Rumor: Army of Two sequel titled “The 40th Day”

armyoftwo2

An anonymous source has told Joystiq that the pretty-much-certain Army of Two sequel will be called Army of Two: The 40th Day.

We should know more when EA Montreal makes its big announcement on March 12.

There’s been some very specific detail published over there. Get it after the link.

Banner on Army of Two site teases sequel

armyoftwo1

Yesterday, EA announced it would be announcing a new project from the folks behind Army of Two next week — but thanks to some sleuthing on the internet it looks like it is indeed a sequel to the shooter.

A teaser banner has popped up on the AoT site , but some digging through the source code found this:

  • Game Name – “Army of Two: TFD”
  • Description – “Army to Two. The definitive third person co-op shooter is back.”
  • Studio Name – “EAM”

All is pretty much self explainatory except for the TFD.

Thanks, Joystiq.

Army of Two’s “homosexual encounters” draw ire from Christian group

armyoftwoa.jpg

The Timothy Plan, a Florida investment firm which bills itself as “conservative Christian,” is warning parents away from EA actioner Army of Two because it contains “homosexual encounters”.

In a list of 30 games deemed unsuitable for children the game is listed thus: “Army of Two: Homosexual Encounters: …Somewhat homo-erotic undertones between the two main characters are present.”

Art Ally, president, of the Timothy Plan, said: “Many, if not most, parents who buy their kids video games really don’t know the extent of sex and violence imbedded in them.

“From drug use, prostitution, murder and mayhem to vulgar profanity and blasphemy these games have become a powerfully negative influence on our kids.”

EA announces Army of Two movie

armyoftwo2.jpg

That was quick. EA’s officially announced the Army of Two movie.

Scott Stuber will produce the film along with EA, and screenwriter Scott Z Burns, him what did The Bourne Ultimatum, has signed on to adapt the game for the screen.

“Army of Two is a great project that has already attracted top name talent, and we’re glad to be working with Electronic Arts on making this hit game into a film franchise,” said Universal boss Donna Langley.

“Electronic Arts is a pioneer in its field, and I look forward to collaborating with them and the Universal team in taking their cutting-edge storytelling into the world of film,” said Stuber.

No date on it. Press release after the break.

Army of Two movie on the cards

armyoftwoa.jpg

According to this Variety report, EA’s licensed the Army of Two movie rights to Universal, which has apparently set Scott Z Burns of The Bourne Ultimatum fame to write the script.

The studio’s aiming for the flick to be an “intelligent thriller,” apparently. Good luck with that.

“The ambiguity of these private military corporations lends weight to an intelligent thriller with relevance to what’s going on in the world right now,” said Burns.

“You have contractors with their own agendas, and two guys whose friendship supersedes all the politics. I told EA right off the bat I wasn’t a gamer, and that appealed to them because they didn’t want to simply replicate the game.”

More through there.

EA screws up Army of Two DLC roll-out

How hard can it be? Very, apparently. Despite saying the Veteran Pack DLC for Army of Two would be available today, this IGN piece says various bits of it are going to be delayed in various territories. For ease:

North America
PlayStation 3 – Delayed
Xbox 360 – On time

Europe
PlayStation 3 – On time
Xbox 360 – Delayed

Why? We’ll probably never know. We’ll let you know when EA’s faced its demons and released everything as it should.

Army of Two DLC on the way

armyoftwo8.jpg

Says to here. Producer Matt Turner’s confirmed new maps for the co-op shooter aren’t too far away.

“There is one new multiplayer map arriving as well as two new campaign maps in the not too distant future,” he said.

We still haven’t played the game itself, so we’ll be reminding ourselves that the demo’s released on Live tomorrow. We can’t wait.

Live Army of Two demo for April 1

armyoftwo7.jpg

EA’s releasing a 360 demo of daft shooter Army of Two on April 1, the company’s confirmed. It’d be rude to not try it for free. Maybe that’s why Live’s off the air in the morning: Microsoft’s making sure it’s macho enough to take everything Army of Two has to offer.

Army of Two co-op region-locked because of connection speed

armyoftwo6.jpg

Says so here. As reported earlier this week, Army of Two has region-locked co-op play, meaning Europeans can only play with Europeans, Americans can only play with Americans, and so on. Here’s why.

This question has come up a few times already… Comments from Reid Schneider – Lead Producer:

Army of Two uses a deterministic (peer to peer) approach for networking vs. a traditional client/server approach. We do this so we can have all the synchronized animation gameplays that exist in the game.

This solution is solid for our game but also exposes us to risk in terms of lag, if we’re not careful. In a peer to peer connection the person with the worst connection brings down the whole group to his/her worst connection level.

While not generally a problem for COOP (since most people play coop with friends) when playing in Versus mode 3 people can be highly adversely affected by one player with a bad connection. We use the region lock to minimize the likelihood of this occurring.

Another reason we have region lock is that there are certain considerations on a territory basis which we need to manage. For example, in the Asian version players cannot shoot bodies due to territory requirements. We did not want to take this feature away from NA/EU users. With a deterministic (peer to peer) approach the game simulation MUST have exact parity on both systems. Thus you can’t have a game where you are able to shoot bodies in one and not in the other. If you did, it would result in a de-sync in the simulation and ultimately the game would fail.

This deterministic approach applies to both PS3 and 360. Something to note as well is that Resistance: Fall of Man was also region-locked when it started.

Army of Two has region-locked multiplayer

Teh internets aren’t happy. Apparently co-op play in EA’s Army of Two is region-locked, so Europeans can’t play with Americans.

The game’s instruction manual informs, “”NOTE: The online game modes in Army of Two are not cross region compatible and is only supported between PAL discs.”

No reason’s been given for the move, but apparently it applies to both PS3 and 360 versions. Just hope you don’t have too many American friends you want to play Army of Two with, innit.

DLC planned for Army of Two

armyoftwo5.jpg

Says so here.

“I couldn’t help but ask what Electronic Arts Montreal is up to, now that their game has shipped,” said Crecente. “Downloadable content, I was told. When I pressed for more details, all I was told was that there’s a ton of it being created for Army of Two.”

Apparently some of the new content’s going to be released today. The game’s out this Friday in Europe.

“Crazy Woody” advised on Army of Two, is mad

According to this, EA enlisted the services of a real-life mercenary called Richard “Woody” Mister to advise on dual-play shooter Army of Two, a man that both helped the publisher with details of the latest battle gear and customized weapons and had rather odd eating habits.

“He’s crazy,” said Reid Schneider, the game’s producer. “He would put you in a hold,” he said, demonstrating how Woody once grabbed his shoulder from behind. “You’d have bruises for weeks. We’d take him out to a restaurant and he’d never sit with his back to the door.”

Read the full thing through the link. It goes on to challenge EA on whether or not Army of Two might make someone want to become a gun for hire, which has to be worth a laugh.

UK Army of Two content embargo lifts

armyoftwo4.jpg

Here’s the first one. In true, wordy fashion, Eurogamer says in its first impressions piece, “On the face of it, Army of Two is simple to the point of being basic, but beneath its veneer of dunderheaded macho claptrap, it’s actually a very clever game indeed. An idiot savant, you might say.”

You might. Go and have a read.
