Gore Verbinski: Budget concerns are slowing – not sinking – BioShock movie

Big Daddies on the big screen? Not for a while, according to producer Gore Verbinski.
But hey, how about this Big Momma’s House movie? Sounds like a real winner to us!

Interview – XCOM’s Jonathan Pelling

With the exception of a certain single most popular subscription-based fantasy MMO in the entire world, radical genre reinventions and videogames have something of a checkered past. In the eyes of many, it’s like tracking mud all over holy ground, lighting a national flag on fire, or saying Firefly was overrated. In other words, a criminal offense of the highest order.
That, however, did nothing to dissuade 2K from taking the reigns to XCOM and steering it in an entirely new direction. Bye bye, turn-based strategy game. Hello, first-person shooter. 2K just painted a big red target on its back, angered a bull, then allowed itself to be chased into a minefield full of hornets’ nests. But was it worth it?
Creative director Jonathan Pelling sure seems to think so. We had a chance to sit down with him during E3, and – while we’re not entirely convinced just yet – he spoke with the kind of conviction that only plenty of thought and a determined, consistent direction can produce. From the sound of things, XCOM is in good hands. But enough from us. Pelling’s words speak for themselves. Click past the break to hear his thoughts on why XCOM may be truer to the franchise than the original X-Com, what the deal is with those blob aliens, what 2K’s doing to create a strategic first-person shooter, and tons more.

First XCOM trailer full of blob monsters, win

Let’s say you’ve got something on your face. It’s a little black smudge. Kinda goopy. Your nearby tools are a neatly folded napkin and a fully loaded shotgun. In such a situation, a completely sane person would, of course, reach for the napkin, unfold it, and discretely dab at their face until the hideous blemish was nothing but an ugly memory.
If the above situation happened in 2K’s XCOM revival, however, a completely sane person would also be a completely dead person.
That smudge? Not a smudge. Turns out, it’s a creepy, crawly, and – oh yeah – face-devouring blob monster alien. Weird on paper, yeah, but kind of terrifying in action. Check it out after the break, courtesy of IGN.

First Borderlands DLC announced, features zombies and mad doctors

Being excited about Borderlands’ imminent release is so last week. Now it’s all about the zany RPG-shooter’s upcoming DLC, which looks – to us, anyway – very Halloweeny (tee-hee!). Want to know more? Of course you do! So here’s a description:
“Tasked with keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, Dr. Ned (who is not related to Dr. Zed from Fyrestone) does his job a little too well, creating zombies and other abominations that now run rampant in this region. Players will have to work alongside Dr. Ned as they embark on a quest to cure the inhabitants of Jakobs Cove in this full-fledged expansion filled with new enemies, new quests and rare loot drops.”
$9.99′s the asking price for this co-op undead slaughter-fest. Left 4 what now? We don’t even know!
Giant Bomb managed to scare up a few screens of the creepy crawly content, should you wish to spoil Borderlands’ main course by nibbling at a bit of desert first.
The DLC’s out “later this year.”

Starbreeze not developing The Darkness sequel

Starbreeze CEO Johan Kristiansson has confirmed to VG247 that his company isn’t involved with the recently announced Darkness sequel.
“I heard that there were talks about a Darkness sequel, but Starbreeze is not involved in anything like that right now. We are busy on two projects together with EA,” he said.
Bummer. Here’s hoping Top Cow can find an equally skilled developer to handle the game.

Top Cow: The Darkness sequel in development

A sequel to Starbreeze Studios’ sleeper-hit The Darkness is officially in the works, says Newsarama. The news was announced during a panel at last weekend’s Comic Con.
The tentacle-tastic mobster drama’s story will be written by Paul Jenkins.
In addition, the first installment in the Darkness franchise has gone platinum, and will soon hit the $29.99 price point on both Xbox 360 and PS3.
Granted, this sequel was basically confirmed last year during — what else — Comic Con, but the news is still exciting nonetheless.
More hot tentacle-on-mobster action? Yes please.
No release date yet. We’ll keep you posted.

GameQuarry declares Visual Concepts “most consistent” developer

GameQuarry is back, and instead of using Metacritic data to figure out consistency in publishers this time around, developers are under the microscope.
Scores were given a letter rating. A: 90 percent or higher (2 points), B: 80-89 percent (1 point), C:70-79 percent (0 points), D: 60-69 (-1 point) and F: 59 percent or lower (-2 points). Just like school.
At the top of the list of 1,700 companies? Visual Concepts, the Take-Two studio responsible for loads of 2K Sports titles, with grand total of 45 points. Ten of it’s games got an A, 40 were ranked B, 11 got C’s, 7 were given D’s and 4 were given an F.
The top twenty list is as follows:
- Visual Concepts
- EA Tiburon
- Nintendo
- EA Sports
- Neversoft Entertainment
- Konami Tokyo
- Harmonix
- Sports Interactive
- Intelligent Systems
- Valve
- Rockstar North
- BioWare
- EA Canada
- Criterion
- Bethesda Softworks
- Raven Software
- Firaxis
- Insomniac Games
- Infinity Ward
- Epic Games
