The fact that most companies are afraid of female protagonists has little to do with sexism, but everything to do with supply and demand.
With a few exceptions (Tomb Raider/Metroid), games with female protagonists usually sell poorly. Look at Bayonetta, Mirror's Edge, Beyond Good & Evil. Those games may be good, but they didn't sell well. Suits look at stats, look at what didn't work out and form their opinions. Supply and Demand.
Personally I rather play a male character. I know a lot of men online who prefer playing female characters, for different reasons. But so far I've not met them in RL.
I want to identify myself with the character I play. Physically first, mentally second. If a game fails at both, then I don't enjoy playing that character. Mirror's Edge is one of those examples.
It's also why I don't enjoy games like Gears of War for example. Not interested in playing brainless brutes. Tomb Raider worked because I could identify myself with Lara, but even then I caught myself thinking that it would be the perfect game (for me) if I was playing a male character.
It's still one of the best games of the year. Even though there was too much fighting and not enough tomb raiding.
The game sold very, very well. So we might see a shift in the next few years.
Having said that, I have no interest in playing 'Remember Me'. The female lead looks as shallow as it gets. Perfect face, boring model proportions, wearing highheels and big ass fingernails. Just not interesting in any way.
@silk: "Oh you think playing a chick and not liking to kiss a guy is tough?"
Depends. I don't think I'd have any problem with it if the characters or their relationship were well established. I don't care about most love stories in videogames, because the relationship between hero and love interest is usually poorly established. 'Remember Me' doesn't sound like it would do things any different.
The moment a videogame forces some kind of relationship on me that I don't care about, is usually when I separate myself from the character I play. I just don't care about them.
Did you enjoy playing Fear Effect 2? :)
