Nice move, OG!

This'll be only the second time Gadzooks has "left" the site. Though at least this time he isnt crying about a Sony-run conspiracy.
stop bitching around at a funeral :)
@Gad: just sent you a friend request. it´s MiqMoq
But it's the internet.. you can't leave.. we're always here. ;)
The comments and forum posts have really decreased in quality over the last few months.
To increase the quality of the conversation, I think some improvements should be made to the whole forum / comment architecture. The current system is a bit too general, where the entire forum is one big thing with no apparent mod tools.
Or we (you) just need more moderators.
I'd be happy to be a mod. :)
The forums/comments do seem a bit basic, much as I love the site. I mean unless I'm missing something we can't even view a list of the posts/replies we've made anywhere?
I would vote @Silk for a mod...
Can't think of many others off the top of my head.
OG is already a mod, O Conner has gone walkabouts, G1GA would be good.
@Silk I think if you click on 'member' beside your name you can see what you've said and done on the forums and I'd vote you a mod just for being an even-handed piss taker :P
The trouble is the Mods can only mod on this half of the site. I can't do anything in the News/main portion of the site. And even in the forums..my only job is to delete spam. I also blast obvious trolling and offsite linking. But the only reason a few of us were given mod privies was to, when we are online, check for and remove spam attacks from the forums.
Pat has said that he isn't comfortable with mod sitewide having power over other posters. He feels there is too much of chance to have them mod abusing their power. As well as some other stuff that could go wrong. I can see his points.
But at the sametime, I can understand the posters wanting moderation too. Esp when it comes to alt accounts and blatent bashing. That shit isn't good for the site or for posters.
But it is 100% upto Pat. My advice is to email Pat if you feel something should be changed. But he has bigger things to worry about then babysitting a bunch of grown adults hating each other over toys.
Anyone who should be worried if 'Logan's Run' was suddenly a reality... :)
Of course this is a worry.
But at some point you have to take the integrity of your site into question. This should be one of the not important discussion points.
VG247 has already changed quite a bit:
T Shirts and merchandise, more adverts etc...
Certain things need to be reeled in before they get too poisonous.
Obviously certain things won't change, but letting rampant trolling for the sake of numbers happen, just muddies a good name...
Legacy and all that bollocks... :)
Where is PS3fanboy?!
I'm sure he can bring the light to the table!!!! :)
The best I can do for you MG.
I think it comes down to a risk vs reward situation. Sure somethings could be better, but to fix those things we risk creating new problems. I get into agruements with posters once in awhile. The last thing the site needs is for someone that doesn't like me to be arguing with me, and feel that I am treating him/her unfairly and because I am a mod no one does anything. Effectivly, your mods can't really mingle with and be apart of the comunity. To stay objective, they should prolly be slightly removed from the day to day conversations. Sorta of a tuff thing. I could do it. I know others here that could. But it is still a risk.
And at the risk of looking like I am trying to get promoted, I agree with you. I think the site needs active watching. I am just saying I understand why that would scare off some people. Thus far, knock on wood, for the most part the site has been good. But the bigger it gets....the tuffer it gets to keep that way.
This is completly true, you do mingle a fair bit.
This always brings things into question.
It's just, Pat is now running the careful balance of 'big website / project' vs. 'quality of forumites'...
Anything that gets bigger and has more advertiser attention runs the risk of being diluted... In quality or the quality of readership. This is just a simple fact, weather it relates to music, art or whatever...
Generally the bigger something gets, the more disgruntled the original fans get. Now, this balance can someway be addressed or appeased by certain 'gestures'. Weather it be through removal of certain obvious troll posters or by dismissing alt accounts.
It's all little scraps you can throw back to the community.
I've said it before but; Dave Cook has a fairly good 'too and fro', with the long term posters on the website... This all helps to increase personal interaction and credibility with fans.
If you shy away from certain aspects, all the while increasing things like adverts and merchandising, you only risk to 'alienate' your original fans in the process...
If you no longer care about them for the sake of other factors, then... Well... That speaks volumes regarding your views of the community.
Times change, money talks, but you can be mindful of keeping longstanding members happy.
Especially when a lot of people are almost doing free 'freelance' work coralating news in the 'news forum' section.
Pretty much agree. Basic forum software and lack of moderation has pushed me away from commenting anywhere near what I did. The tech behind the site needs a real kick up the arse I think.
Plus, the spam barrages that are far too frequent really get my goat.
Or you can grow the fuck and stop acting like a victim because someone has a different opinion than you. You people are fools and this is what seperates the men from boys like you. Can't believe you're so weak minded to let some guy on the internet influence your emotions. But then again can't expect much from someone who chooses an inferior product like the XBOX360 over another product thats clearly better. Tells me the way you think is all wrong from the get go and I understand how you get your feelings hurt so easily and crash into RROD mode.
In no way can this site or the users affect your personal life unless you let them. When you become too dependant on this system you're no longer yourself, you're one of them.
You should join the military...
You have that ham fisted bro mentality that sits well there!
Do you not understand the concept of trying to 'tidy up' stuff to make it easier to post etc...?
It's about keeping your house in order really, that's never a bad thing...
The bigger your House, the more squatters and ass hats you find living there... Have you never been to 'free' parties? Maybe it's a UK thing... It can be great, but you open yourself up to loads of wankers too...
That isn't really what he is talking about TEA. No one is leaving because they got their feelings hurt. But having people troll just for the sake of trolling isn't a great thing to have. For far too many people, coming here is just another round in the ongoing game of brand name waring. Simple Fanboyism. That isn't right either.
It is one thing to say you don't like something, it is rather another thing to spew venoem all of the time. "But then again can't expect much from someone who chooses an inferior product like the XBOX360 over another product thats clearly better. Tells me the way you think is all wrong from the get go and I understand how you get your feelings hurt so easily and crash into RROD mode." ...for example.
Like I said: babysitting grown adults while they fight over which toy is better. And it isn't just you or just anyone else, it is a bit of everyone from time to time. Myself included to some degree.
The point I was trying to make is I don't let people get into my head and I damn sure don't go crying to papa smurf when the trolls come out. I deal with it myself and methods vary.
That video represents VG247 and the woman in the red dress represents the trolls. They stand out clearly but why do you take the time to even respond. You know they're there among everyone standing out but you have to make them significant by focusing your energy on them. Once you do that they've got you in plain sight of their barrel ready to put a bullet in your head. You let them win.
The world isn't perfect and you can't expect a website which exist in a world based on freedom of speech to be perfect either. All your bitching and moaning will do is cause more disruption so stop. This is not your home and no one from here can get to you unless you let them.
Tuff skin and all of that I get it. But at the sametime alot posters have already left. Some of them newer folks and some of them have been here 3, 4 or 5 years. You can't please all of the people all of the time, sure. And sometimes posters take extended breaks and then return. And for the most part, when some folks leave other folks take their place.
But if enough people complain about the same types of things...then maybe there is something worth looking into there after all.
Actually, I'd ban somebody even for mentioning a stated preference for a platform if I had my way.
And let's not forget who was the *original* troll here, after Shatner...
ignoring trolls does not help. it is not a solution. not at all.
trolls don´t hurt my feelings.they can spoil the fun for me though.
i don´t want to start reading the comments and then roll my eyes and skip every second post because it´s just some douche trollwanking a thread again.
i want to come here to discuss games, i don´t want to come here to do social work.
it´s just annoying.
the alt accounts must go.
this page needs mods or it will become like the ign forums one day soon.
nothing to do with being "weak" or "acting like a victim" - if anything ignoring this bullshit is the "weak" behaviour imho.
edit: if there wont be mods, if ip´s wont get checked for alt accounts, then ignoring could really be the only option though. i don´t think it´s perfect, i still think it´s not fighting the roots but if nothing else happens an ignore option would at least help to reduce everyday annoyances a little. would be weak, would be cheating yourself, but i would take it and use it if nothing else will happen.
VG24/7 is my favorite gaming site because it's right to the point (or atleast tries), the staff make themselves stand out, instead of writing the articles just for the sake of it. Also one other thing that I liked was the community, it was compact and you could get a variety of opinions here and there regarding all topics.
I discovered VG24/7 somewhere in late 2010, but decided to join the community a bit latter, seeing it wasn't enormous like IGN's or DTOID's where you can't follow a conversation because trolls and fanboys are on a rampage. Sure, the site need some work to do to make things work better.
@TEA, I get your point but trolls are spoiling the fun, as stated by poly. I tend to agree most of the time with your arguments but seeing your attitude of ""But then again can't expect much from someone who chooses an inferior product like the XBOX360 over another..." makes me think if you are really and adult with kids. I mean, some kind of attitude like that is expected from a kid who is arguing about his toys.
Picking moderators just means you have a select few idiots calling the shots over the many idiots, which isn't much of a solution to anything.
On VG247 you can cut to the bone, without getting banned for not sugarcoating your opinion enough, which is exactly what happens on a lot of other sites. You do have the choice to go to those sites instead.
Gad picking a site he's more comfortable with shouldn't exactly be a reason to screw up this one.
For ages people have been talking about up and downvoting comments, I think that's a sensible way of letting people know they're pricks without needing to elevate other pricks just to tell those guys they're pricks.
The communities on sites like The Escapist or Kotaku just scare the hell out of me. It's like a Stepford Wives scene, full of the same indistinguishable, overly friendly, conflict-shy goons.
i don´t like up and downvoting at all, or no, let me clarify, i do not like downvoting. it´s just another instrument that people can abuse. a yeah/like button like on miiverse would be nice but it´s not really needed. i think downvoting someone without giving a reason is bullshit. i wouldn´t want that.
i don´t like sugercoated opinions either. people should argue with passion. i am not even having a problem with name calling if a straight, passionate discussion is going on. all i want to get rid of is the obvious fanboy trolling, manhunting and your everyday racist sexist trolls.
but i think this little discussion here shows already: everyone would probably want something else from the mods. it could indeed even make things worse...so in the end maybe checking alt accounts and an ignore button could be enough?
i still think something must be done to make this page a fun experience again.
I'm not sure I'd like a site where you can permanently ignore someone whose opinion differed from yours, once upon a time.
Idly chatting with guys you always agree with, will not stay stimulating for long. We all need input from outside our comfort zones.
i don´t want to ignore people that have another opinion. that´s not the point.
An ignore button is counter-productive. Think of some of the longest threads of VG247 history. They've always been fuelled by argument & counter-argument. Imagine how dull they'd be if everyone was just espousing opinion, with their fingers in their ears.
Isn't that just what happens during those 'arguments'?
I'm not for an ignore button either. But I am for moderaters just telling people to cool the fuck down and stop being a cunt.
Downvoting shouldn't hide comments, it should just show whether people appreciate the comment or not.
