Valve boss Gabe Newell gave a talk at DICE 2013 this week, and he said all sorts of lovely things like: the Steambox price point will be a much lower cost than many living-room devices; he talked about how he is skeptical of cloud gaming; how his vision for video games is a bit on the PC-fans side; and how the console transition is bad for gaming as a whole. OnLive’s recent struggles has taught everyone at the company an awful lot. CEO Charlie Jablonski and UK boss Bruce Grove have spoken in length to Eurogamer, outlining many of the troubles the group has faced over the past year. They also look to the future, indicating things can only get brighter with a better strategy.

During GameStop’s quarterly earnings call yesterday, the company revealed it has reduced the scope of its streaming games service, Gamasutra reports. Built on technology acquired from Spawn Labs and Stardock, the cloud-based gaming package will now be restricted to PCs, tablets and IP-capable TVs. The service is still expected to go live this year, and GameStop is apparently in negotiation with a host of content providers.

Gaikai has announced it’s added BestBuy, Capcom, Ubisoft and YouTube to its list of clients, and in the same breath, announced it’s hired former Fox Mobile COO and ex-Sony Digital Pictures CFO, Mark Anderson. In December, it was also announced Eurogamer would be hosting Gaiaki demos, and Origin would host Gaiaki streaming via its portal. Walmart will also host streaming content from Gaiaki on its website. Gaikai founder Dave Perry, speaking at GDC Online, as reported by Destructoid, shortly after commenting that releasing hardware without cloud support would be “insane”.

THQ CEO Brian Farrell believes that eventually, consoles will no longer require discs and will instead support cloud gaming, the result of which would mean a reduction in cost for publishers with the savings trickling down to consumers.
