Dirt 2 or 3?? Which is better? I understand 3 brings the stunt crap but largely gets "back to basics" in terms of rally. Which I like. I'm probly 50% through Dirt 2 and I cant get enough. Its exciting to play. The visuals and sound effects are absolutely ridiculous. While buggies and Baja trucks are a fun diversion..rally, rallycross, and trail blazing are my favorite disciplines. Is it still as fun? They didn't ef with the physics or anything? Just more tracks cars etc?

I vote for Dirt Showdown.
I LOVED that game.
But if you want something more ... Rally and not extreme, I would say Dirt 2. But really the entire Dirt series is a bit like a nitro kick in the pants racing vs straight up racing. Imo.
It is exaggerated a bit but it still feels authentic. Like a natural evolution of Rally Sport Challenge 2, my favorite rally game of all time. I might check out Showdown eventually. I remember trying the demo. Lots of demolition derby stuff yeah? Fun I bet. I'm interested in Grid 2, but I think I'm gonna pick up Dirt 3..while this rally hair is in my ass :) Thanks for the suggestion OG.
Some Derby stuff bud, but really just as much racing and lots of events to trick around with. Not too sure what they are called right now, forgot sorry.
I am a strange one tho, my fav rally game is Sega Rally(esp the one on XBLA/PSN). I like the racing more then anything else. Pure and simple. It has to handle good. And if I can play it bumper to bumper with other players I am in for hours at a time. Shame we don't get much of that type of thing anymore it seems.
If you have Xbox, whichever 'Dirt' you get, I highly recommend the MS force feedback wheel if you can pick one up.
Cranked up to max and ripping through pine forests was crazy fun, you could barely hold the wheel at some points! ;)
Shit monkey that's the one thing I'm disappointed in myself for. When I was a young lad I promised myself I'd have a game room and racing seat in my house. Well I have my game room, but the loveseat I bought is too big to facilitate a racing seat also. I wasn't thinking ahead when I bought it. I want a wheel so bad. Had my eye on a Logitech. Maybe once the loveseat starts to blow out :) damn now you got me thinking about it. I just sold one of my motorcycles too. Plenty of funds burning..
I just have the reg(here in US) MS branded one. Was very good. In games like Codies F1 it works flawlessly with decent feedback. I haven't used it on Dirt despit picking the game up in their recent blow out sale. It doesn't work with GRID at all, I can't keep the cars on the track, too twitchy. For me at least.
Yeah OG I would think for "arcade" type racers a wheel might be detrimental where quick flicks of the joystick are sometimes required :D unless you want bulging arms :P
Did exactly the same thing dude.
When I was a yout I promised myself I would get a Sega rally type set up. It wasn't quite like that but I did get the MS Wheel and built a kind of 'housing' for it. Was a blast with friends and a few beers.
Due to space in my flat I had to sell it a while back unfortunatly. Still regret it, the MS wheel was amazing. Obviously not as good as high end PC stuff, but for Sega Rally and Dirt 2 the force feedback was ferocious!
What was so sweet was it was very dynamic, once you launched in the air slightly off a bridge or ramp for example, the wheel would be loose as anything because there wasn't any contact with gravel or Tarmac.
Then, when you landed... BAM! :) it would kick in hardcore and you would have to wrestle it back on track! Fucking awesome.
My friends and I just used to drive the big Paris Dakar trucks through the desert stages for hours (never really bothered with them when using a normal pad), and it was so much fun grinding through the desert!
Sega Rally was awesome once you got used to the twitch, and because the levels terraformed each lap and the track changed from mud/sand/gravel/Tarmac a lot, it was crazy fun too.
I heard GRiD didn't work very well as OG mentioned, but Forza was apparently perfect (pretty much made for the wheel).
Great fun! :)
Damn it monkey shut your mouth with your talk of "air catchin loose wheels". Ugh, that sounds fucking sweet. Like the old San Francisco Rush cabinets. Just what I always wanted. That's it, going home after work to do some measuring :D
Lol, I had some fun times with that wheel!
Even if you have to dismantle it in a few months, as long as you keep them nice they always hold there value! It's a win win situation! :)
If you end up getting the 360 official one (highly recommended) its worth noting, it was wireless but I had to plug it in for force feedback if I remember rightly... It wasn't a problem though, pedals were pretty good too, here is a review:
Bare in mind more games are now playable: Dirt 2, Sega Rally and Forza 3 being the best!
Hope that helps and tell me how you got in if you go through with it! ;)
I didn't think Dirt Showdown was all that great, it doesn't feel like you hit the cars with enough force to shut them down like in a real demolition derby, the best DD game I've played is called Driven to Destruction or Test Drive Eve of Destruction if your from the UK. Dirt Showdown needed to have more solid physics collisions and impactful crashes that are at least satisfying and lag-less online. I loved Dirt 3 except for the 'stunt crap' as mentioned before. I thought Dirt 2 was great but needed a little somethin somethin I couldn't put my finger on what exactly.
The verdict is in fellas..Dirt 3 is most disappointing. I won't go into details since no one is super interested but to put it easy Dirt2 = Assassins Creed 2. Dirt 3 = Assassins Creed Brotherhood. Same engine and "idea"...different dev team, or at least it feels that way. Ohs well.
I love Dirt 2. I got it because it was $5 on XBL not long ago, and I couldn't believe what I had been missing since '09. I'm sorry to hear you're disappointed with 3. I've been reading that they changed the feel quite a bit, and that's a shame. 2 is just about perfect in how real and fun it feels.
Yes cobra you and I did the same thing. 3 is boring to put it bluntly. After an hour of investment I decided to quit and go back to 2, and see if I was just crazy. Three turns into my rally I had already moved to the edge of my seat. I guess if folks like you and myself would have bought and played the shit out of 2 they wouldn't have changed anything for 3 :/
