Thanks to the latest firmware update for PS3, some Call of Duty: Black Ops players have been banned for cheating.

Looks like naughty hackers struck the Modern Warfare 2 leaderboards on PS3, apparently, and implanted cheaters at the top of the lists with massive play time figures ranging in the tens of thousands of days.

That’s unpossible!

While Activision or Infinity Ward has yet to comment on whether the boards will be reset, it is unlikely a ban will go into effect by Sony, as it has already said that Javelin Glitch cheaters would not be banned.

Whether this particular offense warrants a ban in Sony’s eyes or not remains to be seen, but we’d dosomething akin to NCsoft if left up to us.

A couple weeks ago, hackers started fiddling around with a gaping hole in Modern Warfare 2′s command console, and – shockingly enough – instead of immediately alerting Infinity Ward to this exploit’s existence in an effort to preserve the subtle balance of their favorite game, people started cheating. Now, though, Infinity Ward’s flushing the scum.

“In fact, the Steam ban hammer is coming down on about 2,500 confirmed #MW2 cheaters on PC today,” Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling recently tweeted.

And then the camera pulled back, as the screen slowly faded to black. Two large words appeared in the center of the screen. “The End,” they read, while you slumped back in your seat, your nervously clenched fists finally unfurling.

But, just as the satisfied, relaxed calm of a cheater-free world began to settle in your heart and solidify in your mind, the words suddenly changed. “The End… ?”

Then, without warning, the camera panned in close to a gravestone marked “Joe ‘Overwrought Metaphor for MW2 Cheaters’ Smith.” AND OMIGOD IT’S A HAND COMING OUT OF THE GRAVE. Dun-dun-dun!

Xbox Live Policy and Enforcement dude Stephen Toulouse has said that not only will cheaters’ total gamerscore be reset to zero, their gamercards will also be branded – so the fact that you’ve cheated will follow you around forever.

“The bar is a little bit higher than that,” Toulouse replied when Major Nelson quizzed him about gamerscore reset on latest podcast.

“The other thing it does is, it puts a tag that you’ve been cheating on your gamercard. That’s a pretty big Scarlett Letter.”

So don’t do it, innit!

Infinity Ward comms boss Rob Bowling’s confirmed by Twitter that a patch is on the way to “elminate the cheaters in COD4 on Xbox 360.”

It’s Cheat Week, clearly. Only last night, Nelson reset some Gamerscores on filthy Gears 2 cheater accounts.
