Alpha Protocol gets solid release date, new video shows “a man alone”

alphaprotocol

Obsidian has released a new video for Alpha Protocol titled “A Man Alone”, and we have posted it for you below the break – although sometimes he’s not so alone in it. Rawr.

Watching it, you get an idea of the storyline, get introduced to a seductive militant lady with a Russian accent, and get to see explosions, stealthy stuff and loads more.

Also, it looks like it’s being released June 1. Finally. Europe will get it a few days earlier on May 28.

Earlier in the month it was revealed that the game would miss its spring release and instead land on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 sometime this summer.

The game was originally set for an October 2009 release, but it missed that date so it could get more polish.

Watch onward, courtesy of IGN, and rejoice that it’s finally coming soon. Unless the date gets changed again – if so, we give up.

Alpha Protocol boss – Sex for sex’s sake is “pretty ridiculous”

alphaprotocol2

Alpha Protocol lead designer Chris Avellone told VG247 that, to say the least, he’s not a big fan of including sex in game for cheap thrills.

“I think the focus on sex solely as sex – or more specifically, the taboo it has – is pretty ridiculous,” said the developer, speaking in an extensive Obsidian interview published today.

Spy RPG Alpha Protocol does include sex, but Avellone said the game’s carnal aspects are all in there for a reason.

“I don’t see sex in games as an achievement to be earned, but as an experience, and I think Alpha Protocol delivers it as an experience first,” he said.

“There’s a lot of emotional depth in Alpha Protocol from bonding over mutual respect, friendship, questioning traditional loyalty (at points, quite extreme), and even what I would call ‘no-mances,’ which are devoid of romantic feeling entirely but provide a nice character arc for the player and the target, regardless.

“All of these aspects also change the flow of the game, the story, character’s attitudes, and can cause changes in your companions, missions, objectives, and even expose more of the backstory of you and your love interest.”

Obsidian: Alpha Protocol delay will allow for a “good coat of polish”

alphaprotocol

Worried that Alpha Protocol’s now official delay is Corporate-ese for “development troubles”? Well quit your blubbering; Obsidian’s Matthew Rorie says the delay’s simply about polish and visibility for the depressingly off-the-radar RPG.

“Just keep in mind that, in the end, this is going to help Alpha Protocol achieve the greatest success possible for it. The game is going to get a good coat of polish to it, and it’s also hopefully going to become more visible to the gaming community at large. So that’s a win-win for everyone. It sucks that it won’t be coming out for a while, but it’ll be awesome when it does,” he said on the official Obsidian forums.

So there you go.

SEGA confirms Alpha Protocol slip into spring 2010

alphaprotocola2

Finally, SEGA has confirmed that Obsidian’ spy RPG Alpha Protocol has been delayed until spring 2010.

“Alpha Protocol is a new take on the RPG genre and from day one the team has been working to make Alpha Protocol a truly unique game for players to experience.” said Obsidian boss, Feargus Urquhart. “We’re very happy that Sega has made the decision to hold back the shipment of the game in order to give it the best chance at becoming the publishing success that we at Obsidian and our partners at Sega are striving for”.

“Alpha Protocol has been a very promising title since the beginning of the development cycle,” said SEGA Europe MD, Alan Pritchard. “By pushing Alpha Protocol to Spring 2010, we can ensure that the game will be released in the best commercial release window possible and will also receive the focus this true AAA titles deserves.”

So there ya go.

Thanks, CVG.

SEGA confirms Alpha Protocol delay into 2010

alphaprotocola

SEGA has changed the release date on its official website for Alpha Protocol to spring 2010.

You’ll recall it was initially suppose to hit retail in October.

This confirms retail buzz a week or so back regarding a slip for the Obsidian RPG.

We’ll contact SEGA on this once again. Hopefully someone will respond now that it’s official.

Alpha Protocol slip looking likely

alphaprotocol

Both Gamestop and Amazon.ca are now listing Obsidian RPG Alpha Protocol as a June 2010 release.

Sega’s made no comment on whether or not we’re about to see a heavy slip for the game.

Alpha Protocol is still listed as an October release. Hint – no chance.

Thanks, EG.

Rumor: Alpha Protocol delayed until June 2010

alphaprotocol

Alpha Protocol is supposed to be coming out October 27, but rumors flying around the internet state that it has been pushed into spring 2010.

Gamestop has it up for preorder on its site, and down for a June 1, 2010 release. Amazon Canada is showing June 30, and yet Amazon US is still showing October 27.

So who’s right, we’re wondering.

We’ll send a mail out to Obsidian and SEGA and see if either get back.

Thanks, BigDownload.

Obsidian shoots down Sony tester’s Alpha Protocol criticisms

alphaprotocola2

No one – short of Sony, Sega, and maybe God – knows whether or not that leaked SCEA-Sega doc is real or not, but that hasn’t stopped Alpha Protocol developer Obsidian from treating it as such. (Granted, Obsidian is working on a game about spies. Maybe it knows something we don’t. Hmmm.)

Responding to a Sony tester’s allegations that his company’s suave, stealthy RPG is “barely RPG” and “too challenging,” Obsidian marketing manager Matthew Rorie said:

“We’re not really sure how much this gentleman played of Alpha Protocol, or what his ideas of an RPG are. Suffice to say, the game is 100% an RPG; we don’t really make any other kind of game. You earn XP, you get levels, you choose your skill progression, you modify your weapons, you interact with NPCs (or kill/sleep with them), the world reacts to the choices you make in pretty dramatic ways, etc.”

“As for what he said, obviously we enjoy any feedback that we can get, but without knowing how much of the game he played (and I seriously doubt that someone as busy as a product evaluator for Sony is going to be playing through an entire game if it’s as long as Alpha Protocol), it’s hard to judge what he meant by those comments. Suffice to say that Alpha Protocol is going to tickle your RPG tastebuds when it’s released,” Rorie added on Alpha Protocol’s official forums.

There’s tons more over at Shacknews.

Obsidian: Game story is important as long as it’s not paralyzing

alphaprotocola2

Chris Avellone, lead creative designer for Alpha Protocol, feels that story is important in an RPS, but not so much that it interferes with the game.

“It’s important. I don’t think it’s as important as systems design or level design, but the story is an important piece that gives systems and level a reason to exist, and helps to compel the player to move forward,” Avellone told Destructoid. “Don’t get me wrong, I love narrative and character design, but I prefer to create story and character mechanics that are game systems rather than divorced from the systems or levels — when the story is a mechanic, in terms of reactivity, perks, mission changes, and open/closing of hubs and endgame choices, I think that’s the purpose of a game story.

“When a story paralyzes a player (watch this cut scene, stop and read this book) or has to work to force itself onto the player with exposition, I think you start traveling down the dark road of cutting off immersion and turning a game into a passive experience, rather than an active one. Also, and to cue off a lecture from Ken Levine, I think much of a story or character can be told in a game level or in the environment itself, without a bunch of text or books littered around the game world.”

As far as sex scenes in videogames, Avellone feels that not including real-world actions such as this in an RPG is doing the genre a disservice.

“I think it’s an important step, and it’s not sex for sex’s sake, but it’s part of human interaction that makes you more involved in the game world and your characters,” he added. “Just like in the real world, sex runs the range from entertainment to a symbol of the depth of feeling between two people, and not having that reflected in a role-playing experience feels does RPGs an injustice.”

Alpha Protocol and its love making scenes will land on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 October 6.

Alpha Protocol to contain “tasteful” but “satisfying” sex-scenes

alphaprotocol

Obsidian has included sex-scenes to its upcoming RPG Alpha Protocol, and producer Nathan Davis promises that the horizontal bits are “satisfying” but “tasteful” with no gameplay elements involved – a la God of War.

“It’s tasteful,” Davis told Videogamer. “We do some things with our cinematics, too. It isn’t just like a hand up on a thing! We cut around it a little bit. It’s an American game! What can I say? There are limits to what we can do there.

“I’ve seen a few of the cinematics for those and it ends up being satisfying without being… you know… over… you know?

“No God of War sex scenes! We don’t have that.”

Players will be able to have numerous partners with NPCs, along with female soldier Sie and handler Mina – which will impact the game’s various endings.

The rate things are going, Link will be able to cop a feel with Zelda by 2025.

More through the link.

Thanks, ShiroGamer.

Alpha Protocol releasing October 6 in the US

alphaprotocol

Sega has announced that Alpha Protocol will be released in the US on October 6.

We knew it was coming in October, just weren’t exactly sure of the date.

Apparently, the box art for the game is subtitled “The Espionage RPG”, which is something new to us.

UK retailers still have the game listed for release on October 30, but we have put a call into Sega to double check it for you.

It’s slated for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
