Hocking: Amount of studios able to deliver CoD4-level linear shooters will “diminish rapidly”

farcry27.jpg

Speaking to RPS, Far Cry dev lead Clint Hocking has predicted that the amount of studios in the trade able to deliver knock-out linear shooters – compared to the open-world design of his game – is set to diminish.

“For me, personally, I find it much, much harder to become engrossed in your ‘typical’ linear FPS after having worked on and played Far Cry 2 for so long now,” he said. “However, at the same time, the level of polish and execution in games like CoD4 is insanely high.

“My feeling is, tightly controlled and scripted ‘cinematic experiences’ like CoD4 will always remain competitive, but that the number of studios who can deliver this level of polish will diminish rapidly. I think the environment will become even more competitive than it is now.”

There’s a lot more through there. Very good interview.

Far Cry 2 releases at the end of October for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

CoD4 gears up for another double XP weekend

Infinity Ward’s Rob Bowling’s confirmed on his blog that Call of Duty 4 players can look forward to another double XP weekend later this month.

“I’m currently working on getting everything organized and together for an upcoming Xbox Live / PSN promotion we have coming up the weekend of Sept. 12th – 14th,” said the developer’s comms guy.

“Which isn’t this weekend, but next weekend. I will have exact details on what it is in the near future but I have a gut feeling it’ll have Double XP attached to it for all those hungry for some power-leveling on Call of Duty 4.”

According to Infinity Ward chap Rob Bowling’s blog, more than 10 million punters have played Call of Duty 4 online on Xbox 360 and PS3 since last November.

“That’s insane,” said Bowlong. “With a little over a million players logging in everyday for multiplayer, I can’t say I’m too surprised.

“It’s awesome to think that we’re all part of building something so massive, and when I say we, I mean me, you, all of us.”

Bungie: We’ve got a lot to learn from CoD4

callofduty43.jpg

Speaking to GI at Develop last week, Bungie’s lead AI programmer, Damian Isla, said that the developer has plenty to take away from Infinity Ward shooter-smash, Call of Duty 4.

“We have a lot to learn from their success,” he said. “They did some very innovative things to keep people going and their experience-rewards system was something that we paid a lot of attention to.

“I think it’s a great game and single player obviously is fantastic… they did a hell of a job with their set pieces, of scripting certain moments that they were really sure the player was going to actually see and experience first hand. The way that they use those moments to craft the player experience…Halo has a lot to learn from.”

2K and Insomniac add themselves to the no trophies list

Insomniac and 2K have added themselves to the list of developers shy on adding retroactive Trophy support, saying that neither Ratchet and Clank: ToD and Resistance: FoM will be getting patches.

Earlier today, Infinity Ward said that there would be no Trophies for CoD4.

No Trophies for CoD4, says Infinity Ward

Speaking on Infinity Ward’s forums, communications chap Rob Bowling has confirmed that Trophies aren’t going to be added to the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4.

“At this time, we have no plans to patch in Trophy support for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the PS3,” he said. “Much like DualShock rumble addition to the PS3, the support for these new features have come much to late for us to add it to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare due to our current production schedule.”

There are currently about 3,000 “game x won’t have Trophies” stories doing the rounds, but we thought we’d let you know about this one. Because it’s a big game you may care about.
