Activision – Modern Warfare 2 to be the “biggest selling video game of all time”

Activision says that Modern Warfare 2 will not only surpass the success of the original, but will become the “biggest selling video game of all time”.
“Each year the Call of Duty franchise goes from strength-to-strength,” brand manager Simon Wells told MCV.
“We want to propel this year’s title to be the biggest selling video game of all time. That may raise some eyebrows, but step back and look at the franchise’s trajectory through preceding launches, and this objective starts to look viable.”
The sequel’s out in November and will be supported by an intense ad campaign.
“We firmly believe we have the potential to be the No.1 entertainment property of the year,” Wells continued.
“The reality for a franchise as large as Call of Duty is that we are competing directly with entertainment propositions outside of the video game space.
“Plans are being developed to deliver one of the most engaging campaigns of the year.”

COD4 reaches 11 million unique players on Xbox Live

Infinity Ward’s Rob Bowling revealed during his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs last Tuesday night that Call of Duty 4 has raked-in 15 million unique online players since launch.
The split is heavily skewed towards Live.
“I’m delighted that we just reached 11 million unique players on Xbox Live and we’ve got over 4 million on PSN,” Bowling said.
Xbox Live has 17 million users overall, according to Microsoft, meaning that two-thirds of users have played the game.
Just to compare, World of Warcraft has 11 million active players worldwide.
No numbers were given for PC users.

No more DLC for CoD4, says Infinity Ward
Infinity Ward comms boss Rob “Super Douche” Bowling has told the Xbox.com forum that there’s going to be no more content for Call of Duty 4.
Why? Rather obviously, it’s because everyone’s hard at work on the next game.
“Every level designer/texture artist/environmental artist/etc. working on a new map for a previous game is one less working on a map for a future game,” he said.
Activision’s already confirmed Infinity Ward will release another Call of Duty next year.

Call of Duty 4 hits 10 million units
News.com‘s reporting that Call of Duty 4 has passed the 10 million unit mark.
Apparently the site was given the figure by Infinity Ward studio head Vince Zampella.
This makes the shooter one of only ten games to hit the sales milestone since 2000. Drive yourself mad trying to work out what the other nine are.

Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack hits PC next week
Infinity Ward comms guy Robert Bowling has confirmed that the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack will release for PC on June 5.
PC gamers are getting the content free thanks to NVIDIA sponsorship, a nice bonus: the PS3 version cost $9.99. We can’t remember what was charged for the 360 version, as our brains are leaky.
The pack includes the new Broadcast, Chinatown, Killhouse, and Creek maps.

Infinity Ward: 1.3 million play CoD4 on Live “every day”
According to this, Infinity Ward reckons that 1.3 million people play Call of Duty 4 on Live every day.
“That’s just 360,” said producer Mark Rubin. :There’s even more on the other platforms [PS3 and PC], but we just don’t have the same numbering system. Overall, even without the other consoles, we are beating the competition. PS3 numbers are monstrously huge. No other game has come close, either online current, or total unique users in a day.”
Rubin said the level of play had been hitting figures at this level “”consistently for the past two-to-three months, Monday through Sunday. It’s crazy.”
CoD4 was confirmed as the biggest selling game of 2007 in January.

The PS3 version of the content will appear roughly three weeks later.
