Kotaku has turned up what is believed to be exploit allowing players to favour the odds of pitching a perfect game in Major League Baseball 2K12. This wouldn’t be much news if not for 2K Sports’ annual Perfect Game competition, which this year offered $1 million to the player with the most impressive perfect game during April. The publisher has denied any problems with the competition, although Kotaku has records which purportedly show players conspiring to use the exploit. Research – Cheating in games is infectious and unpopular

20120103biohazard

A new University of Tampa paper examines the results of a study into the Steam community and found that those who cheat in games tend to pass the habit along to others. Researchers checked out the 700,000 cheaters among Steam’s 12 million members, as well detailed activity of 10,000 volunteer accounts, and found cheaters rapidly lose non-cheating friends, but friends of cheaters end up cheating themselves.

Thanks, Gamefront.

Valve mistakenly swings banhammer at MW2 players, apologizes by giving away L4D2

mw2resurg

Being wrongfully accused sucks. Depending on the situation, you could be looking at years in a state prison, loss of  job/money/life, or – worst of all – a permanent ban from the PC version of Modern Warfare 2.

Fortunately, Valve – whose anti-cheat software erroneously tossed good, law-abiding citizens in the slammer – saw the error of its ways, and set things right in the best and most sensible way possible: zombies.

Major Nelson: Shadow Complex cheaters looking at Gamerscore resets, other terrors

shadowcomplex

Dirty, rotten, no-good cheaters beware: The Major‘s got the best good/bad surveillance system this side of Santa Claus, and he knows what you’re up to. Case in point: Shadow Complex.

If you’re caught pulling a fast one in Shadow Complex, you’ll be removed from the game’s leaderboard, “investigated” for a complete Gamerscore reset, and – if your ill-gained Gamerscore is wiped clean – branded as a cheater on Xbox Live.

So yeah. Stop cheating. Otherwise, you’ll get something far worse than coal in your stocking from Chair Entertainment and Microsoft.

Gamerscore and Achievement cheats dealt with by MS

Major Nelson reports on his blog, that those of you who have tampered with your game saves, thus artificially boosting your Gamerscore, will be met with a rather depressing sight next time you log on to live.

“Today we took action on some of the accounts we have identified as the most serious offenders who have violated the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use by tampering with their Gamerscore and Achievements.” He writes. “The steps today takes the form of the following:

  • Resetting the entire Gamerscore for an account to zero
  • The account will be unable to regain all previously obtained achievements and Gamerscore, however, the players will have the ability to gain future Achievements by earning them fairly, like the majority of the Xbox LIVE community does.
  • The account will be clearly labeled as a cheater for the community to view on xbox.com.”

That’ll learn ‘em.
