   This is a question i saw asked over on ign & thought it was good enough for you guys to chew over. Here's my thoughts...

   CoD: CoD is THE Daddy of shooters this gen. CoD 2 was there at the 360 launch & CoD 4 dominated both 360 & PS3 playlists.

   It is the benchmark franchise all over games are compared to, for good or ill & a game every gamer knows.

   Angry Birds: Its our generations Tetris. A game that like CoD everyone knows, that probably everyone has played. From a cheep (Arf!) App on mobile phones, to multimillion dollar franchise with a Star Wars tie-in.

   Arguably the single reason people think of ios as a gaming platform.

   Minecraft: A game that rewrote the rules. A seemingly simple sandbox playground that started as a pc beta & that recently knocked CoD off the top spot of the Live playlist.

   A breath-taking achievement, when you consider how much EA has spent trying to do the same.

   I look at the Minecraft beta & I see the inspiration for kickstarter.

   If i have to pick one it'd be CoD. It appeals to millions from all ages & all walks of life... Its the T-Rex that stomps around the console jungle... But we all know what happened to the dinosaurs...

   They ruled for thousands of years!! :b

   I may have to concede that this gen's defining game is indeed Angry Birds.

   I'd prefer if it were Minecraft, or any number of excellent console titles, but no, it probably is the game where you fling birds at stuff & try to knock it onto pigs that absolutely anyone can play, while waiting in line at Burger King. Fuck.

   Mass effect is my personal defining game of this Gen, the saga was a great experience and a step forward in storytelling although no where near perfect

   This generation was long and a lot happened so I don't think there can be just one defining game!

   Minecraft was a defining game for indie developers, brining indie games to the general public and changing the scene a lot I guess.

   Angry birds like you said is this generations Tetris, defining mobile games.

   CoD 4 defined FPS for this generation.

   I'm sure there's plenty more too!

   And that's a short list of games you quite like, none of them are generation defining. Angry Birds applicability would depend on the original question. Is the rise of mobile/tablet gaming actually the same generation as the 360/PS3/Wii? It's certainly the defining game of the current phone/tablet generation.

   Home console wise I'd say either Wii Sports or CoD4. Wii Sports because that title was integral to the phenomenal sales of the Wii and it's disruption of the PS3/360. CoD4 as that was the one which changed the series into the behemoth it is today. It also encompasses a lot of things which define gaming today in terms of online, party play, online progression. So many things have been picked up by other titles too.

   Personally I would say no. Mobile gaming should have its own ranking and not be classed in the same sets as home consoles. Do we think of the games on our Nokia 3210's as apart of the 5th or 6th Gen? I don't

   I agree with Wii sports! that is a good example of a defining game.

    Minecraft for the following reasons:

    It showed that indie / bedroom development is still relevant in an industry dominated by money-fuelled juggernauts.

    It showed the power of a staggered Alpha release and beta play. Many are doing it now.

    It showed that projects can be funded before completion, just like Kickstarter is doing now.

    It showed that creation elements in games are still relevant, again many more are doing it now.

    It showed that you don't need marketing spend that equates to the income of a small country to succeed. Word of mouth is still king.

    It showed that Swedish people look good in hats.

    Braid.

    However you feel about the game itself, I think its hard to forget how huge an impact it had.

    Until the release of Braid, the downloadable market was little more than the domain of tiny budgets, basic gameplay, and lazy rehashes of old games. Braid was one of the first truly break out titles, and it was a turning point where people suddenly realised that this part of the gaming sector was actually relevant and had the potential to create unique, original and commercially successful games.

    Now that market is flooded with dozens of amazing games every year. It brought indie gaming back into the spotlight in a huge way, and the industry has been immensely better off for that fact.

CoD4 revolutionized the first person shooter genre while Battlefield 3 delivered (in my opinion) the most immersive military shooter experience to date. CoD4 introduced something and BF3 took it even further, leaving a legacy to be inherited by the next generation consoles. Can't wait see BF4 come out next November on next gen!

    While I enjoy BF3 immensely, bfbc:2 was (for me) a more enjoyable game. That being said, cod 4 was this gen's definitive game for me. I still prefer cod to bf (slightly), but I play them both about equally.

    I'd take what Michael said about Braid and apply it to Darwinia. One of the first modern indie games to get serious mainstream exposure.

    Certainly got me hooked, and I haven't gone back since.

    Angry Birds is a good pick, but mostly by force of sheer exposure. It's not exactly a new concept. What's new is that a small mobile game can get that big.

    But that also kinda takes away from the "defining" part of the title, because if mobile and social have proven anything beyond that, it's that it's so volatile that you have millions of potential Angry Birds that fail and just drown in the sea of shovelware. It was Rovios 50-something'th release, and no one gave half a shit about anything before it. A big part of it is just dumb luck.

    I think it's harder to pick anything out of AAA. In that sense I guess CoD makes a good choice, because it's so easy to pick up and play, and have fun with, but that mass appeal ultimately comes in the form of a pretty shallow game, with a pretty huge investment by the publisher.

    It's definitely not alone in that.

    I have to go with Wii Sports. If Wii didn't have Wii Sports, the Wii doesn't reach the level of success it did. And that motivated Sony and MS to release Move and Kinect. Wii Sports drew in a wider audiance of gamers, some of them stayed with consoles and some of them moved on to PC and various Mobile games. I believe the Wii Sports game had the greatest impact on this generation.

    Now, my fav game this gen...that is a different post altogether.

    Minecraft, GTA4, CoD4 and Bioshock.

    All very obvious choices. The latter may be questionable, as it is more in the arena of a more serious gamer. The others are no-brainers.

    I would have to say WoW.
    I don't like the game at all, but i can respect the amount of players that actually do like it. And considering how popular it has been, all the way through this generation, it is just, well yeah.
    On the consoles it would have to be CoD i think. Pretty much the same reason as above.
    StarCraft 2 might also be here somewhere, considering the massive impact it has had on Esport.

    Last gen, I would have said Okami. This gen, I say Okami HD.

    Edit: On a serious note, you lot voted for Uncharted 2 as the greatest game of all time in our informal community poll last year (http://www.vg247.com/forum/topic.php?id=4418) so I'm surprised that game hasn't come up yet. Not that I'd call it genre-defining necessarily, or the greatest game ever.

    I'd have to agree with friendlydave and say no. I don't consider mobile games to be in the same category as consoles, & I gladly retract my submission of Angry Birds as this gen's defining game. Thank you for giving me a reason to do so.

    I was going to make the arguement that if it weren't for Angry Birds, mobile & touchscreen games in general wouldn't have taken off quite as they did, and we may not have a new console coming out in 5 days featuring a touchscreen controller, and Wii U may be considered the offspring of the events that have unfolded this gen... & it all went back to Angry Birds. But I don't want to do that. That's silly.

    @mathere92, I loved Uncharted 2 & I think it's a one of a kind classic, but it doesn't define this gen. For a start its a PS3 exclusive, so 360/PC/Ninty only owners only know it as "that Sony dude ripping off Lara"

    The philistine's -_-

    Whereas CoD is a giant straddling all platforms, from a humble DS, to a thousand dollar rig. Everyone knows it, knows of it & has had a game of it.
