SCEE: PSP now aiming for a “younger” crowd

How are you feeling today? Creaky? A tad grizzled? How does a bowl of ice cream sound to you? Like unnecessary calories and an increased risk of diabetes? Can you explain – in a few excessively enthusiastic sentences – what a “Bakugan” is? No?
Then the PSP probably isn’t for you anymore.

Speaking with Patrick Garratt at gamescom, House’s main focus seems to be on consumer experience, and adding value to PS3 – whether for a current console owner or someone entirely new to consoles – leading one to surmise Sony hopes its focus on consumer offerings will pay off for it in the end.
Read on below as House and Pat chat about Move, the core, 3D, and whether motion will be included in everything going forward.

Interview – SCEE’s Andrew House

Andrew House, president, CEO and CFO of SCEE, has been in the PlayStation business forever, it seems.
He’s held many executive positions within Sony – VP of marketing, CMO, and group executive to name a few – and he played an integral role in developing the PlayStation brand into a household name in North America.
Therefore, it’s safe to say that the gentleman knows a thing or two about Sony’s consoles and the business end of those products.
Being the inquisitive types, we wanted to pick his brain a bit, and lucky for us he was on hand today after Sony’s E3 press conference.

House: Packaged games “not going away any time soon”

SCEE president Andrew House has said that despite PSPgo and PSN enabling customers to purchase games digitally, packaged games are not going the way of the Dodo any time soon.
As a matter of fact, Sony plans to continue to support packaged media as an “additive to the business”, and according to House, business would have to shift in order to meet a digital demand, along with learning how best to market non-physical items.
“I think we were always fairly clear, as far back as the original announcements, that this wasn’t a replacement for the current PSP-3000 offering, and that it sits alongside that and packaged media,” he told GI.biz. “It’s additive to the business. The early sales numbers that we’ve seen bear that out – I don’t think there’s been a huge amount of cannibalization, and I think those sales have come in and lifted overall PSP sales.
“It’s clearly demonstrated that there is a consumer out there, and it’s validated that proposition in moving more towards a digital download as a preferred means of getting content.
“Make no mistake, when you’re looking at PS3 games and you’re seeing the shift in the sheer size of the data that’s becoming available, the packaged media business is not going away any time soon.”

House: PS3 Euro vid store to grow by “50 movies per week”
SCEE boss Andrew House has told GI that the European PS3 Video Delivery Service (VDS) will grow by around 50 films per week.
“We’re starting out with a really strong offering – there’s plenty there to choose from, a tremendous number of current hits – and then I think we’ll grow it somewhere in the region I hope of about an additional 50 movies per week,” said the exec.
“So that’ll encourage return traffic, people coming back, something new for them there to check out – we’re feeling fairly comfortable about the content line-up we’ve got, and that’s led us again to this being the right time to launch.”
More through there. There’s a list of “launch window” films here. Around 2,000 movies will be available on the store as of today.
