I got the beta as part of PS Plus this week, which got me extremely excited because this game had 'potential' written all over it. Even if it was just an exact clone of Smash Bros., I would be just fine with that because that was a legendary game, and I've been wanting a playstation version for quite some time now. So I eagerly jumped on, chose a character and joined a match...
Now this was my first match and I chose Kratos because, well, he's the fucking God of War ;) The match begins, and I assume the other people have already played before, but I just began mashing Square and this is where I noticed a problem; Kratos' chain swords have a huge range in comparison to the other characters basic attacks, and when you use the square button you basically always hit latch on to them and just beat the hell out of them. Whether you're in the air, on the ground, whatever, chain swords are extremely unbalanced. No one could get within range to hit me so I had an almost perfect score of 6 kills to around 1 each for the other players.
This brings me to my next issue with the game.
Rather than knocking the enemy off the ledge like in Smash Bros, you have to build up a meter by attacking and eventually let off a special attack to kill them. Again, this is totally unbalanced because some characters have specials with ridiculous range while others don't. If you mix that with a character like kratos who can basically avoid most specials by simply grappling the enemy, game over man. Of all parts to copy from Smash Bros, you would think this would be the most important, but I guess they figured if the objective was different, that would shut up all the Nintendo fanboys crying "copycat".
There are my gripes with the game, but aside from that, the controls are spot on and everything looks really nice. The camera can sometimes be iffy and I occasionally lose track of my character among the chaos but it's an interesting play.
I'm not sure if I'll be buying it now, because the balance seems to be way off for certain characters and that just ruins the game when you try to play as the others. Still, maybe I'm just an extreme n00b who needs more practice, but I hope this gives you an idea of what it's like for those who have yet to try it. For those that have, what are your thoughts?
