That time where your site looks like fucking garbage... Not only do we get 2 ad bars that look trashy as fuck. BUT, now we get giant pop up movie ads in the middle of your articles.
TERRIFIC!

I turned on adblocker for this site, temporarily. The ads are getting quite ridiculous. I'll turn it off again at some point if they aren't as intrusive and extensive as they are now.
If the new ad break wasn't for CoD, I would probably be complaining right now...
But it is.
I've had to install adblocker on my PC just to get the site to load without killing my computer recently.
The ads right in the middle of articles is just complete overkill, and it's putting me off wanting to read news on the site altogether.
I fully understand the need to make money and put food on the table. But the ads and banners and everything are starting to affect the user experience for people visiting the site.

100% agree. There is a big difference between general ads, and what we are starting to see on VG247 now.
I used to come here because of the small non-intrusive ads. I could get my news, post with some cool people (Other than Erth. LOL) and continue on my day... I see pop up videos just for coming to the site in the near future.
I am starting to think the spam bots posting in the articles is your own faults.
Well i dont find it that bad, for me they only need to fix it, the ad should not scroll to open at the slightest scroll of the pointer over it, i think it should remain closed with a button option in order to press it to open said add, but not like it is right now, if they correct that i am fine with it, it is small enough, just put the option of doing a click on the ad to open it, therefore the people that would like to see the app will have the option, and the people that dont want to do it, they have it also, like i said is small enough so no complain on that, just improve it.
I think the new style for ads is a tad dissapointing and intrusive. The whole site can benefit from a redesin as well.
What are visitors that avoid mega sites(coming here instead) going to do when this site keeps getting bigger? This is a great site, but it is unrealistic to think it will be the same as it was a few years ago. And it is going to change even more going forward.
That isn't a bad thing in my book. Boo-hoo it has ads, that is because it is becoming more sucsesful. Not that big of a deal. You folks don't think the world is free do you? How does Pat or his staff cover events w/o making enough monies to actualy be there to cover said events?
It is just biz. Again not that big of a deal.
I'm surprised it took 6 or 7 hours for someone to post this! ;)
I certainly don't like the way the COD ad breaks up an article. One of the reasons I first started coming here was because of the nice, clean, uncluttered layout (yeah, I'm shallow). Obviously I stayed for the content.
I think it's bad timing that the NFS ads also seem quite garish compared to some of the previous ad-skins.
Like OG said though, it's part and parcel with the increased traffic. Kicking up a stink when you have no stake in the site seems a little diva-like.
It still loads on my phone. Takes a bit longer but still loads ok. If it start to run as bad as IGN though.... :/
The only thing that annoys me are those 8 things at the bottom of each entry, and of course Origin's cloud syncing which is completely unrelated but I have felt the need to empty my chest, although it still doesn't feel any better.
@ O.G. The ads are fine. I don't think anyone is bemoaning those.
What we are bemoaning is countless, overbearing Flash that lags the site and actually intrudes on the reading of the articles themselves. A large site should be able to mingle its ads well, not intrude on the experience.
Based on a post I read from Dave on the site, it seems like the in-article ads are some sort of error. They need to go. I personally won't be reading stuff if I have to scroll past giant banners, related links, *and* links from other websites just to get to the comment section. It's ridiculous.
I'm actively against ad-blockers, but I can barely even visit the site without the amount of Flash running on the pages. It completely kills my processor.
I never bothered with adblock and just dealt with ads until VG247 added that 'More from VG247' and 'More from the web' banners at the end of articles. However now it sounds like they're just getting worse.... seriously VG247 I love you but please take off the bullshit makeup. We liked you how you were without all the cake on your face.
EDIT: I just checked it out, that's horrible! Why would you do this VG247!
I don't understand what you folks are talking about? I have zero performance issues. And no lag. I am not calling anyone a lier, but I don't have the same problems that seem to be effecting you guys.
Are you visiting on Mobile or some sort of "other" browsers or something?
I use my desktop, have IEsomething or another, and do not have windows 8. I see adds, but they don't effect my visit, except those ones that like to open if your mouse gets anywhere near them(I dispise those, like the Halo 4 one). But mostly it is a painless surfing experience for me.
I can fully understand and sympethize with those that are having issues.
2012 and not using addblocker.... I seriously hope you guys don't do this
I have a low grade PC O.G. Like... single core old-grade. Unless I block the Flash, my entire browser freezes up for like 20 seconds any time I try to load a page. Ironically, it loads perfectly and instantly on my iPad for that very reason.
On the positive side, they've removed the "Related Posts" box, which makes the More From VG247 bit look a lot better. They also just launched a mobile version of the website, which I only noticed on my phone earlier this evening. It looks great and loads smooth, so I'm very happy about that. Kudos to whoever put it together.
@lul I can't stand people like you, to be honest. You get all of this news and content for free, and then block out people's main source of income. They work hard and bend over backwards to get this content, and you give absolutely nothing in return. You're a scrounger.
Ad blocker should be banned from browsers.
I'm on mobile OG. I usually don't even boot up my PC unless im downloading podcast. That's one of the biggest reasons I come to VG. Its super quick and concise. The ads aren't affecting my experience too much. Loading the pages is a little slower on top of the page itself jumping to fill in with ads. I've cursed out loud once or twice when I logged myself out when trying to access a comment box. I understand why the ads are there. Its fine with me until things become enough of a hassle to that it's not worth it to me to bother. Besides with the announcement of WP8 and how my WP7 is pretty much obsolete..im about one MS advert email away from chuckin this piece of shit at a wall :)
@Ireland Michael Wait... are you serious? I never ever ever ever click on adds and they annoy me specially the ones that pop up on certain sites and im pretty sure that 99% of all adds are fake anyways and all add blocker does is just hide them so please be a white knight somewhere else and think before you type.
Guys just a note, we didn't ask for those ads to be implemented and I raised the issue with Pat. We hate them and we're taking arrows to have them removed. Bear with us please :)
I hope so Dave. Their a serious distraction. Their HUGE! Like Godzilla huge!
Kinda funny after Pats whole Dorito's gate article too y'know?
"We're not in PR pockets... now here's a massive ad!"
That's what I figured Dave. Thanks for the update.
@Orbit. Yeah I know the timing was wank. But trust us, we hate them. They're going away ASAP.
Oh. But my torch? My pitchfork? I had to rummage through the entire shed to find it.
I mean ppl have to be paid? Server costs and other stuff too? But this is really annoying...ads okay, but an ad in the middle of a text sucks. And now the second ad line at the bottom...? "Around the web" Ads are really shitty.
@KrazyKraut This already said it was an accident and they're removing it.
I have to admit, that tc is right. The only thing I'm still visiting this site is the mobile version, that works really great at the moment.
Regarding those CoD ads. They're going to be here for the next couple of weeks. We won't be running the same format again.
I knew it... I wanted to believe Dave but the very fact that they weren't removed instantly shows he was talking bs and that the ads were staying :( I hope that bundle of pennies that Acti gave you was worth it VG247
ruh-roh!
Bummer. Not a deal-breaker for me though. Thanks for the heads-up Pat.
Sorry, men :(
