It's pretty damn good isn't it?
I reckon the barebones sidequests will prove to be mortally repetitive, but as far as first impressions go, it seems to have fixed a lot of the crap that was wrong with Far Cry 2.

Thought for a second you meant "boring" instead of "good". Installing now, and I reckon' I'll stay up to 3am if I don't become bored. Been playing FC2 for a week now since that was the closest to FC3 I could play, and I am looking forward to seeing just how much better it is.
Hopefully it's better than ass creed 3, my PC copy should arrive tomorrow
It has a lot of little easter eggs alluding to the original Far Cry.
I'm pretty impressed with the characters. I was expecting Ubisoft to go all French and over the top with the drama, but I think it's really quite tolerable, and those characters are rock solid.
It is very "meta" with all the minigames in the game itself. Go here, stab this guy, go here, snipe this guy, go here, kill these animals. That's gonna wear out quick, and hunting leaves you constantly interrupted by random patrols (think of the constant roadblocks in FC2, except mobile).
I kinda miss the Skyrim sort of feel where it was just you and nature.
It is pretty easy too. I don't mind, but I'm playing at the hardest setting, and it really takes a lot of stupid mistakes to get yourself killed. It's more of a murderfest than a challenge.
I wish to get it as christmas gift :P It's like a movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtuMFwRXNOQ .
Played only for a few hours and it's definitely good but they need to do something with that HUD,it's annoying, intrusive and constantly reminding you about your mission breaks the immersion for me cause I want to explore the damn Island without anyone telling me what to do all the time! Also is it me or you can not drop items from rucksak?
Honestly, I'm quite disappointed. Most of the character-scenes were already spoiled by the trailers, gameplay footage and making-of material. There's literally only one scene with Vaas i have not seen. Everything else about the story is quite unimpressive. The writing is good, but there are only a few scenes (Again spoiled by the trailer and gameplay footage) that made me go "Well, this is kind of fucked-up".
It doesn't sell 'the horror' as another game that came out this year that shall go unnamed.
I was hoping for more conversations between Jason and the characters, i didn't buy his character-development.
I don't understand why the boss fights end in drug-scenes even though Jason never took anything before those. It's weird and out of place, mostly resulting in QTE moments.
The islands itself are impressive. Not a fan of the setting per se, but Ubisoft makes the most of it. Love finding hidden treasures in the Chinese ruins. It's not as cool as the setting from Far Cry 2, but it's still nice.
The music is mostly completely out of place and one of biggest complaints i have. Try sneaking to Dubstep in a jungle setting. It's fucking stupid and really takes you out of the atmosphere. There is no way to mute it so that's a huge downer. I was hoping for music layers, but there are none, no matter what you do, WUP WUP.
The gameplay itself is good, but it does too little to differentiate itself from Far Cry 2. There is less driving and enemies take less bullets, but that's about it.
I'd say from a gameplay point of view it does everything better than Far Cry 2. Being realistic though, there was no reason why Ubisoft couldn't have simply patched Far Cry 2 to appeal more to the playerbase. 3 patches and the enemies still sucked up a whole magazine. Guess they are simply no CDPR.
Most of the things we see in this game should've been in Far Cry 2 to begin with.
I'm pretty sure you can drop items from the rucksack. I think that was part of the tutorial.
There are quite a lot of things about Jason that don't make sense. He's just as much a supersoldier as the guy from Crysis. He doesn't strike me as a gun nut, but he seems pretty firm when it comes to reloading a rifle, and stripping dead bodies seems to be second nature.
It does seem a little shallow outside of the story scenes. I wonder why that is. A game like that should really have some "smart" action, but instead it does kinda descend into Far Cry 2 randomness, even though every bit of it is still improved.
It's a bit like an MMO, isn't it? The animals don't really feel like animals, they feel like mobs, and then you kill a bunch of mobs, skin them, and make stuff. You're a leatherworker in WoW circa 2004.
I didn't spoil it for myself before the game came out though, so I'm excited about the acting and the characters. Those are worthy of something like CD Project Red, although the game was never supposed to be as smart as The Witcher.
I guess I wish you felt more human playing Jason, there's really very little danger around. Even on the highest setting you're basically a God running around killing a hundred guys with little effort. It's more domination than survival.
What i meant with my comment is that CDPR always seems to listen to the critzism and actually go back to their game and improve it. Ubisoft and most western developers never do that. As if they are so infallible. I mean it was pretty clear that the enemies in Far Cry 2 did take too much ammo to get killed, so one might wonder why never changed that.
@DSB OK,anyways not only did they spoil pretty much everything in the trailers also some idiot thought it would be nice to put a spoiler in the beginning of the game when you choose difficulty setting "Warrior".
I don't know what to buy - Assassin's Creed 3 or Far Cry 3? Which one would be better?
After the opening cut-scene I was wholely on the side of the pirates.
Im not sure if that was meant to happen or not but having to be forced to watch a bunch of dude-bros have an XTREME holiday was painful.
The I ran about and skinned some things, then picked some flowers then shot some guys then turned it off because the intrusive UI was doing my head in. I have'nt gone back, I don't feel like I'm missing all that much.
All of the side-quests just appear to be the same old shit thats in every fucking open-world game. Only this one is new and sadly has released after alot of other similar games this generation. I just can't face doing any of them. I have to though if I want to carry more than one weapon.
@a_my: I would recommend FC3 without a doubt. Two hours into Assassin's Creed III, and there's really not much keeping me going. Heard it takes seven to really get started which just turns me off completely. Batman: Arkham City took, what, half an hour to get started?
@DSB Aside from Vaas and Denis, name one impressive character. :D The tiger hunting my ass has a better character design than the Jason Brody. But I really like the game, it's great. Hopefully modders will put some effort into cool stuff soon.
@Gwyn, I think Dennis is the weakest of the lot, it just reminds me of Far Cry 2 which is definitely a bad thing.
Alec Earnhardt is outstanding in my opinion. He's crazy, creepy and endearing at the same time.
Yes, Dennis is boring and the more time you spend with him, the more you'll hate him. Especially at the end.
Well, to be frank I haven't had much run-ins with the Doctor past the part you bring him the mushroom, but, Jason, that tribal girl, Jason's friends they are all mediocre and nothing especial. Mainly spending time exploring, treasure hunting and gliding down the guarded places.
Hunting bigger animals with bow also sucks, which is my greatest problem. I can accept that a tiger probably wont go down with an arrow, but sometimes it takes more than 10 to kill one. Bow is da shit. Packing only Bow, Sniper, shotgun and a silenced pistol. Mainly using Bow and pistol and a shotgun for bears, leopards, komodos and tigers, and oh yes, SHARKS. Sniper for the times I get bored sneaking around shooting shit from far away is pretty damn awesome. :D
@Gwyn, in the future there will be a hunting mission where you need to kill 12 animals wirh RPG-7.
So much realism baby :D
I want to ask hardcore hunters where can i buy myself grenade launcher? I want to go hunting.
I'll admit that some of the hunting choices doesn't make much sense. The preferred choice is probably the sniper. Arrows would theoretically make too many holes and I'm guessing a shotgun would just destroy of good portion of the skin unless you only aimed at the head.
I think i'll choose Far Cry. I'm going to buy it today http://www.go2arena.com/far-cry.html :) Assasins is a little cheaper, but i think FC3 will be better. For now ;)
I'm pretty impressed with the characters. But I really like the game, it's great. Hopefully modders will put some effort into cool stuff soon. , but I think it's really quite tolerable, and those characters are rock solid.
Finished the game. Characters are awesome, everything else, not.
Even in the first Far Cry you could blow everything and there were physics. World Of far Cry 3 is made from adamantine.
First Far Cry is still the best in the series.
It would be perfect for a Jurassic Park Mod.
So...I have 8 skill points to invest but nowhere to use them cause I need to progress story missions to unlock skills...WTF!?
Just got to the bit with the land mines in the rice fields but feel like giving up...
How far away am I from the end?
@40, 45% of the game.
Poor Monkey, and you said that I was nuts saying that the game is mediocre.
P.S. Don't worry, Monkey there is another island to explore. Have fun with outposts.
@Erth
Not mediocre, just too long.
That's purely a personal problem for me though! :)
I only have time for games that are about 15 - 20 hours max, unless I'm crazy into it (last was Dragons Dogma)...
It's been a fine game, but after 20 hours, weaknesses are exposed.
This type of game could have happily been half the length IMO
@monkey, "This type of game could have happily been half the length IMO"
with this I agree. I don't understrand why they added second island and second island is not really very well made compared to the first one.
Beat the game with all the hunting, wanted, controlled all the outposts of the game. I think it was by far one of the best games I have played this year right next Borderlands 2, and The Line. I felt every part of the game was meant to be there and I enjoyed every part of it.
My only gripe is you can craft all the items within the first few hours of the game. I felt they should have added more to that. Now I just need to go get all the memory cards, relics and letters. Well worthy of the praise it got.
