Rumor: Bethesda to purchase Valve?

Bethesda? Valve? Is there something going on between you two? Because we read this editorial by Eurogamer, and well, just look:
“However, it’s also worth watching closely what happens to Steam in the coming months. Unconfirmed industry scuttlebutt suggests that Zenimax – the parent company of Bethesda, which made headlines back in June when it acquired legendary PC studio id Software – is still on the acquisition trail, and has been making eyes at Half-Life creators Valve across the bar,” said the article.
If true, it’s certainly out of left field, but then, so was Zenimax’s annexation of id Software. Guess we’ll see what’s up in the coming months.
For now, though, speculate away!

Pete Hines: Bethesda’s “mature” Wii game is Wheelspin

Remember when, back in May, Bethesda Europe managing director Sean Brennan lamented about the Wii’s dry-as-a-desert pool of “mature” games? Well, for those who don’t, he also teased the “really big” announcement of a mature Wii game from Bethesda.
VG247 asked Bethesda VP Pete Hines for clarification concerning that title, and here’s what he told us:
“[Sean] was referring to the Wheelspin Wii game Bethesda is publishing in Europe (only) and that is being shown in our booth at GamesCom this week.”
Wheelspin is — if the title didn’t give it away — a racing game. Its goal, in addition to going really, really fast, is to “push the hardware further than any other Wii racing game to date.”
It’s out this autumn, if you’re interested.

New Bethesda game to be announced in “the next month or so”

Fallout 3′s through. Over and done. So, what bomb is Bethesda dropping on the videogame world next? Well, we don’t really know. And Bethesda’s not telling. For now, anyway.
However, MTV Multiplayer sends word that we’ll hear something from Bethesda “in the next month or so.” What will it be? Well, according to Pete Hines, it won’t be an iPhone project or Todd Howard and co.’s next big thing.
Perhaps it’s that Wii game we’ve been waiting so long to hear about?

Bethesda: Of course there’s going to be an Elder Scrolls V – eventually

Bethesda seems to think last weekend’s Elder Scrolls V comments were blown out of proportion, so the master of massively single player RPGs decided to clarify things a bit.
“At his QuakeCon talk he was asked when TESV is coming out and Todd replied, ‘Don’t look for a new Elder Scrolls game in the near future.’ He also went on to say how much the franchise means to us and that it definitely will continue. He just wasn’t going to provide any timeframe on ‘when,’ wrote Pete Hines on the Bethesda Blog.
“Todd and Bethesda Game Studios are hard at work on their next big game, and we’re not ready to discuss it. As always, we prefer to have something amazing to show when we talk about it. We aren’t going to confirm or deny or comment on speculation, nor are we going to give hints about anything. If you know us by now, you know we don’t really do that.”
He also noted that ZeniMax Online Studios — not Bethesda — is hard at work on an MMO, though when the big game will be ready for its big day is anyone’s guess.
So, that’s it for today’s Bethesda news. If you’d like to know anything else about the company, just leave a misinterpreted, hyperbole-packed message at the sound of the beep.

PS3 Fallout 3 DLC delayed, reordered

PS3 owners got a VATS readout of 95% on a June launch for their long-awaited Fallout 3 DLC, but somehow, it still missed. Now, Bethesda’s finally pinned down something of a solid release date for the tardy content, though with a bit of a twist.
Instead of rolling out the mini-expansions in proper order, Broken Steel (which raises the game’s level cap from 20 to 30) will come out first, followed by Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt “probably at the same time.”
Bethesda’s “hoping” to finally silence fans’ cries “at the end of September.” In other words, plans are still subject to change. Here’s hoping they don’t.
Thanks, Kotaku.

Bethesda hires new marketing and PR director, Sarah Seaby

Bethesda has hired Sarah Seaby as its new European marketing and PR director.
Seaby started out with Interplay, and eventually went on to work for Gamecock, Virgin Interactive, Take Two and worked a consultancy role with Sega, working on Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.
“Sarah’s vast experience of marketing triple-A titles and her affinity to the people who actually make the games ensure she is an ideal fit for Bethesda,” said a Bethesda spokesman.
Seaby’s new responsibility at the firm will be developing the overall brand strategy.

Todd Howard: “Wii is a kids’ toy, PS3 and Xbox 360 are for evil killfests”

After announcing that Bethesda was working an iPhone game at Comic Con yesterday, Todd Howard spoke his mind on Nintendo’s Wii, saying that he was “not threatened” by the console because “it’s a toy.”
MTV’s Stephen Totilo brought the subject up, and Howard said that from a consumer’s point of view “the Wii is a kids’ toy,” and the public thinks that “the PS3 and Xbox 360 are for evil killfests”.
NewsWeek’s N’Gai Croal responded to Todd’s remarks by mentioning the sales advantage Wii has, to which the Bethesda boss retorted that “the Wii is not a threat” because it caters to games that are vastly different to those his team develops.
Thanks, That VideoGame Blog.

Howard himself is in charge of the project, apparently, although he provided attendees with no specifics.

Bethesda ranks top Oblivion DLC, reveals horse armor’s shocking secret
Animals need clothes. This is an undeniable fact. And yet, Oblivion is the one of the few games in existence that allows players to keep their furry friends’ filthy unmentionables out of the public eye. It’s a shame too, because just look at what humanity’s bizarre innate desire has done for Bethesda.
“You guys LOVE Oblivion,” exclaimed Bethesda scribe “aching.” “To this day, 2 years later. Looking at our Xbox Live reports, every day, tens of thousands of people STILL play Oblivion and they purchase thousands and thousands of downloadable content — again, every day.”
“Yes, even Horse Armor continues to sell daily.”
Wicked.
Check out the list of rankings after the break.

PSM3 Magazine says Fallout 3 ugliest on PS3, but still comparable to Xbox
After a leaked Fallout 3 review from the latest issue of PSM3 sent the Internet into a tizzy, the magazine’s staff set the record straight, explaining that while the game’s PC iteration is certainly the hottest bombshell of the bunch, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are far from unplayable.
“The Xbox 360 version’s textures are noticeably rougher than on PC, and objects in the distance aren’t quite as clear,” read the explanation. “It does, however, boast an impressively solid frame rate. The game is, otherwise, identical.”
“NOW, the PS3 version looks the same as on Xbox, but things in the distance are slightly jaggier/rougher, the textures seem ‘muddier’ up-close and the frame rate is choppier, especially during the last few story missions.”
“So, really, the difference between the Xbox and PS3 versions won’t hamper your enjoyment of the game in ANY WAY. High-res textures or not, it’s still the same huge, epic, absorbing, brilliant adventure.”
So, which version ARE YOU BUYING?

No Star Trek movie game from Bethesda
So says this. Bethesda won’t be making a game based on the upcoming Star Trek XI movie from JJ Abrams, despite holding the license.
“Really interested in seeing the movie though,” said company spokesman Peter Hines. “If anyone can make that movie awesome, it would be JJ Abrams.”

Guild Wars 2′s microtransaction system won’t “upset or alienate” the player base
