A tweet from Internet sleuth Superannuation points to a resume which suggests Visceral is either working on a follow-up to Dante’s Inferno or, at the very least, hired someone to write the script for it.

According to a resume posted by Joshua Ruben on his blog, who is also currently “creating a major new unannounced IP for a AAA game company”, was “the sole writer for a Major Unannounced Sequel” from Visceral Games. Ruben then linked a hint to the game, which when clicked, points to the Super Bowl commercial for the original Dante’s Inferno.

Both Visceral and EA have been mum regarding a possible sequel to the 2010 actioner, and when asked about the possibility last year, Visceral said a decision on the sequel was to be made by “higher ups.”

Earlier in 2010, the game’s executive producer, Jonathan Knight, said there weren’t plans at the time to create a sequel, as most of the team went on to help with Dead Space 2.

Dead Space 2 has been out for some time now, and currently Visceral is working on “a bold new IP”. Dante’s Inferno would not fall into that category, so, it’s likely the team is working on more than one thing at present.

We’ll send a mail, but we honestly don’t expect anyone to be too forthcoming with information.

Visceral has said a sequel to Dante’s Inferno is not currently in the cards for the team, which has been busy working on Dead Space 2.

Speaking with Joystiq, DS2′s associate producer Zach Mumbach said the decision on a sequel is not up to the developer.

“When we wrapped up Dante’s Inferno, all the best guys from that project went over to Dead Space 2,” he relayed. “And that’s the best way for us to share technology — we use the same engine, we share technology, that kinda stuff. Most of us worked on both those games. We work on everything that comes through our studio.

“We sit in one building on one floor, so we’re completely isolated. We work with marketing sometimes and PR sometimes, but when it comes to big business decisions — and this works both ways — you don’t see John Riccitiello coming at me like ‘You guys need to change this, you need to change that.’

“At the same time, we’re not making the call on whether we do a sequel. I’m sure that if enough people are like, ‘I got 60 dollars for Purgatory or Paradiso,’ then we would make that game. But I don’t know. I don’t get to make those decisions.”

Mumbach’s comment on a possible sequel to the game conflict with rumors back in May there was a Dante’s Inferno 2 in the works, thanks to a job listing posted for the studio.

However, earlier this year the game’s executive producer, Jonathan Knight, said there weren’t plans at the time to create a sequel, as most of the team went on to help with Dead Space 2.

Dead Space 2 will be available on January 25 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

The Trials of St. Lucia for Dante’s Inferno will be released tomorrow, and in case you forgot all about it, it’s the DLC that includes the level creator.

To get you pumped for it, Visceral’s lead designer, Greg Rizzer, had posted all sorts of goodies to expect with it over on the US PS Blog, including a nice video – which we posted below.

We had a chat with Rizzer about the content back in March, and you can get caught up on it here, here, and here.

Dante’s Inferno lead designer Greg Rizzer has said that it was a “big decision” to include co-op play in the upcoming Trials of St. Lucia DLC.

Speaking to VG247 during a round-table interview, Rizzer said that the development team wanted to “differentiate itself” from the market, and online co-op “blows the scope of the game”" way up there.

“One of the things we wanted to do was differentiate ourselves from the market,” said Rizzer. “Taking a game online blows the scope of your product way up. So when they were crafting the single-player, the co-op team didn’t start production until the single-player was well along. Then, we looked at DLC instead for the co-op in order because we wanted to minimize the risk of a shipping slip.

“So since this was a big experience pack with leaderboards, ratings, etc., it immediately increased the scope of the product. So since we didn’t want to hurt the single-player, we waited and added it as DLC”.

Rizzer also revealed that since St. Lucia flies around, there were tech limitations to her with her different movements and mechanics. Therefore, not only did she not fit into the spaces designed for the single-player experience, she didn’t fit in with the single-player part of the story either.

Also, because of how Lucia works, split-screen co-op would not have worked for her either.

“You need ample space for Lucia to be how she is,” said Rizzer. “We could not due splitscree for this because iif you try to, you have to render characters on the same screen and in order to do that we would have lost 60FPS due to technical cuts.

“Personally, I miss couch play co-op a lot, but as games get more and more complicated and complex it is becoming where online gaming is taking over that whole genre”.

Trails of St. Lucia lands on PS3 and Xbox 360 April 29 for $9.99/800 MSP.

During our round-table interview with Dante’s Inferno Greg Rizzer, the lead designer told participants that the character of St. Lucia was not just a “reskin of Dante”, but was instead built separately from the main game in order to obtain proper optimization.

“One of the things we had to do was to create Lucia as a separate character,” said Rizzer. “We didn’t want a character that was just a re-skined Dante.

“Also, in order to maintain 60FPS, as soon as we created her and her wings, we were aware that with the inclusion of co-op means you would want more enemies for her to help attack. So, what we did was go through existing characters from the single-player and optimized the enemies.

“Then, we looked for areas where we could save time and space and redo the characters. That way, the game always runs at 60FPS. There was also a budget meter implemented so that when you go to create your own trial, the budget meter keeps the you from blowing the budget and causing the game to lose frame rate”.

According to Rizzer, St. Lucia not only differentiates herself from Dante in looks, but in combat as well.

“Gamers are savvy enough to know when its just a new coat of paint, so we wanted her to be different, ” said Rizzer. “Lucia is an angel and has wings, so where as Dante is 70/30 ground and air combat, Lucia is 70/30 percent air and ground combat. The exact opposite, really.

“So we conceptualized her so that she really feels different to other characters in this genre. She’s light, quick, and her abilities are different, she has an upgrade tree, and she has this kinetic eye energy attack that is both unique and ranged”.

New enemies have been added to the mix as well, and these include ones the team wanted in the main game but ran out of time and space for.

“Because the size and scope of development, there are always characters that you run out of time with, so we finished some of the enemies that didn’t make it into the final product,” revealed Rizzer. “That was a great opportunity.

“One of the things we brought in was the Dark Forest DLC characters, and you can use them in the level editor for your trials. There is also a new one, The Summoner, which was left out of the main game. What’s really cool is that you can tell him which enemies to spawn, and until he is killed, keeps spawning waves of enemies.

“There just was not enough time for him to be put into the single-player game. Oh, and there is also the new Fire Sprite- which is a fire version of the unbaptized babies, which we there in as well.”

The Trails of St. Lucia, complete with level editor, will be made available April 29 on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Visceral has said that it hopes the Trials of St. Lucia pack for Dante’s Inferno fosters a sense of community among players with its level editor.

Speaking during a round-table interview session VG247 was part of, lead designer Greg Rizzer said that he hopes the level editor has a long shelf life and gives gamers a reason to keep playing.

“When this comes out, we hope it does well,” he said. “We know it’s different, I mean, Trials HD’s level editor was a bit hard to use, and other games have had user created levels too, but what we are trying to do with Lucia is foster a sense of community.

“When you create the trials, people can rate it and there will be leaderboards where the community can get involved and earn points and medals for trying other user’s stuff. There is also a milestone system, where you play a level 5-10 times you get a milestone.

“Because of this, we hope the longevity is good and we waiting to see how it does. We want to create value for the DLC and keep people happy.

“It is a different product, as most DLC is just a new level or a new Map Pack. It also has co-op, and while not split screen, the co-op is fun and I cant wait for you guys to play because it brings a new component to the content.”

As far as continuing to support Dante’s Inferno with more DLC or adding more content to the level editor, Rizzer told us that the team plans to “wait and see how well this does first”.

Those wondering if the DLC was already included on the disc and just unlocked with a purchase can also wonder no more, because according to Rizzer, it was much too large to put onto one disc.

“No it is not on the disc,” he said. “It is a large expansion pack and it could not fit on the disc anyway”.

Trials of St. Lucia lands on PS3 and Xbox 360 April 29 for $9.99/800 MS Points.

We’ll have more on our round-table with Rizzer later. Meanwhile, check out a video of the level editor in action here.

Unsurprisingly, BioShock 2 made a drill-brandishing beeline straight to first place, while Mass Effect 2, Dante’s Inferno, and Heavy Rain all managed to keep apace in the top ten. Long-legged favorites New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Modern Warfare 2, meanwhile, took second and third.

EA and Visceral put out some new screens for Dante’s Inferno today, showcasing the Dark Forest DLC that is expected to be made available this week.

The screens look rather nice actually, and we have them below, courtesy of Gamespot, which also has a nice preview of the DLC up.

Dark Forest is a prequel level where Dante’s lost in the forest and feeling a bit disoriented and gives you a bit more insight into who he is inside that gruff, mangled-chest exterior.

The DLC was included for free with a voucher code with the PS3 version of the game and until it’s released on both systems tomorrow, we’re unsure how much it will run you on XBL.

Trails of St. Lucia, the second bit of DLC with co-op and the level-editor, is expected to be released in April.

Looks like a live-action movie of Dante’s Inferno may not happen – or at least contain a Dante like that’s seen in the game, according to Visceral’s Jonathan Knight.

Speaking during a roundtable interview back in January, which we were a part of, Knight says the character of Dante is just “too unlikeable” and would not translate well onto the big screen.

“Our version of Dante is a dark, troubled character, he said (via That VideoGameBlog). “At the beginning of the game, he’s fairly unlikeable. He’s done a lot of bad things [and] there’s a lot about him to not like for sure. I think that’s something you could only do in a game.

“If our Dante was up on the big screen in a movie exactly as he is in the game, I’m not sure you would make that journey with him.

“He does have redeeming qualities, and he does truly love this woman [but] our goal was to basically make a character that seems like he has it coming to him in the beginning of the game, but by the end of the game you feel different about him.

“What’s cool about it is that he’s you, and you’re on the journey as a gamer so you can’t help but enjoy doing the things that he’s doing. But is he a role model? Probably not.”

During the same roundtable, participants were asked to send over follow-up questions, so we asked about the report that surfaced last March regarding Dan Harris currently penning the script for the film.

Visceral had no comment on the matter.

However, since Knight did describe Dante to VG247 as being “more nuanced” and “less one-dimensional” than most cut-and-dry Hollywood heroes, a character like Dante probably would not “go over too well” with film goers, he admitted.

So, if a movie is indeed in the works, it sounds like Dante will be a lot different than he was in the game.

Dante’s Inferno is out now on PS3 and Xbox 360, and its Dark Forest DLC is due next month.

“Electronic Arts has decided not to release Dante’s Inferno in the Middle East after an evaluation process which is based on consumer tastes, preferences, platform mix and other factors,” said a statement from the publisher, as reported by GamesLatest.

EA’s actions aren’t without precedent, either. God of War was banned in the Middle East for – among other things – having the word “God” in its title, while Darksiders was recently shown the door due to its touchy subject matter.

More through the link.

Thanks, DaMan.

Visceral and EA sent over a friendly reminder that Dante’s Inferno has landed in European shops today.

It hits stores in the US on February 9.

DLC planned for the title will arrive “beginning in February”, and come March, the Dark Forest prequel lands and it’s free for PS3 users.

April sees the release of the Trials of St. Lucia, a full expansion to the game that offers a co-operative multiplayer mode, a new playable character, and an in-game combat editor, allowing players to create custom combat trails, and then upload and share their creations online.

More content by way of souls, skins, relics and magic will be on offer as well.

“We cannot wait for players to experience the terrifying and exhilarating vision of Hell that awaits in Dante’s Inferno,” said executive producer Jonathan Knight. “This team did an amazing job adapting a 700 year-old piece of literature and creating a captivating, thrilling, grotesquely beautiful experience that both gamers and literature fans will enjoy.

“And to top it off, we are thrilled to bring online multiplayer and content creation to the game in April.”

The PSP version lands on February 22, but for now, those across the pond can get it for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Visceral Games’ producer Jonathan Knight has said in an interview the studio currently has no plans to develop a sequel to Dante’s Inferno.

Instead, the developer’s full undivided attention will go towards Dead Space 2.

“I’ve read the entire divine comedy and I’ve given it some thought, but there are no plans,” said Knight, speaking to Industry Gamers.

“We are working on expansions to Dante’s Inferno that will be coming out soon, like a prequel campaign that shows the dark forest and unveil.”

The prequel level the exec refers to is the Dark Forest DLC, which will be released in March.

Yesterday, it was revealed a second DLC pack, known as St. Lucia, will feature a mission creator and co-op, although this hasn’t been formally confirmed yet.

It’s expected in April for PSN and Xbox Live.

In the same interview, Knight mentioned he’d like to work on a Macbeth title at the studio.

A Super Bowl ad was also announced for the horror this week, which can be found here.

Dante’s Inferno releases this Friday for PS3 and 360 in the UK, with a release on Tuesday in the US.

If you’d told us years ago that classic works of contemplative literature would make excellent window dressing for games around which phrases like “gore fountain” and “double decapitation” might be thrown, we’d have said you were completely nuts.

“Years” ago, however, Dante’s Inferno Executive Producer Jonathan Knight was already kicking around ideas for a videogame based on Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth.

“Macbeth the game is something I’ve been thinking about for years, but now, I think the emotional quality that games are achieving and the value level of the acting and the sound work makes it possible,” he told Industry Gamers.

“The thing is, the unique quality of games is being interactive; it’s about action and killing things and pursuing those mechanics is tricky when bringing in classic media; Dante’s is more of a violent interpretation of the poem for example. Macbeth would be great, though; there are witches and a supernatural experience along with plenty of intrigue and murder.”

We, personally, can’t wait to confront a 40 foot-tall, rocket-spewing Macduff at the game’s conclusion. “Hohoho,” he’ll bellow. “Your blows are weak. They are but sound and fury, signifying nothing!” Then he’ll launch into a 30 minute soliloquy.

Looks like a leaked-featurette for Dante’s Inferno has been released, via NeoGAF, showing off upcoming DLC called the Trials of St. Lucia – complete with co-op and a customizable mission maker.

According to the video up on D’toid – which will probably get pulled if it is indeed a leak – the second player will take on the role of St. Lucia and with the mission creator, you can craft levels for Dante to hack his way through.

We’ll contact EA and make sure this isn’t part of the Fraud campaign it’s doing at the moment, which considering how well the Dante team has made us laugh in the past with its shenanigans – it’s quite possible, so pardon us for being a bit suspicious.

The first bit of DLC expected for the game will land in March, concentrating on the Dark Forrest -which is a prequel level. It’s included for free with the PS3 version, and will also be made available on Xbox 360.

The St. Lucia pack is expected to arrive on PSN and XBL April 29 and it looks the bees knees.

EA’s announced it’ll be airing a Dante’s Inferno ad during the Super Bowl this Sunday.

It’ll take place during American Football’s biggest match, which will also be the company’s first ever commercial during the event.

It’s hoped it’ll provide a “big punch”, according to Visceral.

“As someone who makes games it’s very exciting and a real pleasure to see the marketing side of the organisation step up and put so much emphasis into launching this product so we can get it out to a new audience,” said the studio’s senior VP, Nick Earl, speaking to GI.

The game’s out in the UK on Friday and next Tuesday in the US for PS3 and 360. A PSP version is also due, but no exact date’s been given.

Go buy it. No, seriously, go buy it.

Super Bowl PR below.

EA SENDS FOOTBALL FANS TO HELL WITH ‘DANTE’S INFERNO’ IN COMPANY’S FIRST SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL
30-Second Spot Introduces 100M Viewers to Hell in Fourth Quarter of Super Bowl XLIV

Guildford, UK. – February 1, 2010 – As the New Orleans Saints make their Super Bowl debut, so does Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS). On Super Bowl Sunday, two days before the game hits store shelves, EA will introduce football fans to Dante’s Inferno, a third-person action-adventure videogame, with the company’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial. The hellish 30-second spot features Dante’s Inferno, a stunning HD game inspired by the first part of ‘The Divine Comedy’ written by 13th Century Italian poet Dante Alighieri. The ad entitled “Hell Awaits” premieres during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLIV broadcast on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010. Dante’s Inferno from EA will be in stores on Feb. 9, 2010.

As traditional advertisers withdraw from this year’s big game, EA – a leading interactive entertainment software company – will use the Super Bowl as a platform to expose nearly 100 million viewers to Dante’s Inferno within the coveted 18-34 year old male demographic. EA joins perennial advertisers Anheuser-Busch and Mazda as well as other newcomers to the Super Bowl advertising scene such as Time Warner cable channel TruTV, Sprint Nextel’s Boost Mobile and Kia Motors.

“Even within the spectrum of live sports events, the Super Bowl stands apart, almost as a national holiday,” said Frank Gibeau, president at EA. “The Super Bowl is a bull’s-eye in terms of cross-over to our core demographic and the reach is outstanding. Not only does it draw 100 million viewers, but most people watch the Super Bowl live, a rarity in the world of DVRs. While digital outreach to Facebook, Twitter, and online bloggers is a core part of our marketing strategy, we felt that advertising during the Super Bowl is an excellent way to introduce this new IP to a massive cross-section of people who are likely already familiar with the dark and twisted “Divine Comedy.”

EA’s Super Bowl advertisement caps off a breakthrough marketing campaign crafted to cut through the noise and support the launch of this all-new videogame property amongst 18-34 year old action fans. With a focus on engaging fans, EA used digital media, bloggers and community for the Dante’s Inferno marketing campaign. The company brought the tagline “Go to Hell” to life using several innovative programs:

• ‘Go to Hell’ Facebook App – With over 4.5 million active users, this free app takes the poem’s nine circles of hell and brings them into everyday life. With the click of a button, anyone can send a friend foe, place, product or brand to one of the nine circles of hell. Angry at your mom for grounding you? Send her to ‘Treachery’. Mad at your ex- for cheating? Send them to ‘Lust’.
• Special Edition Book – EA is releasing a special edition of Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno” in partnership with Random House and Del Rey Books. The book features an introduction written by the EA executive producer Jonathan Knight, and a 16-page, full-color art insert showcasing the evolution of characters and environments from the classic poem to the video game.
• Animated DVD Feature – EA is releasing a full-length animated feature developed in partnership with Starz Media, Film Roman, and Anchor Bay Entertainment. The movie features six unique art styles created by five of the best animation studios in the business (DVD/Blu-Ray)
• Comic Book – An exclusive six-issue comic miniseries created by DC Comics/WildStorm Productions features the highly stylized artwork of Diego Latorre and written by esteemed comic book writer Christo Gage.
• Collectible Action Figure – A collectible figurine of the hero Dante created by NECAis available as a pre-order bonus at select retailers* and for sale beginning 2/9/10.
• Dante’s Nine Circles Hit the Blogosphere – Beginning in June 2009 at E3, EA brought the game’s nine circles of hell to bloggers, one month at a time. “Limbo” was illustrated with a mock protest. “Greed” was illustrated by bloggers being asked to cash a check for $200. “Heresy” was demonstrated through a fictitious game called “Mass We Pray”. Each stunt set fans buzzing about the core themes of ‘The Divine Comedy’ and Dante’s Inferno, the game.
• Hidden Messages – Dante’s Inferno online advertising will contain hidden source code and ASCII art, further bringing to life the world of Dante’s Inferno and the hell that lies beneath.

With unique and visual representations of the nine circles of hell, once only experienced in the pages of the timeless classic, Dante’s Inferno offers a fully animated experience in which players assume the role of Dante, who descends into hell after returning home to find his beloved Beatrice murdered, with Lucifer seducing her soul into the underworld. As in the poem, players will descend through Dante’s unique nine circles of hell: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery. Each circle will showcase distinct environments, enemies and story elements befitting of the sins committed by their inhabitants. Developed by Visceral Games™, an EA studio, and built on the same technology as the award-winning Dead Space™, Dante’s Inferno will deliver a fast, fluid and responsive combat experience running at 60 frames per second, a must-have for the action adventure genre.

Dante’s Inferno is available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system beginning February 4th in Europe and on February 9th in North America and is rated M for mature with an MSRP of $59.95. Dante’s Inferno will also be available for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) on February 23rd with an MSRP of $39.99. For more information on Dante’s Inferno, please follow Dante’s Inferno on Twitter at www.twitter.com/danteteam, and visit the game’s official web site at www.dantesinferno.com.
