   I was thinking of getting a set-top box or something with the ability to stream Netflix for my mother for Christmas, and I was wondering what the best solution would be. From what I can tell, the Apple TV looks fairly easy to use and has netflix among other things so it looks like a pretty good choice at this point, but what are my other options here? I want to know what's working for you guys.

   Primarily it will be used for Netflix, and cheaper would be better but quality is most important. Thanks all.

   Loads of different manufacturers have different so called Smart set top boxes on the market this Christmas, Sony, Samsung to name a few, but they are retailing at £120 - 200 . When Apple TV is £99. The Apple TV works great in converting your current hd tv into a smart one. You can download and install apps with easy, and you definitely have quality control on apps because its apple, while these so called android smart boxes are very half baked. I'm no fan boy, I just see quality and for the money apple is the cheapest. if your mum ever gets an iPad or iOS device she can use that as a controller and also can stream content from that device via air play mode.

   are you planning/considering to get the next xbox? if you are patient enough, maybe just wait...there will be something like apple tv in that thing. there must be
   ;)

   EDIT: sorry only did read the headline first...if it´s for your mom and if it should be a christmas present for this year then my plan wont work. that said, never tried apple tv myself really. not watching tv much. sorry.

   That's funny, I also thought of getting the same gift for my mom, except she already has an iPad. The choice was pretty simple...then I went on Bestbuy.com and saw they had a Sony 3D Blu-Ray player for $100. THEN the choice was easy. This internet enabled device has all the same apps the PS3/Xbox have for streaming movies (Hulu, Netflix, Vudu etc) AND the ability to play Blu-Ray's which she had this aging samsung DVD player from a couple of years ago that could use some replacing/upgrading. It got pretty good reviews and I was sold on it.

   I'd say go for something that she'll definitely use all the time and look at the cost/benefit ratio.

   Thanks for the suggestions guys, Apple TV is looking solid (forgot to mention my ma already has an ipad which it seems would play nicely with one of these) although the Blu ray player sounds suitable too.

   It'll be a fun a christmas :)
