London Games Conference to “tackle biggest issues facing publishers and developers today”

Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and the Shadow Minister for Culture have each been announced to speak at the London Games Conference on October 27 at BAFTA.
According to the press release, the conference “will tackle the biggest issues facing publishers and developers today: How to strengthen relationships with their playing customers and how to sell products to them in the years ahead through digital distribution.”
“I’m delighted to be speaking to the London Games Conference,” said Shadow Minister for Culture, Ed Vaizey. “The games sector is one of the most successful creative industries in the UK, but it has been forgotten by Government. While Canada and France aggressively compete to attract games talent, all UK politicians talk about is video games violence.
“Yet this sector should be a dream for a politician – it recruits people qualified in difficult subjects, like maths and computer science; it’s regional, with clusters all over the country; and it’s successful and world-beating. Government backing for the games sector should be a no-brainer.”
Andy Payne, chair of ELSPA, Phil Harrison, Edge editor Tony Mott and Intent MD Stuart Dinsey are all expected to chair panels during the conference.
Full press release through the break.
Thanks, GoNintendo.

Nolan Bushnell is “a big believer in Wii”

In a long chat with Kikizo, Nolan Bushnell’s reiterated just how big a fan of Wii he is.
“I’m a big believer in the Wii. I love the physicality of the Wii controller, and how you can get the feeling of throwing a bowling ball or swinging a golf club. Those are the kinds of games I really like,” he said.
“I would be playing first-person shooters with my kid, except that those are games in which you have to have such fast circuits. My kids just whack me, so it’s no fun – I hate to lose. I like games where you can use stealth and guile.
“As you get older, it’s like the difference between playing squash and racketball. Squash is an older man’s game, because if you’re stealthy and wily, you can beat a better-co-ordinated and stronger, younger person.”
Mr Atari also went on to discuss his past, Wolfenstein, and his BAFTA fellowship.

Bushnell: Online gaming is “not cool”

Pong creator Nolan Bushnell said at a BAFTA talk last night that online gaming was “not cool,” claiming that face-to-face interaction was the future of games.
“Social is buying someone a drink,” he said. “Sitting in a dark room in your underpants talking to thousands of people might seem social, but it’s not cool. The public space is always going to be here.”
Bushnell added that the main reason a Martini is more expensive in a bar than making one at home is because “the bar has people around”.
The pioneer’s current project is uWink, an “entertainment dining experience” where people are able to play games via interactive video terminals at tables.
Thanks, EG.
