The Electronic Sports League and Paradox will be hosting a live event for The Showdown Effect on Wednesday, February 20, starting at 20:00 CET. During the event, 50 people from the audience will participate in team battles to win a share of a €5,000 prize pool. The entire event will also be streamed live on ESL TV. The Showdown Effect is scheduled for release on March 5.

The Showdown Effect, the latest from those zany fellas at Arrowhead Game Studios, has gone into beta. Those who pre-order the will be granted instant access to it, and you can pre-purchase the title later today at here. Doing so will grant the purchaser the Fusion Saber of Light weapon skin, and if the Digital Deluxe Edition is chosen, an additional two weapon skins, two bonus outfits including a Magicka robe, and a free copy of Magicka will be included.

Magicka developer Arrowhead Game Studios has discussed the origins of its spell-casting adventure in a new interview. Currently working on movie-inspired brawler The Showdown Effect, design director Emil Englund has gone right back to the start, to tell VG247 about the studio’s birth and reflect upon its continuing success.

The Showdown Effect is the new 2.5D beat-em-up from Magicka developer Arrowhead Game Studios. It’s one part Super Smash Bros. and one part Awesomenauts, and you can watch the studio’s beta trailer below. The developer has also started accepting beta sign-ups. Magicka has been patched, correcting a number of small issues and prepping the magical blast-a-thon for the most recent DLC release. But mainly why I’m telling you this is because the patch notes are significantly less boring than the usual title update run down, and act as an excellent advertisement for the game and its community. Paradox Interactive and Arrowhead Game Studios have released another live-action video for The Other Side of the Coin, the expansion to Magicka. Apparently, the magicians got themselves “stuck in the middle of an incident with an overzealous member of Alucart’s necromancers.” You can figure out what that is below. The Other Side of the Coin will allow players to don the robes of the bad guys Alucart the Vampire and his necromancer henchmen, and slap around the goodie-two-shoes of the Magicka world. The Other Side of the Coin is available through Steam and GamersGate, and other digital retailers. Play it.

New Magicka DLC, The Other Side of the Coin, launches today for $4.99 via digital distribution outlets. Developed in partnership with Pieces Interactive for Arrowhead Game Studios and Paradox Interactive’s “award-deserving four-player spell-em-up”, The Other Side of the Coin offers players the chance to take on the role of Alucart the Vampire and fight against the goodly forces of humans, elves and dwarves. Paradox Interactive announced during its convention in Stockholm that Magicka has sold 1.3 million copies since it released on January 25, 2011. The game’s DLC has also moved 4 million units, and Magicka Vietnam in particular moved 500,000 units. The firm also announced a new expansion pack is in the works for the game called The Other Side of the Coin, which allows the player to try their hand at playing the game from the enemy’s perspective. Arrowhead’s last expansion for Magicka, The Stars Are Left, a Lovecraftian inspired adventure, was released back in November. Thanks, StrategyInformer.
