Star Wars: The Old Republic has gained 2 million new accounts since going free-to-play, according to the latest State of the Game letter from executive producer Jeff Hickman. He also said that “thousands of new players jumping in every single day,” and the MMO’s “high capacity servers are teeming with people.” This spring, the game’s Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion will launch, and a new customization feature giving players more options to change their character’s appearance using Cartel Coins will be released for the MMO sometime this summer. Ann Lemay, the BioWare writer responsible for the franchise’s first female Turian character, has said she encountered little resistance when creating the potential all-female cast of Mass Effect 3′s Omega DLC.

BioWare is throwing a series of double XP weekends for Star Wars: The Old Republic, kicking off at 6:00PM GMT on March 15. Each promotional weekend runs well into the following Monday, and there are four scheduled; visit the SWTOR blog for full times and dates, as well as details of the Relics of the Gree event which runs concurrently.

Mass Effect: Paragon Lost, the anime movie detailing the adventures of Mass Effect 3 squaddie James Vega, is out now in the UK. That is the end of the news, but the BioWare Blog is offering a Reinforcements Pack for Mass Effect 3′s multiplayer to the first 200 UK fans to send in a photograph of themselves holding the newly-released film.

Head on over to the BioWare Social Network to download the soundtrack to Mass Effect 3′s latest and last DLC, Citadel; it’s free. I haven’t had a listen yet, but hopefully the pack includes the various tunes available in the claw machine in the arcade. Citadel has Commander Shepard acquiring an apartment on the eponymous space station, foiling a plot against her, and catching up with friends old and new. I rate it five fangirl sighs out of five.

All three Mass Effect games are on sale on Origin, according to Joystiq. You can apparently grab all of them at about half-price, for a total of $25, and the sale is valid through March 12. I can’t find any mention of the offer on my end, which suggests it may be restricted to the US. The sale marks the third game’s one-year anniversary, as well as an end to DLC support.

Over on the Star Wars: The Old Republic developer blog, BioWare has detailed the process of creating the planet Makeb, an all-original addition to the Star Wars universe coming in the Rise of the Hutt Cartel digital expansion. Makeb is a beautiful world peppered by towering geological formations, but it has been ravaged by ecological disaster and is a hostile environment. The Hutt Cartel are the main antagonists on Makeb, and the story takes in a rare instance of the Republic overcoming the Empire. Hit the link for more.

Star Wars: The Old Republic players will soon be required to log in using their screen name, not email address. The change is said to be a pre-emptive strike against account hacks, which may increase with an upcoming expansion, and will be made mandatory next month, although players are encouraged to switch as soon as possible. According to Shack News, BioWare announced the change in a news post, but it’s inaccessible at this time.

After a full year of support, Mass Effect 3′s DLC is drawing to an end. To send out the shooter in style, BioWare is hosting a huge multiplayer event.

Mass Effect has spawned a number of comic mini-series, but at Emerald City Comic Con this weekend, Dark Horse confirmed the first ongoing series set in the BioWare universe. Destructoid reports Mass Effect: Foundation is being written by Mac Walters, the lead writer on Mass Effect 3, and will tie-in with the upcoming Citadel DLC. The first issue goes on sale on July 24.

Mass Effect 3′s latest N7 Bounty Weekend, Operation Impact, started yesterday. It looks as though recent losses has resulted in the implementation of troop reinforcements from “unorthodox sources.” These teammates are versed in anti-Reaper tactics, apparently. The individual goal for the weekend is to extract on any difficulty while playing as a Reckoning kit. The reward is a Commendation Pack. Hit up the link for more information.
