action packed sci-fi adventure Dark Void™ and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom™ Ultimate All-Stars.

The upcoming title Dark Void blasts into centre stage at the Capcom booth. Creating a thrilling new gameplay dynamic for the third-person shooter experience, gamers will defy gravity with Dark Void’s unique vertical combat system and take to the skies with the explosive jet pack. To bring the real life flying experience to consumers Capcom will be hosting the Dark Void Body Flying Machine. Situated right outside the Consumer Hall visitors can literally blast off in a vertical orientated airstream at 180km/h. Consumers can then leave the show in one of 200 branded Dark Void taxis that will be driving through Cologne, but not before playing the game at the booth and receiving a limited edition Dark Void gift.

After journeying into the Void gamers can dive into one of the most beautiful titles ever created for the Nintendo Wii. GamesCom marks the western debut of Monster Hunter Tri. Visitors can experience the same game that took the Tokyo Game Show by storm last year where the queues stretched right around the Capcom booth with a waiting time of over two hours. Living the life of a hunter won’t be a solitary experience as gamers will be able to hunt co-operatively and form a team of up to four players to survive in a living, breathing eco-system where man co-exists with fantastic beasts.

Adding to the list of debuts, racing game fans won’t want to miss the exclusive worldwide showing of MotoGP 09/10. Taking the series in a refreshing new direction, gamers will get the chance to play a hands on demo and experience for the first time some of the new challenges that reward racing style and skill and not just crossing the finish line first.

Going from the race track to the fighting arena, the upcoming and visually stunning Wii title Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars will have fighting game fans’ fingers twitching. Players can choose from the combined roster of colourful characters to create the ultimate tag-team with the likes of Street Fighter favourites Ryu and Chun-Li and classic Tatsunoko stars Ken the Eagle and Tekkaman. Each character brings a unique arsenal of moves, including spectacular hyper-combos that literally take over the screen with devastating results.

European gamers will be able to experience the highly anticipated extensive multiplayer action of Lost Planet 2 as the title makes its worldwide debut on the PLAYSTATION®3. This impressive next instalment sees a return to the Lost Planet but offers gamers a series of totally new epic challenges with battles erupting on a planetary scale. Players will need to journey across a range of harsh environments and defeat giant Akrid in explosive four player co-operative play where skill and team work will be tested like never before in an epic fight for survival.

Also available to European gamers for the first time is Spyborgs, the upcoming beat-em-up brawler coming exclusively to the Wii. Designed around the two-player co-operative experience, gamers will need to slash and pummel their way through hordes of mechanized enemies and wickedly challenging boss battles.

To complete the line-up Capcom has teamed up with Intel to bring visitors to GamesCom the fear they’ll never forget. PC gamers can be among the first to experience the survival horrors of the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 5 for PC. Intel will be showing the game which takes full advantage of the intelligent multi-core technology in the Intel® Core™ i7 processors on a series of high spec PC’s in their dedicated RE5 booth situated in Hall 9.1, 61A.

Capcom’s Booth is situated in Hall 6.1, corridor A, No 31. For more information on any of the playable titles head to www.capcom-europe.com The press kit for GamesCom will be available to download on 19th August from www.capcomeuro-press.com

“The move will be great for the game and for gamers,” he told Joystiq. “Less competition in the market (curse you, Halo!), more time for polish.”

Capcom’s confirmed to VG247 that Dark Void will be a simultaneous ship for both PC and console.

Unless we’re very much mistaken, this is the first time the company’s matched SKUs in this way.

The Airtight Games project – which was looking mighty fine in its E3 videos – will release on PC, PS3 and 360 in 2009. There’s no specific date as yet.

The firm’s stepping up its PC efforts significantly this year, with computer versions of Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 5 and Bionic Commando all on the slate.
