sure lex, i get your point. i think it indeed has a lot to do with taste. i play the hell out of my 3ds for example. i love that thing. it probably even is my favourite games machine atm. honestly. but then...i just can't get enough of stuff like paper mario sticker star, shinobi, upcoming luigis mansion, animal crossing etc. combine that with castlevania, fire emblem and art academy and you have a great variety of fun stuff...it's all about taste. nothing wrong with you if it isn't your cup of tea but i don't think that there aren't enough original ideas/ games from nintendo in general.
So uh, how can next gen succeed?

I completely agree with you. If leaks are anything to go by, then MS is working to build a multimedia box whereas sony is focused on a pure gaming console. I also have absolutely zero interest in age old nostalgia cards played by ninty, although I cant blame them, they have a core group of people who will happily lap into any game they made, so it makes market sense to milk them continuously like they do.
I am more looking forward to the diverging paths sony and ms are taking forward. How successful windows and xbox merging will be remains to be seen, although its a good step, but not my taste. If Sony can price ps4 less than 400$ at launch, they could easily have a winner in their hands. I cant see where wiiu will stand among all this.

They can't afford to drop prices too much (look at Vita).
They won't be getting extra revenue from ad's and media like MS.
Their big franchises that cost millions don't sell half aswell as a simple to produce game like Pokemon.
Effectivly they are jumping on their sword with this business model.

MS can knock everyone with aggressive price cuts, but they wont, since they both their board and their investors are apple envy and would want to sell everything at a profit, for better or worse.
And actually, almost all of ninty franchises latest editions have performed poorly than their predecessors, so they aren't in a much good position. Too many eggs in a basket. They should try their hands in others markets (maybe toys etc.)to provide themselves a cushion. Gaming is not a biz now where you will always be in green unless you are fine with being bottom feeder.
Sony should target price first (like 250 with vita) and then adjust specs according to that.

Nintendo could pretty much survive on Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Mario & Zelda.
You can't really say the same for Uncharted, Killzone et all?
Nintendo shops already do shit loads of merchandise, look at all the Pokemon and Mario stuff you can buy let alone all the custom 3DS's etc...
What do you think's going to happen when Nintendo do a 'skylanders' with Pokemon? There's a reason the 'it prints money' gif was created.
Plus, the are pretty much selling on a profit already with Wii U and 3DS is going crazy in Japan with Animal Crossing, then Pokemon X & Y are going to knock it out of the ball park.
Uncharted & Killzone for example cost millions to make. Now compare that with the last 6 Pokemon games. There pretty much copy and paste, the budget to profit ratio must be huuuuuuge compared to a game like Killzone.
Now, from a gaming perspective, Pokemon isn't my cup of tea, but then Killzone is a pretty shitty FPS too...
You seem to like JRPG and such, tbh, I think you have the wrong console, a 3DS would suit you much better lol
