Mega Man creator and former big wig over at Capcom, Keiji Inafune said that a bad working relationship with GRIN caused some oddities in Bionic Commando.

“At the end of developing Bionic Commando, things got really messed up between the two companies,” said Inafune.

He got even more candid when Joystiq pressed the question further and inquired about strange things in the game like the revelation towards the end of Bionic Commando *SPOILER* that the bionic arm is partially made out of the main character’s dead wife.

From the Joystiq story:
“I don’t even know what happened there,” Inafune lamented. The project was apparently rife with development issues, which Inafune exemplified with a phrase that represented the attitude Grin and Capcom had for each other at the time: “Whatever, do what you want, I don’t care.”

“At the beginning, things are very, very good between the two companies. Things get kind of weird from the middle, and it gets really bad at the end — especially for the Japanese companies,” Inafune said of Capcom’s developer relations. “They should be more flexible about things. If you don’t do that, everything will become messed up from the middle. And that’s the most important part. Not the beginning, but in the middle and finishing the game.”

Thanks, Joystiq!

Don’t go knocking your router out halfway through a level of the newly-released Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. Capcom have chosen to protect the retro side-scroller with the most hated form of DRM.

The game’s product page on the PlayStation Store is quite clear, requiring a log-in to the PlayStation Network at every play session.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 does support multiplayer – but not online.

Don’t blame custom PS3 firmware for this one: this isn’t Capcom’s first PSN title to utilise the much-derided always-on DRM. Final Fight: Double Impact was revealed to sport the same system in April of last year.

Thanks, Joystiq.

This was never going to be pretty. Following a Sun story this afternoon that claimed Paul McCartney ex Heather Mills demanded a “six-figure sum” to appear in Capcom’s Bionic Commando, the amputee model has said she’d like to appear in a game in which journalists from the paper were shocked at the genitals from a lie detector.

“I know one game I’d happily appear in and I’d do it for free,” she said on her Twitter account.

“Connect Sun journalists to a lie detector machine which triggers an electric current attached to their privates.

“If they tell the truth they’d get a good boy drop. But if they tell a porkie pie… it’d give them a short sharp shock to the privates.”

Mills went on to say the Sun’s journalists would likely have fun at the treatment.

“They’d probably enjoy it and not only would we all be able to tell Sun fact from fiction,” she said. “One day’s power surge from their uncontrollable bullshit would generate enough power to light up England each and every week.

“Now that’s what I call alternative energy.”

The Sun’s original story said Mills had turned down involvement in the game after Capcom refused to pay a significant sum of money.

Mills reacted, saying the money was to be a charitable donation.

Capcom declined to comment on the matter this afternoon.

Update: Capcom just mailed this over: “We will not be commenting on the matter.”

Update 2: Mills has apparently confirmed the truth of the story on her Twitter, saying the large sum was to be for a charitable donation.

The ex-model lambasted Capcom as “stingy” in the process. Here are the tweets:

Got offered to promote an amputee bionic computer game, from a wealthy computer games company I said if you donate a large sum to charity

The stingy company came back saying they couldn’t, what happened to charitable businesses, seems they just want to exploit and give nothing

Update 3: Mills has responded, saying she’d appear for free in a game in which Sun journalists were attached to a lie detector by their genitals.

Original story:

This is awesome. The Sun’s claiming that Heather Mills, Paul McCartney’s one-legged ex, demanded a “six-figure sum” to appear in Bionic Commando, and wanted the game to revolve around a character based on her.

Capcom approached her about the game “because of her charity work with amputees,” according to that piece.

Said a source: “She was insistent she wouldn’t do it for a smaller fee and said the producers should make her the star.

“The request was way, way over budget and they certainly weren’t keen on basing the game on her.”

Just mailed Capcom. In between bouts of choking.

Rumor that a Bionic Commando sequel is in the works hit the net earlier via a strange Morse Code image.

Once the code is deciphered its reads the following in German:

“Bestaetige Ausfuehrung von Phase Zwei Vorbereitet Aktiviere Projeckt Albatross”

Translated into English:

“Confirm the Implementation of Phase Two Project Prepared Active Albatross”

Apparently in the first Bionic Commando, the purpose of Project Albatross was to resurrect Master-D. Not sure if this means a sequel is in the works or if it’s something to do with the upcoming release.

CAPCOM® PREPS A TRIPLE THREAT OF GAMING EXCELLENCE FOR WINDOWS®-BASED PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Resident EvilTM 5, Street FighterTM IV and Bionic CommandoTM Coming to PC Starting This July
London — May 1, 2009 – Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that three of its blockbuster hit console games of 2009 will be coming to the PC beginning this summer. Bionic Commando, Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 will all be coming to the PC, beginning in July with Street Fighter IV and Bionic Commando, while Resident Evil 5 comes later in the year. All three games will be optimized for the PC platform and will have new PC-specific features added to the already great games. All three games will be available both at retail and via various digital distribution methods.

Street Fighter IV features a mix of returning favourites such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Guile along with new characters created for this game, such as Crimson Viper, Abel, El Fuerte, and Rufus. Characters and environments are rendered in stylized 3D, while the game is played in the classic Street Fighter™ 2D perspective with additional 3D camera flourishes. Instantly familiar six-button controls are the hallmark of the game, with a host of new special moves and features. Mixing classic genre-defining game mechanics the franchise is known and loved for with all-new, never-before-seen gameplay systems, Street Fighter IV brings a brand new fighting experience to fans the world over. The PC version of Street Fighter IV will feature online play, higher screen resolutions and three new shaders based on three of the “artistic” trailers released in 2008 that will change the visual appearance of the game: “watercolour,” “poster” and “sumi-e ink” styles. Street Fighter IV PC is scheduled for release throughout PAL territories on July 3.

The first true sequel to the classic 1988 Nintendo Entertainment System original, Bionic Commando sees the return of the bionically-enhanced Nathan “Rad” Spencer. Time has not been kind to Spencer: 10 years after his heroic defeat of the Imperials, he has been betrayed by the government he swore to serve, imprisoned for crimes he didn’t commit, and sentenced to death. Bionic Commando transposes the swing-and-shoot gameplay of the 8-bit original onto a stunning 3D environment of towering buildings, suspended roadways and monorails, deep canyons and sheer rock faces, where every environment is scalable using swinging, repelling, climbing and wall-walking techniques. The PC version of Bionic Commando will support higher resolutions than the console version, remappable controls including mouse and keyboard support, support for both DirectX®9 and DirectX® 10 and online connectivity for multiplayer sessions.

In Resident Evil 5, returning hero Chris Redfield is sent to Africa to investigate a biological weapon that is transforming the populace into aggressive and disturbing creatures. Joined by another local BSSA agent, Sheva Alomar, the two must work together to solve the truth behind the frightening turn of events. Featuring a revolutionary new co-op mode of gameplay, Resident Evil 5 will let players experience fear together as terror moves out of the shadows and into the light of day. The PC version of Resident Evil 5 will feature online play for co-operative play sessions over the internet and will also take advantage of NVIDIA®’s new GeForce® 3D Vision technology (wireless 3D Vision glasses sold separately).

Grin’s Bo Andersson has said that the Swedish developer has started work on three new projects.

The firm will talk to publishers about the games next week at GDC, Andersson said.

He said the meetings are “more to do with what we will work on in 2011 and 2012″.

“One of the things we will have to gauge is when the next generation will kick off,” he said.

“I think the financial situation has delayed the start of the next generation. I’m hoping it will start late 2012 at the earliest or early 2013.”

Grin’s Wanted: Weapons of Fate is due out next week, and the company has Bionic Commando and Terminator Salvation in the works.
