Sony Slumps by Most in Four Years as Losses Stun Traders
Seems like that title is getting around. I wonder if there'll be a meme for it.

Damn, I hope the PS4 is Sony's golden ticket to win back some of their market share. It would really pain me to see them back out of the market. But the reality of it is; that it's suck and it's really bad (bad to the investors) when Sony post a profit it's not going to be because their products are a 'must own' or a 'must buy' it's going to be because they sold their assets or real estate.
With that being said, if ever comes to that where does that leave us? The Wii U is not as good as it should be and some third party developers are already giving them the shaft with their titles.
A market where MS dominates is fucking disgusting and disturbing. The difference between Sony and MS is variety. Sony will take a risk and hire a studio to make to some unique titles, Journey, Heavy Rain. MS on the other hand is all about a product selling and selling in the bundles.
These are dark times my friends....dark times..... :(

That is some big ouch. They'll be shuffling in their seats on the flight to NY from Tokyo.
As Mike says, love them or hate them, gamers need Sony. Or do you only want annual reiterations of the same thing?
Posted 4 months ago # -
@sg1974
It is disturbing and even though the company is showing signs of recovery I guess they're not moving fast enough.
I guess the thing that upsets me the most, are these so-called gamers that wish and pray for Sony's downfall. If any one of these manufacturers back out of the market, then you can kiss a good percent of the third party titles goodbye. Those fucking publishers don't give a "rat's stank ass" about our passion nor the developers, that's why a good percent of them are trying to cross over to the mobile market, because it's an easy cash grab.
If any one you guys think that these third party developers can break even on Xbox system alone, then you're as stupid as Sarah Palin and Erthzaus.
And Sg1974 is right and he makes a good point, you will see 25 Halos, 20 Gears of War, 35 Forzas, etc. Why would anybody want an industry like that?

God of War, Gran Turismo, Uncharted and Killzone have been milked to death already, and Sonys first party output in the last year has been extremely lame.
Apart from that franchise milking, Sony have given us mediocre ripoffs of other games and piss-weak QTE/cutscene/narrow corridor games. Not to mention crippling the industry with awful hardware design.
Now we see rumours of a bundled Kinect with PS4.
A games industry without Sony is the best case possible. Steambox or an Apple box would be a far better 3rd player.

Now you Sony loyalist know what it must have been like to be a Dreamcast owner. Better hardware, better games...didn't matter.
Posted 4 months ago # -
@OG
I was a proud Dreamcast owner and it broke my heart with Sega backed out of the market. That was a tough time, I still have the damn thing. :)
But wait a minute, are you telling us you were a Sega loyalist and you're waiting for Sony to fail or something because you believe Sony was the reason Sega left the console market? You're not one those people are you?

It's probably wise to keep it in perspective.
10% is more of a slap on the nose than anything. A company that seriously screws up would lose 25% or something truly brutal like that.
Sony is actually in the middle of a recovery from months of their stock tumbling, so losing 10% after a month where you've gained 50% isn't exactly critical to anything they're doing.
In general though, the industry is doing poorly. It's not like it's just Sony suffering. We'll see what the next gen brings, but I feel like it might be a very quick rush followed by a very serious hangover.
Ultimately it depends on how good the industry is going to be at keeping momentum going. I think a lot of those CEOs have no idea what they're actually producing anymore.

Not many conglomerates seem to be doing too well, Samsung being the only major exception that comes to mind.
@Gadzooks, do you have OCD? It's just that every time I see you post, it involves bitching about Sony's franchises being entirely milked, corridor QTE rip offs. I don't care about you criticizing Sony but at least be original, you're no better than Erthazus claiming that consoles have ruined his life with every post.
Posted 4 months ago # -
@CJ
True, but it's gets everybody gears grinding when it's focus just on Sony and plus we get to see how stupid some people really are like Erthazus. ;)
Woe knew exactly what he/she was doing when he/she created this thread. What's the point you ask? Who knows....call it hidden agendas or just pure hate for Sony. What it all boils down to is ignorance and stupidity.
Why anybody wants to see any one these manufacturers back out of the market is beyond me.

That's categorically false ChrisJack.
There's a huge difference between how the technology sector is doing in general, and how the games industry is doing:
http://investing.money.msn.com/investments/stock-charts/?symbol=%24compx
As you can see, most tech companies are booming. Most games companies are either failing to keep up, or slumping.

I wasn't being specific to any individual industry otherwise it wouldn't make it a conglomerate. For example MS & Apple are not really conglomerates.

Games are games in my book Mike W.
Was just pointing out how the shoe sometimes pinches when it is on the other foot.

- - A games industry without Sony is the best case possible
Word.

WOW! The stink is as bad as expected. Not that I expected ninty and xbox fans to say otherwise.
But people, CHILLAX! Sony is not going anywhere, and PS4 will be well supported. Case in point, this post conveniently forgets to mention that Sony stocks have gained more than 35% in the past few months, from the 30 year low of 960 something yen.And if stock prices really are that important, then apple lost 100billion $ of worth in the past few months for nothing.
But obviously, if pissing on Sony makes your day, then please continue on :)

Games industry without sony is rubbish and people saying otherwise are blinded by their fanboyish rose-colored glasses.

"A games industry without Sony is the best case possible"
Right. Sure. You'd rather have Apple in their place?? lol. Fuck me...
So let's keep all future consoles exactly the same on the inside. Because that'll really drive innovation.

"A games industry without either Sony or Microsoft is the best case possible."
Fixed that for you. We (as in the industry, not punters) only need one console platform in a Steambox-shaped future, kthnxbai.

Apple would provide quality, fast, well designed hardware, adequate SDK and great support.
So yes indeed.
Not that I expect someone like you, DH, to grasp the concept of good hardware (or software for that matter).
Posted 4 months ago # -
Apple already has the Apple TV & Mac Mini, I don't think they're going to make a gaming device ever again. Nor do I think they really give a shit about gaming altogether.
Posted 4 months ago # -
I would like to see a future looking like this:
1. Google or Apple - owning the casual and family space
2. Microsoft or Sony - owning the mid-core or price-sensitive gaming space
3. Valve/Steam - owning the hardcore or high-end space.I can easily see Valve/Steam squeezing MS and/or Sony out of the market before too long, though.

Since OG mentioned the Dreamcast, I have to post and say what an awesome machine that was. It's still the greatest and most memorable console launch for me yet. Local stores had Dreamcast Launch parties at Midnight, contests, and giveaways, it was amazing.
Competition is a great thing, and I want Sony to come back strong and make MS squirm a bit.
As Gheritt said above, Steam has pretty much become my gaming choice now thanks to prices and availability. I hope Valve makes MS squirm as well, MS has been cocky for awhile now, and they need to be reminded that no one is on top for long.

Sony really dropped the ball this gen - I went from being a PS gamer (didn't own the original xbox) to getting virtually all 3rd party titles on 360. It was sad watching my shiny (expensive) Foreman grill gather dust, but in nearly all cases the 3rd party stuff looked and played better on the MS machine. If Sony genuinely have the upper hand this time around (technologically), I'd happily return to my roots (esp with Destiny being multi-plat.) Sony is needed to keep M$ honest - I dread the day that they're no-longer competing in the market. Roll on the 20th...

Apple would provide overpriced, under equipped, iterative hardware, extremely closed infrastructure and yeah, ok, great support.
Whoop-de-fucking-doo. That would REALLY change the industry for the better. Because Apple have such a legacy when it comes to gaming IP and nurturing development.
Yeah let's throw Sony out and have every user interface with ads rammed down your throat. Or paying to play online across the board despite already paying your ISP fees.
Sony have done a lot wrong this gen but acting like the industry would be a better place without them just shows your complete ignorance.
And FYI 'Da Man', I've played more systems than your weekly disability allowance would ever afford you. I don't need a big retard-friendly interface to appreciate a platform. Keep hating though. You'll bring the evil Sony down one day.

Thank you yet again for demonstrating both your level of education in terms of hardware and software, as well as the general taste.
Mac OS is more open than anything made by Sony, and so is iOS.
Apple computers cost about as much as their analogs, you probably never owned anything better than an Acer notebook or a massive coffin PC.
For something 'underequipped' Apple hardware surely have the most features out of comparable products.
Lastly, I encourage you to educate yourself on each IOS sdk and feature 'iterataion'. Not that you would be able to decipher more than a few words out of it.
As for Sony, they did a lot of wrong last, this and tbh in the 90s gen. They make unnecessary, overpriced hardware with inferior tools and poor performance, which they milk for decades thanks to dense shizophrenics such as you.
Run along and engage in some screen swirling bishounen battles, you hardcore enthusiast. Not that you can play anything half competitive.

Mac OS is 'open'? Oh ok, that explains why the Mac get's all the top game releases like PC then.
Why not compare the tech specs of the latest Samsung smartphone to your beloved iPhone? Yup. Overpriced.
How would your fancy Apple 'iFeatures' be of any use on a GAMES CONSOLE? So you can see your buddies face while you're playing a fucking game? Outstanding.
"Apple computers cost about as much as their analogs" - I don't even know what this means. Is this English?
Where did I say Sony OS is open?
It's venomous haters like you that have all but stopped me commenting here. Any chance to have a dig and wind a few people up and you just jump straight in. Yet can't take it when someone insults your beloved Apple. I doubt you'll ever grow out of it because you seem pretty impressed by your actions! Way to go man.
And who the fuck calls themselves Da Man anyway??? That's a pretty huge 'cock alert' right there.Posted 4 months ago #
