I would like to know what folks think about this free to play game? It looks great, sounds great...is it?
How is the microtransaction aspect of the game handled?
Is it pay to win?

I honestly don't think I've played more than once or twice since it came out, and that is definitely a mistake.
It's certainly not play to win, and if you're curious, I'd say you have to try it just to experience the scale.
The scale is really the reason why it could never be play to win. You don't get anywhere on your own, or even in a group of 5. Unless you're backed by anywhere between 20 or 100 or 300 guys you'll be waiting forever to capture a facility.
The pay aspect basically allows you to advance quicker, so it's like buying perks, weapons and attachments, which may be fun for you, but don't make a huge difference in the scope of things.
I don't know if you played the old one, but if you didn't, then it's something you're gonna want to see. It'll put any notion of "64 is the highest practical number of players" to shame.
There's a bit of a learning curve. You're always dependent on your fellow players, and vehicles are somewhat more challenging to operate. But when Planetside is at it's best, it feels like a full on assault on a real battlefield, not like any other shooter.

All human, no AI
Thanks DSB. I am going to give it a go this afternoon if my PC can run it. I need a new video card badly. The whole thing looked too good to be true, but sometimes great games do indeed happen. And I like the price :)
I can't add much more than DSB, I agree with his statements, mainly the ones regarding co-operation. Although it requires MUCH from your system and Notebooks can't handle it even with the required spec matched, so be careful about your machine.
I currently don't play it since I own a notebook, I've played it only once and still it felt great. While Blacklight and Tribes are much more like CoD where you have to level up constantly (but in these two you even require to P2W), this game approaches more like the way Halo or Battlefield 3 do, you can survive if you know the map, the basic controls plus having a good and focused team, and if you are already familiar with FPS titles you won't have any trouble with it. As DSB said, Vehicle controls are really unpleasant though but only in Air Vehicles you will have true difficulty, I would suggest sticking to the ground and, again, always having someone with you.
To summarize my opinion: Clearly great mechanics, easy to adjust and truly rewarding game, but if Lone Sniper is your tactic of choice, you might not live up too much longer.
If I had to put a finger on it, I'd say that in being F2P it takes away the commitment of the players.
The big battles are always easy to find, but they just don't really have the same investment as the original game. Planetside started life as a subscription based MMO, and what that meant was that people were super serious about what they were doing.
Creating guilds, making battleplans, coordinating, and generally reluctant to leave a fight until it was truly over.
This one doesn't have the same intelligence being put into it, and that's a shame.
I reckon F2P is the only way we'd ever see another Planetside though, and thankfully the gameplay is very recognizeable from the old one.
this should be a launch title for the next playstation
It's okay. It is full of bugs right now and needs a lot of patches.
I think after one year it's going to be a decent experience.
But i'm actually dissapointed by the game, I expected much more from it. Tribes:Ascend this year my favourite online shooter. You should try that.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
Tuff learning curve and sadly my PC needs a new video card. I need a low watts card something under 300watts powerwise, been having a tuff time tracking down what I want. I went to tigger and a couple other sites. Most cards are 300watts plus. I want/need lower because my PC is(and I don't want to also buy a bigger supply unit), and when I game my wife watches TV and son plays his PC in same room...and we have circut problems. I may be sol, any advice on a cheap, low power card? I would like to stay away from AMD(had nothing but driver troubles with them in the past). Thoughts?
@OlderGamer try getting a Corsair 500W powersupply, it is relatively cheap and most GCs require more than 400W...
AMD is better nowadays but I would consider getting 2 of them if your motherboard allows it. If not, consider getting a 600 series from GeForce, they are expensive but worthy, as they run 99.9% of the games at maximum with 60+ FPS. Depends more on your current specs though.
Good game. Scale is amazing. There are some optimization issues and defense issues, but January patch looks good.
Learning curve really isn't that bad. Should take no more than an hour or so to settle in. There are some tutorial videos on the web site. I was asked to join a random outfit with in 5 minutes of playing. I didn't join because I knew I wouldn't play that often, but it can help learn the game playing with others.
Get yourself a new power supply and new GC. You need to get a circuit breaker switch, some line, an outlet box and outlet. I moved my pc into the family room with tv, consoles, laptop and all that. Took me like 30 minutes to run a new circuit for the PC. Just dropped it down one stud over from the existing one.
Warning, you get into PC gaming and you may find yourself never playing that WiiU again. :)
