MW2 on PC outsold PC version of CoD4 in one week, says Infinity Ward

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has posted on the Modern Warfare 2 boards that the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has already outsold the PC version of the original Modern Warfare.
This is despite the PC version having the smallest market share when compared to the console versions.
“The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has actually outsold the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in its first week,” wrote Bowling,”making it the most successful PC version.”
Bowling did not provide numbers, but it sounds like the lack of dedicated servers didn’t matter to loads of folks.

Infinity Ward receives Guinness award for COD4 world record

Infinity Ward accepted an nice little plaque from Guinness yesterday in the Activision booth at E3.
The developers were awarded with the world record for “the most popular online console game” due to Call of Duty 4 being played by 13 million people on Xbox Live since November 2007.
That does not even take into account the number of players who go online with the PC and PS3 versions.
Gratz guys.
More over Joystiq.

COD4 reaches 11 million unique players on Xbox Live

Infinity Ward’s Rob Bowling revealed during his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs last Tuesday night that Call of Duty 4 has raked-in 15 million unique online players since launch.
The split is heavily skewed towards Live.
“I’m delighted that we just reached 11 million unique players on Xbox Live and we’ve got over 4 million on PSN,” Bowling said.
Xbox Live has 17 million users overall, according to Microsoft, meaning that two-thirds of users have played the game.
Just to compare, World of Warcraft has 11 million active players worldwide.
No numbers were given for PC users.

Call of Duty 4 stat-watch reveals over 10 million unique users
Infinity Ward’s Rob Bowling has updated his blog revealing many fun facts and figures about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare including the fact that the game has clocked up over 10 million – count ‘em (no don’t – ed) – users.
Other states include:
- 71.1%, or 7,111,508 people have completed F.N.G. – That’s more than the entire population of Hong Kong (which is 7 Million).
- 68.8%, or 6,886,509 people have completed Cargo Ship. This is the same number of adults in the US who were morbidly obese in 2005.
- 46.5%, or 5,654,643 people have beaten the game on any difficulty. This is more than the current population of Finland!
- 2.8%, or 283,632 people have completed Airplane on Veteran difficulty. The population of Stockton, CA is 280,000.
Thanks, Kotaku.

2K and Insomniac add themselves to the no trophies list
Insomniac and 2K have added themselves to the list of developers shy on adding retroactive Trophy support, saying that neither Ratchet and Clank: ToD and Resistance: FoM will be getting patches.
Earlier today, Infinity Ward said that there would be no Trophies for CoD4.
Thanks PS3F.

GameStop to carry AIAS award badges
There’s no stopping “the Academy”. The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, organiser of the self-styled videogames Oscars, has confirmed that US retailer GameStop is going to badge games with the awards they won this week at DICE in Las Vegas at the 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.
This means CoD4 will now carry a badge saying “Game of the Year”. Expect this to spread outside the US faster than aggressive foreign policy.

CoD4 DLC to contain maps, God knows what else
Call of Duty 4′s been giving Halo 3 a run for its money as the most-played game on Xbox Live since it launched, so for those of you addicted to being a pretend soldier on the internet this news will come as comfort: you’re about to get some DLC.
“The upcoming downloadable content will thrust gamers into a hot zone of added combat across a variety of intense multiplayer locales,” said the Activision announcement.
That’s all your getting for now. We have no idea what’s going to be included apart from some maps. What more do you want? Global peace?

Tiscali responds to CoD4 online play blocking
Tiscali’s denied it’s blocking CoD4 play deliberately, following news that the ISP wasn’t allowing P2P connections at peak times. The shooter uses a P2P system for game-matching and is therefore unplayable for those with Tiscali connections during the evening.
“Reports suggesting that we were deliberately blocking specific games are incorrect. We are constantly working to upgrade and refine our network to ensure our customers can enjoy their favourite applications,” said a spokesperson here. “Work is currently underway on routine updates and we will keep you informed.”
Deliberate or not, Tiscali has something of a “situation” on its hands. Check out this 42-page forum thread written by Tiscali-using gamers to see what we mean.

Tiscali blocks CoD4 online play, among others
According to this, Tiscali is blocking online play of Call of Duty 4 (CoD4) during peak times. It seems the problem’s being cause by the ISP severing P2P connections during busy periods. CoD4 and other online titles use these connections for game-matching, rendering online play impossible. That report relates to the PS3 version of the game.
Whoops. Said one disgruntled user, “If they do not sort this problem out, they are on the verge of losing a new customer that only joined them three days ago. Tiscali sort the problem out or lose a lot of business. Simple choice really.”
Tiscali has made no official statement on the matter.

Treyarch gets CoD5, back to WWII?
We can’t clarify any of this with Activision, but this sourceless post claims Call of Duty 3 developer Treyarch will be developing the fifth game in the blockbusting shooter series, and that the setting will be back in good ol’ World War 2.
We’d take this with a pretty large pinch of salt until Activision says otherwise, especially given the Infinity Ward-developed, modern setting CoD4 just sold 7 million units and CoD3 was almost universally twatted for being “a bit rubbish”. Believe what you will.
