GDC: Age Of Conan “ideal for 360″, on console 12 months after PC

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures game director Gaute Godager has said that he believes that the MMO’s unique and controversial combat system, which has been scathed by some critics, will be ideal for the conversion of the game to a 360 format.

Speaking at a GDC presentation of the title’s PC version, Godager said that the system had worked through a number of technical difficulties in converting the traditionally PC-bound MMO format to console, and that the 360 version would include even more content than the already enormous PC version. A 360 game should be expected around 12 months after the PC release.

The brutal and bloody Funcom MMO, which takes its inspiration from the original Robert E Howard books rather than the classic Arnie films, has now been four-and-a-half years in development. The version we were shown at GDC is looking markedly more accomplished than versions demoed to journalists in previous months, and the dark world of Howard’s books is now absurdly detailed.

Godager explained that his designers wanted to get across the full depth of Howard’s fiction of ancient, evil cultures. “Hyboria is like a layered, vicious cake,” said the excitable Norwegian, “with layer upon layer of dark culture.”

The impressive Funcom engine will be able to render unique faces for every player, making it possible to recognise friends by their faces, as you might in the real world.

Age of Conan releases worldwide for PC on May 20.

GDC: Conan still pegged for Xbox 360

According to this, Funcom product manager Jorgen Tharaldsen has said that although there’s no timeframe on the release of an Xbox 360 version of nipple-laden MMO Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, the console SKU will still happen once the PC game ships on May 20.

Which is news, because, you know, everyone thought it was never going to happen because the PC version had been delayed so much. Just goes to show.

German Conan players will be able to avoid censorship

German fantasy gore fans have been thrown a bone today, as developer Funcom has confirmed that they’ll be able to play MMO Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures on any of the European servers.

“If you buy a European copy of the game you will not be able to play towards North American servers,” said Erling Ellingsen, the game’s product manager. “If you buy the North American version of the game, you will not be able to play towards European servers. If you buy a European version of the game, you will be able to play on all European servers (UK, Germany, France, Spain).”

The game has had “excessive” gore removed for German release, but from the sound of it German gamers need only buy a British version and they’ll be able to play it on European servers. Way to stick it to the man, German liberals.

According to Eidos (press release after the link), over 500,000 people have signed up to either the Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures ‘Clan of Conan’ fan club or the ongoing beta.

“The massive attention Age of Conan is generating throughout the international gaming community is simply amazing,” said Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas. “The game seems to be already striking a chord with gamers across the world and we are thrilled and motivated by all the positive feedback we have been getting from both the press and the community.”

The MMO releases worldwide on May 20.

CONANGATE: Woman make boo-boo, nipple strong in America

Thank God for that. Funcom’s corrected an original post on its official forum saying that the US version of Eidos MMO Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures will allow players to see breasts with nipples. Humanity is saved. The previous post said nipples were going to be hidden in the US version of the game. Funcom community manager Shannon Drake set the record straight below.

“It has come to our attention that the North American edition of the game was submitted (by Eidos) to the ESRB without any server-side censorship:

-full blood

-full fatalities

-breasts with nipples

-not full nudity

The ESRB reviewed our application and gave us a rating of Mature 17+. The full rating with descriptors has not yet been publicly announced but will be
posted on the ESRB web site on 13 February 2008.

Funcom apologizes for this small error (or maybe two small errors.)”

If you’re German, however, you’re still going to be stuck with a censored version of Conan, and will be allowed to see “will have full gore and nudity” but not “decapitation, dismemberment or excessively graphic fatalities”.

CONANGATE: No nipples for US

ageofconan2.jpg

America the Brave won’t be able to see nipples in the upcoming Eidos MMO Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures because they’re evil, or something. German people, also, will have to put up with a censored version of the game, in which they’ll be allowed to see “will have full gore and nudity” but not “decapitation, dismemberment or excessively graphic fatalities”, according to this. Common sense in action there.

Can Americans see male nipples in the game? The rather depressing news was revealed by Funcom community manager Shannon Drake speaking in the official Age of Conan forums.

Conan trailer looking peachy for May launch

Eidos has released a new movie from upcoming Funcom MMO Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures, showing the game’s borderlands region. It’s all looking just swell, and probably worth the wait: the game’s been delayed on numerous occasions. A release date of May 20 is now set in stone, as you’ll see at the end of the trailer, and a simultaneous launch in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and the US is planned.
