Hey everyone,
I was just thinking of an idea. How about we, the vg247 community start a community award for best games of the year.
Remember, this may be our last chance to do it, after all world ends this year :)
Anyways, onto the idea-
1.Anyone wanting to add a game in the competition can just make a forum post with title containing the name of the game and year like-
Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise-2012 (It would be epic if this game wins!)
I added the year in the title to avoid any confusion if we continue this next year.
2.Anyone who wants to vote just has to post a comment in the respective game post, and say "YES" in the end. I added the yes part because it would make counting easier, and eliminate the need to read the entire post to make count.
3.For obvious reasons, everyone is allowed ONLY ONE POST. Failing to do so will result in your comment not being counted. I suggest making a forum post listing all the offenders so that while counting, there comments are ignored.
4.Counting will be done in January, by selected forum members who can be trusted (ideally selected by editors, if they like this idea). Multiple people will do the counting to minimize the chances of a calculating error.
5.Instead of one, I recommend selecting First,Second, Third and a honorary mention, based on the votes.
6.Honesty. I hope everyone who comments genuinely feels the game deserves the accolades. Otherwise this entire exercise will lose its purpose.

Well then, how is that? If enough people like this idea, I suggest we start right away.

If I'm able to vote I'd vote for Dishonored, with Far Cry 3, Black Ops 2, Borderlands 2 and Journey a close second.

Do you like the idea?
Of course you can vote, anyone can (provided that the idea gets support, which I am hoping it will). I would like the vg247 staff support for this, after all this site is run you fantastic people, not a lowly member like me :). If anyone suggests something better, I will support it.
I would to add a seventh point, as I suggested 4 positions, maybe each one can post 4 times, but like "FIRST YES" for 1st place, "SECOND YES" for 2nd place and so and these posts will only be counted for the respective positions. But it will make counting really difficult if many people participate. So I think we should stick to the original idea, if people are interested in it.

Entire threads seems unnecessary, and would clog up the forums really quickly. Games would get lost as they're cut off between pages, and plenty of potential candidates would be forgotten. People will be more likely to vote for something they see on the page.

If everyone is only allowed one vote, just make a single thread. Allow people to list off their first, second and third place votes, and give each vote a numerical value - 1 point for third, 2 points for second, and 3 points for first. Tally up the numbers at the end.

Seems like a much easier way to do it.

I thought of that earlier, but I will make counting a hell lot more difficult. I suggested separate forums so that counting could be done just be counting the no. of "YES". Counting will be the most difficult part, I suggest we tackle that first. The entire process will be rendered moot if counting could not be done properly.
We would also delete all forums regarding this afterwards so that clogging doesn't take place.

It really isn't that difficult to write up the names of the games on a document and add the numbers awarded for the votes next to them. I'll even take up scoring duty if it'll save the trouble.

I do think we should ensure people at least try to describe why they voted for the particular games they picked though.

Okay then. Lets go like you suggested. But 3 things-
1.Should it be point system, like 4 for 1st,3 for 2nd etc. or separate list for 1st, 2nd , 3rd positions.
2.Giving description shouldn't be mandatory, as it would only create a barrier for people to participate.
3.There should be atleast 2-3 counters, just to prevent errors.
I hope this is supported by editors, without official vg247 backing its useless.

This is a great idea. I like this a lot.

I'd like to think that we could make this as official as possible. I'd also prefer there to be more sway in votes for you readers than us editors.

@Dragon, 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd, 1 point for 3rd. Nice and simple.

I concede on the descriptions point. Not mandatory, but definitely encouraged. That way we could maybe pick some choice quotes for the winners.

So the format is decided then. We can put up a forum post for this where people can post (only once, multiple posting will lead to rejection) their nominees.I suggest either a separate list for offenders or better yet, deletion of their comments, something that mods like you can do.
They can give reasons, but optional.

Now if only Pat and other editors support this idea, it can work. VG247 has become big enough imo to host such awards.

Lastly, I think there should be 4 positions, adding an honorary mention. So it should be -
1st=4points
2nd=3
3rd=2
honorary mention=1

Dragon i like it, and i think Ireland point is great, and while we are at it, can we also do a choice awards for the commenters of this site too, i know i did started this topic before, and they mentioned this was done till 2010, then dropped because they did awarded for example the trollest comment of the year, but we can focussing on the possitive only, like best comment of the year, best funniest comment, best argument, best discussion, respectful commenter of the year, funniest commenter of the yeat, etc, what do you guys think?, and sorry for taking your post as hostage for my post ;), but i like your idea and michaels too.

I also thinks honorable mention is a bit redundant in the votings. Other than that, perfect.

3 places are fine with me then. I was hoping for some official vg247 backing, but I guess not. So when should we start then, now or maybe a few days afterwards. I would like to put a final draft today or tomorrow, collecting all the ideas agreed upon here.
Maybe a few trusted people can volunteer for the counting job before we get started. I wont be available in January, as I will be really busy that time.

Yep, exactly. I hope to start to new thread after posting a long draft here assimilating all ideas agreed upon here, then after keeping it like that for 1-2 days so that more people can look at the idea and maybe turn up some good suggestions. After that, opening a new thread to start the voting.

Here goes the draft-
1.A new forum post will be started (Heading to be decided, stay with me about this).
2.Users are requested to post 3 games, in order for 1st,2nd and 3rd positions. With 1st game getting 3 points, 2nd 2 points and 3rd 1point.
3.Winners will be decided based on final points tally, sometime in January 2013.
4.Multiple posts from a user will result in your posts getting tea bagged (pun intended).
I suggest a separate post where names of all users who are getting tea bagged are posted. Those users can post their replies there on why they did it, and if there reasons are good enough, allowing them to post again.
In short, ONLY ONE POST is allowed. Unless you are trying to troll.
5.Users can give reasons for their nominees, but its optional but recommended. It may help getting support of other voters for your nominees. I suggest the following format for posting-

"1. xxx
Reason-
2. yyy
Reason-
3. zzz
Reason-"
Its just a sample, users can post anyway they want. Only requirement is that it should be easily understandable to make counting easy.

Thats it. So how it?

About heading for the forum post to be used for voting, I hope someone can provide a good one. Since only 7-8 topics are visible on the site, there is a chance that the voting forum may become invisible, because of a multitude of reasons like spams, other interesting topics or even lack of interest for this thing. However the biggest hurdle of counting has been crossed, as Ireland Michael is ready to do the counting. Although I hope 2-3 more counters can be collected for this.
If all goes well, I hope to put up the voting article next sunday, if details get finalized here before then.

I think the disqualifation rule is a little unnecessary. Just state that only one post is allowed. I think the community is smart enough to understand and respect that. Keeping it light-hearted will be a good thing.

I'd suggeat a line saying that reasons for your votes aren't required, but still appreciated.

We can bump the thread if it disappears, but I can't see that happening. These sort of things have gone down pretty well in the past.

Otherwise, looks good.

And so on.

I personally like the first one. Has just the right amount of capital letters to catch the eye.

I honestly like it but of course the choice is up to you, mods and VG staff. Agree that the first one is good too.

A few suggestions from me if it's alright:
- GOTY247 Awards.
- VG247 Community Goes GOTY
- VG247 "It's Good" Awards.
I was also curious about VG247 staff's poll / post. Maybe Pat and the team are planning an official post for and there will be a place for something like "Readers Choice Awards" from your original post.

I would definitely like to add "community" to the heading as these will not be official vg247 awards, and I have no intention of doing that, that's up to Pat, Dave and other editors. Maybe I am worrying too much about heading.
I will try to finalize the format today, making it short and sassy for readers so that they don't have to go through multiple paragraphs to know how to participate. Do look forward to that and if anything can be improved, just say it!
