Am I the only one that hates these new bars? They look trashy IMO, I left Kotaku for a reason... But at least they have their bars under the user comments.
"More from VG247" and "More from the Web"

I think it would look better without the "Related Posts" box being there as well.
The "More from VG247" line makes it fairly redundant, and just stretches the height of the posts needlessly long.

I'm with you on this Se_7_eN.
I definately don't like it. It breaks the design and makes it look well to be frank, horrible.Posted 7 months ago # -
Looks like the first steps on a very slippery slope.
Thumbs down.

Well Ad-block takes care of the "More from the web" banner. If Related Posts could be tied into the "More from VG24/7" banner than it would be a nice clean system to link things togethor.

@AbsoluteZero - Related posts? All posts are game related technically... Not trying to sound like a jerk, just saying.
Glad to see I am not the only one hating these though :)

I agree, dislike it a lot. At least the related posts fit nicely.
It looks like this new vg247 posts/on the web is a new way they're trying to monetize VG247. I'd suggest expanding the website with new features etc but w/e XD

I agree. The extra 0.5 second's it takes to scroll past them is most inconvenient.

Adblock "outbrain.com^". Stuff's gone.

/salute
Right. Firstly, I know it isn't amazing, but nor is it terrible. I really don't mind it. And it's extra revenue. I don't think it's particularly intrusive (or I wouldn't have agreed to it). We did look at doing similar stuff a way back, but we couldn't find a company that didn't just provide links to "10 best ways to milk a boob," or whatever. So rest assured, we did think about it before we did it. We can drop any link we see in it we don't like, and the editorial it's linking to is "real". So I think it's fine.
As regards the "slippery slope" stuff: well, I'm sure you're going to see more ad formats on the site in future, but I'd never consciously let it get in the way of the "experience". This is the first time we've ever placed an automated ad solution in five years. I'd never allow in-text linking, for example. The bottom line is that we're doing a lot more traffic now, and we have to exploit it, but I'm determined to do it in a responsible way. Because I quite like it here as well.

Cool! Thanks for the reassurances, Pat.
I'm sure that, over the years, we've all seen how once high quality sites have basically turned into ad walls with a couple of paragraphs of actual content hidden somewhere at the bottom of the page.
It's good to hear that you're conscious of not going down that road.
Thumbs up.

I'd never do it, honestly. I hate sites covered in rubbish ads, too.
Posted 7 months ago # -
And this is why I love VG247: honest and instant feedback. Thanks for the post Pat. Good to hear you're seeing an increase in traffic.
EDIT: Having said that, and as others have pointed out already, the transition of scanning material from [More from VG] to [More from Web], can be utterly jarring for some articles.
As an example: http://imgur.com/PxGAc - Hate to say it, but that is the kind of trashy we're not accustomed to seeing at the tail of a VG247 post.Posted 7 months ago # -
Yeah, noted. I'll keep an eye on it. Cheers.
Posted 7 months ago # -
@mathare92, lol pretty much all those articles are bad and unrelated to what we'd all be looking for.
Good to get some feedback from you Pat so quickly :D
However I may start using adblock. I've always enjoyed VG247's ads but this new thing I don't need so I'll be blocking that.

Well i dont mind this at all, in fact i kind of like it, sorry guys for being the black sheep here ;_;
edit: add "sorry guys for being the black sheep here ;_;"Posted 7 months ago # -
I don't like it, but I don't hate it either. No big deal really. This site is a biz and monies need a making. No worries. A couple of adds won't drive me away, obnoxious trolls, however....
Posted 7 months ago # -
Pat, I'd like to make the suggestion of removing "related posts" since "more from VG247" is essentially the same thing. That's the most jarring thing about the new bar, in my opinion.
Posted 7 months ago # -
I would assume that if they removed the 'related posts/more from the web', that they would then lose any revenue gained from it.. or do you just mean the header itself?
Posted 7 months ago # -
^I think he wants them to remove this:
<div class="boxout bottom single"> <h3>Related posts</h3> <p><a href="http://www.vg247.com/2012/10/14/wii-u-nintendo-rolling-out-unity-to-all-1st-3rd-party-studios-unity-ceo-discusses-deal/" rel="bookmark">Wii U: ‘Nintendo rolling out Unity to all 1st & 3rd party studios’</a></p> <p><a href="http://www.vg247.com/2012/09/20/wii-u-and-unity-join-forces-to-encourage-developers/" rel="bookmark">Wii U and Unity join forces to encourage developers</a></p> <p><a href="http://www.vg247.com/2012/09/24/unity-no-current-plans-to-support-3ds/" rel="bookmark">Unity: No current plans to support 3DS</a></p> </div>Posted 7 months ago # -
@Deacon I'm saying "Related Posts" is redundant because of the "More from VG247" box, so it seems silly to keep them both.
I imagine it's the "More from the Web" box that is the money making. People play to display their articles, and Pat makes a few pennies for each click on them, like most ad services.

If you guys ban those odious haters of the games I like, I'll cease using AdBlock.
Also, if you start banning anyone who flames Apple, I'll reinstall Flash.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Apologies Michael - I misunderstood what you were saying there!
Does seem unnecessary to have both.
Posted 7 months ago # -
Not keen on it at all but it's hardly a deal breaker and if it helps the site get more revenue then so be it. :)
Posted 7 months ago # -
Pat, would you mind cleaning up in the "MORE FROM THE WEB" section :P
There are definitely some pictures there that doesn't belong here x)Posted 7 months ago #
