Looks like Zombie U and other games may be running in full 1080p on Wii U:

So, I guess that proves the console is more powerful than 360 & PS3 for those that were worried! :)

That puts a massive new complexion on the machine and viability of third party software on it. If it's offering the best version of these sort of titles - by some way - then it'll be my platform of choice for third party single player games.
Wonder why the Nintendo titles are still 720p though?
That's what I thought...
All my friends are on 360, plus I have my gamerscore there (not that I'm a cheevo whore), so I purchase most of my games on 360...
However, if games like assassins creed 3 etc. run in 1080p on Wii U, I'll probably switch my platform of choice! :)
Yeah, it's strange Nintendo games run in 720p? Perhaps they are locked into 60fps?
wow that´s interesting news indeed. same here: my main plat this gen for sure was/is the 360. i like that thing a lot (not ms and their business model, but the 360 was/is a great console with lots of things to like about it)...but if we´ll see 1080p multiplat happening on wiiu i will probably switch to it as well - and let my 360 be the halobox. i really can see this coming.
@monkey Well, if Wii games were running at 480p, then 720 would be the logical next step.
Considering the cartoonish art design of Mario et al, do we really need better than 720p to start? Cartoon-esque worlds look pretty awesome at 720p, to jump right into 1080p would be like going from VHS to Blu-ray. There's nothing wrong with DVD for that visual style.
I think you're right about them wanting to maintain the higher framerates. We'll get there eventually. At this point, (I haven't yet played Twilight Princess) 1080p Zelda might blow my brains out.
There's a catch:
Zombie U is not a sharp looking game. PS3 had some native 1080p games during its first year. Stuff like their NBA which looked a bit weaker than usual 720p sports titles.
The Assassin's Creed 3 part is NOT confirmed and I'm absolutely sure that it won't run on NATIVE 1080p. It may get some sort of up-scaled 1080 or something but a game with such visuals won't run on native 1080p on Wii U, 360 or PS3.
@The_Red
What do you mean by not a sharp looking game? PS3 stuff running at 1080p looks very sharp, bland and basic maybe but sharp.
Also lack of 1080p on PS3/360 is partly related to lack of memory on those machines too - so with extra memory the Wii-U should at least be able to make a better job of it (pixel throughput being the next stumbling block).
I'm not sure how authentic the information from the article in that link is.
It's just an empty claim without a source.
I'd probably wait until Ubisoft actually confirms this themselves, before getting carried away...
@2
I was talking about average looking games like Zombie U and some PS3 launch titles (Resistance 1 was 1080p if I'm not mistaking). Also, this is about native 1080p. All PS3 and 360 games can be played on 1080p but they always have a much lower res. COD games for example aren't even 720p.
The better resolution required for native 1080p isn't just based on memory from what I understand. Of course I could be wrong but so far, only ZU has been kinda confirmed for native 1080p and it looks like a 360 launch title or late Xbox 1 game.
@The_Red
Ok see what you mean. The article is implying native 1080p - hence my initial comment. Agree it could well be just upscaled - need to wait and see and as G1GA points out a proper decent source would be good.
Disagree completely ZombieU looks like a 360 launch title or XBox 1 - that's well off the mark.
@G1GA
Spoil sport!!! :)
I hope it's 1080p not upscaled 1080p...
There's no point in really showing off about upscaled 1080p as the 360 and PS3 already do that!
@DrDamn
I'm not saying the gameplay looks bad. I'm actually really interested in it but the game looks really date from a technical standpoint. Feels like Left 4 Dead on low graphics setting to me.
Did you know god of war ran at 1080p and its a 2010 game ?
Bottomline is wiiu has better cpu but worse cpu than current gen .This has implications. For eg Ps3 and 360 versions would possibly have better AI and more enemies on screen than wiiu one Also gpu is shared between 2 screen so that advantage is also nullified to an extent.
@Dragon
What do you mean, God of War ran in 1080p?
On PS2? Or PS3 remaster?
Please clarify.
@Monkey
Sorry, I missed 3. GOW3. But it should have been clear, I guess. Only gow game that came in 2010 was gow 3.
Also I missed something, gpu will provide some sort of graphical advantage to wiiu versions, but it will not be discernible for most gamers. They should have gone with a better cpu.
@Dragon246
Actually, God of War 3 was 720p native, not 1080p. The 1080p mode in that game was upscaled. It requires a much stronger GPU and CPU to produce those kinds of visuals in native 1080p.
That's why games like COD and Alan Wake don't even run in 720p native. They are around 600 to 680p native.
@Red
Yup, sorry for the confusion. Its in 720p native.Never noticed it :)
Replace that with Wipeout HD. Definitely native 1080p.
@Dragon
Yeah, i didn't think GOW 3 was 1080p, i have it on my PS3 and i thought it was locked at 720p and 30fps.
Wipeout is indeed 1080p (and 60fps i think, although it drops in 3D). However racing games, especially one that looks like Wipeout are much less hardware intensive.
It's not like you can go off the track and drive around. Most games that are 1080p on PS3 are racing games or indie type games, i think Ridge Racer 6 is another example...
I remember Sony fans making a huge deal regarding this in the Eurogamer forums as if every game from there on out would run in 1080p. Then MS followed suit after the HDMI port was added. All that transpired was loads of games locked into 720p or sub-720p being upscaled which defeated the point really.
Especially when most games have a shit load of screen tear when you try and upscale to 1080p, Dragons Dogma for example.
I can't think of any shooters that are locked into 1080p on 360 or PS3, only ones that have been upscaled.
It's not 100% that Zombie U runs in full 1080p HD yet, but if the article is true, thats pretty impressive for a launch title considering everyone's been slagging off the power of the console.
Maybe more third party games will follow suit.
If not, it's business as usual.
*Added*
After a bit more research, it looks like people have suggested quite a few 3rd party titles may be running in full 1080p.
Batman, Assassins Creed 3 and Black Ops 2.
This however, could be bull shit! (or most propably upscaling!) :)
Wipeout dynamically switches down the resolution (and upscales back) depending on load. Quite an impressive technical feat in itself, but it is not consistently 1080p @ 60fps anyway.
Toki Tori 2 is confirmed as proper full 1080p on WiiU. Digital title and 2d mind.
@DrDamn
Doesn't every game does that? Dynamic framebuffers are now a commonplace in the industry, resulting in frame rate drops to maintain quality image. No game runs 1080p on consoles always at 60fps.
@Dragon246
Nah you are thinking of vsync, maybe double buffering. I am taking about Wipeout dropping the resolution it renders at as you are playing. I.e. some of the time in a race it is 1920x1080 and at other times - due to load or complexity it drops as low as 1280×1080 - which it upscales to 1920x1080 for output.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/wipeout-hds-1080p-sleight-of-hand
This is done to maintain framerate at the cost of image quality.
@DrDamn
That is one way of doing but newer engines have found a better and more efficient way to maintaining 60 frames for example in BOrderlines two if you set it up to smoothed frames it will mess with the settings like draw distance, particle effects, etc in order to maintain a consistent framerate without any frame drops.
I don't see WipeOut HD way of doing becoming the norm especially since you can easily tell when it is doing it.
@PB
No I don't either. It works in WO because its a fast game. The method of scaling is also very PS3 specific. It can scale in that direction very cheaply.
The thick plottens ...

we will see if this amazing wii-u can hang on to their so called 1080p, when the new games arrive for the ps4/x720.
Experts also recommend that you replace your impact Nike shoes, whether they have any significant wear or not. This is because of its benefits to the feet in the shoes use a certain period of time after disappeared, even though you see the appearance of the shoes is also very good condition. Therefore, do not wait until the injury to the foot until know. Even if you are a Top-Saler buy wholesale Nike shocks shoes, so good shoes after you wear it walking more than 500 miles also need replacing. In order to be able to know the shoes exactly walking many miles a built new shoes for the speedometer and odometer will be born. This innovation is bound to cause a surge of waves.

@PS3TROLLBOY
Are you going for the Darwin award this year?
@DrDamn
That's the thing. New Super Mario Bros 2 is a mainly 2D game and graphically light title (resource / power wise).
Of course it's a start but I'm still pretty sure that none of the graphically challenging titles will run in native 1080p. At least not yet (Maybe in 4-5 years / near the end of Wii U's life).
Well, Dr. as it seems they have edited the original post at the product's page.
"Experience Mario like never before... in high definition, only on the Wii U console!"
They've backtracked. This almost confirms it that Wii U will be just like PS3 / 360 and will run 99 percent of games in 720p (The upscaling for 1080p doesn't count).
