Some folks were none too happy about Ubisoft walling off single-player elements behind an online pass, and the company is responding today by granting all players the Uplay Passport for free and canceling the program entirely for all future titles, Ubiblog says.

Yes, Ubisoft is still using their version of the online pass, dubbed uPlay Passport, on Assassin’s Creed IV despite the immense dislike for the practice — even EA doesn’t do that anymore. But now the Passport isn’t merely locking online features only.

Assassin’s Creed is Ubisoft’s flagship franchise at this point, and considering Watch Dogs’ rather wild performance in presales that might grow into the publisher’s next big series should it hold up to scrutiny. That Assassin’s Creed 4 teases a connection between the two franchises should be of little surprise, even as the full implications are as yet unknown.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag creative director Jean Guesdon is confident the franchise won’t succumb to annual fatigue. He believes Ubisoft has the imagination and resources to keep the AC brand fresh.
