Funcom says 400,000 players have entered Age of Conan
Funcom’s announced that more than 400,000 players have now entered Age of Conan, making the game one of the fastest-selling ever for PC.
“The initial sales and reviews are very encouraging, and it’s great to see that so many are enjoying Age of Conan,” said Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas.
“This is just the beginning, and we already look forward to massive updates and cool new features. We believe our focus on making Conan unique and groundbreaking is a key reason for the initial success. This is a focus we will keep and reinforce, and players can expect continued quality and innovation as we enter a new era for the game.”
The MMO sold out before launch, so assuming the figures keep growing the future’s looking very bright. Next stop 10 million.

Age of Conan sells out of 700,000 copies, collector’s edition completely gone
Eidos announced today that 110,000 copies of the Age of Conan collector’s edition has sold out at pre-order, as have all shipped units to the tune of 700,000 discs.
“Everyone in Funcom is delighted and humbled with the historical pre-order numbers for Age of Conan. If the information we have is correct, they represent the highest pre-order number for any global launch of an original PC game, ever, including the original World of Warcraft launch,” said Funcom sales boss Morten Larssen.
Game’s out on May 23 in Europe. Press release after the link.

Funcom gets the hump about cancelled pre-orders – beta now closed
There is a message on the Funcom forums saying that Early Access keys to the Age of Conan beta are now sold out and that access is closed.
“We here at Funcom are extremely happy with the demand that has been for our Early Access program. That demand has been so immense, that we are now sold out!” says the site.
However, it appears that people who actually have Early Access keys are also being locked out. It seems Funcom’s frustrated at people acquiring keys by pre-ordering the game, entering the beta then cancelling their orders.
“Pre-orders on accounts that was later cancelled will have their keys/account disabled,” the site informs.
This has led to several enraged players creating a 34 page thread on the German forums complaining about it, and many Brits who have keys and their pre-orders intact have apparently been denied access.
Funcom hasn’t commented on the situation as yet.

Age of Conan beta hits 1 million, game slips three days in Europe
Eidos just confirmed that the Age of Conan beta has hit a million sign-ups.
“Funcom has not been able to find any higher beta numbers for MMOs in the western world,” said Morten Larssen, Funcom sales boss. “We believe it represents the largest ever beta sign-up figure in the history of the genre.”
Tiny bit of bad news in there: the game’s now down as a May 23 release in Europe, a three day trip from the previously confirmed May 20 date.
Can’t have it all. Press release after the link.

Age of Conan feat calculator launched
Goonheim LLC has launched a feat calculator website that “is a tool for player to explore the various options available to them for their character’s builds, without having to worry about in-game costs to retrain their feats.”
“This tool will allow you to view all of the feats for every single class, and interact with them in the same exact way you would in-game, but with a few extra features,” says the site.
“On top of being able to easily and quickly see all the feats for all the classes at will, the tool also shows you all three feat trees at once for better information delivery.
“On top of all that goodness, you can also link your feat builds to your friends so that they can take a look at what you had in mind. Sharing your feat builds is highly encouraged and people love to see what other people are planning for their characters.”
Wow, if only we knew what all that meant. Sounds great though. Loads more if you click those words that are red and underlined above.

Age of Conan PvP movie looks pretty cool
There’s a movie on CVG of Age of Conan’s PvP aspects, and it’s all looking very good, if this sort of thing floats your boat. Funcom’s Erling Ellingsen takes us through the various modes in the game, including Capture the Skull and Team Annihilation. There’s also a quick snip of Siege Warfare at the end, which looks mental. Have a gander.

AoC open beta starts May 1
According to this Funcom press release, the Age of Conan open beta is to begin on May 1, in conjunction with IGN. FilePlanet’s going to host the beta exclusively, and 50,000 players will be able to get in the action on a first come, first served basis.
“When we started development of Age of Conan four and a half years ago we truly wanted to move away from the standards of the MMO genre. We wanted to bring something new, exciting and fresh to the gamers,” said Gaute Godager, the game’s director. “As we get ready to show everyone what Conan’s savage world is all about, we need final stress testing. Teaming up with the Beta Masters at IGN was a perfect opportunity for us! We simply couldn’t ask for a better partner for this crucial stage of our Beta.”
You can register now. The game hits globally on May 20. All the details through the link.

Get head start in Age of Conan with preorder
According to Kotaku, those that pre-order Age of Conan will get to start playing three days before the poor lowly fool that go into a “shop” and buy the game on May 20. Pre-ordering also grants rights to special items in the MMO past level 40, such as “the War Mammoth and Killer Rhino mounts”. Can’t say fairer than that. You may as well do it, you know, just in case.

Age of Conan PvP modes revealed
Here. Listed for the upcoming MMO’s competitive side are the following mini-games:
- Capture the Skull
You will join one of two teams with the goal of capturing the opposing side’s skull as many times as possible. They will, of course, not take kindly to this and will try to stop you.- Team Annihilation
You will join one of two teams, with the goal being to kill as many players on the opposing team as you possibly can. Of course, they’ll be trying to do the same to you.
Apparently players are also going to get to try out “drunken brawling” in which, “You will proceed to one of the designated taverns, get drunk out of your mind, and take wild, drunken swings at friends and foes alike.” It’s the innovation online gaming’s been waiting for.
Age of Conan releases in May.

Funcom: “It’s hard to imagine a company being able to compete with WoW any time soon”
Speaking to videogaming247, Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures product manager Erling Ellingsen has admitted that Activision boss Bobby Kotick’s assertion that it would need $1 billion to successfully compete with World of Warcraft may not be far from the truth.
“It’s hard to imagine a company being able to compete with World of Warcraft any time soon, and yes, it will definitely take a lot of resources to make that happen,” he said when asked if he though Kotick was on the money.
Ellingsen added that he didn’t see Funcom’s upcoming MMO as a WoW competitor and that is was seeking a different audience.
“We have always been very up front about the fact that we are not trying to compete with World of Warcraft, a game that really is a social phenomenon along the lines of Facebook and MySpace,” he said. “We are deliberately trying to do something different. Yes, you will find many similarities as they are both massive online games, but the two games are so fundamentally different that I think they will live very well side by side.”
Age of Conan’s releasing worldwide on May 20. You can find all of Erling’s answers to our questions after the link.

New Age of Conan trailer makes WoW look like Fisher Price
Here. We can’t embed it, unfortunately. Funcom’s MMO really is very pretty indeed. It’s also very bloody indeed, but you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. World or Warcraft looks spectacularly childish compared to this, if we’re being honest. Age of Conan’s set for a global release on May 20.

New Age of Conan trailer shows Onyx Chamber
