The annual Desert Bus for Hope marathon, which has a troop of staunch soldiers playing the worst video game ever made for days on end to raise money for Child’s Play, is now taking donations. The more you give, the longer the poor players have to stick with the famously boring sim. With ten days till the event kicks off, gamers have already secured 74 hours of utter mind-numbing torture with more than $2,000 donated. Make someone miserable and earn good karma by throwing a dollar in the hat here.

If you haven’t checked it out already, drop by the Mario Marathon, where a team of ten has, at time of writing, raised $68,603.21 and signed up for up to 786 levels from a range of Super Mario Bros. games. They’ve been at it for close to two and a half days and are over half way through, with only 60 levels still unpaid for by generous (and possibly sadistic) observers. All funds accrued will be channeled into Child’s Play’s coffers.

N-Control, creators of the Avenger, an external adapter which houses an Xbox 360 controller boatsing the ability to improve reaction time and more fluid movements, has donated $10,000 to Child’s Play, and has pledged to donate $50,000 worth of Avenger accessories should the charity “find a need for it” and plans to continue donating to Child’s Play in the future.

Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play charity raised a record-breaking $3,512,345 over 2011. Project manager Jamie Dillon praised the efforts of independent fundraising initiatives for the scheme’s annual growth; the charity recently passed a $10 million milestone. Child’s Play provides games and toys to hospitalised kids, which studies have linked with increased recovery rates. Well done to everyone who supported last year’s endeavours.

Child’s Play has hit reached $1.5 million in donations for this year, the charity has said, with an aim to hit $2 million by the end of the year still on. The group, formed by Penny Arcade, has made $10 million since it was created in 2003. The main aim of the charity has been to provide games and toys for children’s hospitals in the US. The notorious Desert Bus, Penn and Teller’s incredibly boring and unrewarding parody simulation, is now available on both iOS and Android. It’s worth owning just to say you’ve experienced it, but all proceeds from the 99 cent app go straight to penny Arcade’s charity Child’s Play, which provides toys and games for hospitalised kids.

In related news, at time of writing the annual Desert Bus for Hope marathon, a tradition of the end-of-year Child’s Play drive, is on the 69th of 134 hours, and over $131,000 in donations.

Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play charity – which sees gamers of all walks of life and stations of play donate cash to sick children in hospitals – recently wrapped up its 08/09 campaign. The final tally? Excuse us for a moment as we shove aside a few words to make space for this gargantuan number.

$1,434,377.

This, of course, smashes Child’s Play’s 2007 record of $1.3 million. All to purchase games and toys for sick children. And people say gamers are a despicable lot.

Great job to everyone who donated, and here’s to an incredibly child-friendly 2009/2010 season.
