Which is best?
I don't want any of that Norton and Kaspersky crap anywhere near my PC.
Or will Defender in Windows 8 do the same job for free?

I use Avira home version, which is free and reliable. Has ads but it's not that bad. And if I had to pay for my antivirus, I'd either get nod32 or Avira, Kaspesky is also reliable but never used it on a home machines.
Yeah, I use Avira as well, and so far so good.
Microsoft Security Essentials.
^^
Nod is good, I second that. Using it for 2-3 years now.
What freedoms_stain said. It's built into Windows 8 so if you're running that you are good to go.
MSE isn't in 8. Defender is. Does Defender do AV?
AVG - 100%
It is the best right now becauser it is easy to use and it's not heavy for the system compared to NOD or Kaspersky.
MSE isn't supported in Windows 8?! Oh, Microsoft. This tops the missing Start button for me, in the growing list of reasons why never to upgrade.
Edit: Upon further Googling, I've learnt that MSE in now built straight into Windows Defender and performs exactly as it did before. Start Button moves up to number one again.
Nothing comes close to Avira when it comes to free AV software, just look at a few AV tests like AV-comparatives for example. AVG is good, but it's not as good as Avira. Been using Avira on 3 separate PC's for around 5 years now with zero problems.
@mathare92, just get over the start button. Like anybody ever used it very often. Using the new start button to search through programs is even faster than the classic version.
Win+D solves any problems with the new start menu.
Well, I don't like the tiles too much either.
I don't either so I just don't use them, :P. WIN then just start typing whatever program you want in and you're good to go for stuff that isn't on your desktop. It isn't much different than the W7 start menu, just outrageously fast when compared.
I don't understand the aversion to Norton, I have had it on my PC for over 3 years, never know it is running, you must be thinking of Norton circa yr 2000 which was indeed a bitch of a program. Hats off to sysmantec mind, updates are like clockwork and the norton report software is very clever.
I would not recommend AVG, it is a beast of a thing and utterly pants.
MSE or Avira were wonders and like a good AV program you never notice they are there.
As for speed, a comprehensive test by toms hardware revealed, on a modern system that there is basically no difference in speed between running a PC with an anti virus suite and one without.
Avira...i work there xD
Thanks for ppl mention it here.
Our browser protection and real-time protection in the free version are things we are very proud of.
I'm gonna say Avira, never had a problem with that.
