I was just curious how long people wait before they buy a new game system, and why.
I just got a PS3 & PSP last year, & I'm getting a Wii this week, so, I wait quite a while. Just makes more sense to me to wait for the console & game prices to come down, and then take my pick of the best of the bunch.
How about you? Anyone still waiting to get a next-gen system?
I bought a 360 in 2007 months before Mass Effect and then got a PS3 like a 2 years later. I don't have any plans to buy a new system I do however plan to get a new GPU in the next month or so.
I have tended to buy on or about release. I like my games and my new toys. I think I'll end up with enough released over a console's lifetime to justify the cost, if I don't then it's no-ones fault but mine. I think I've owned all of the current gen at some point, ended up selling or trading the Wii and 3DS as I wasn't buying the games and didn't see anything on the horizon to justify continued ownership. Just purely down to personal preference. I'm seriously considering a WiiU still and will likely get at launch.
The next generation of 360 and PS3 will be a tricky one. Likely to release in a similar time frame. So shelling out for both would be tough to justify. Will depend on backwards compatibility and other things. This gen I've played more on 360 - particularly at the start and middle, but that's switched to PS3 as the generation closes. More interesting titles there for me and PS+ is ridiculous value.
I too got the Xbox360 for Mass Effect. Was a major bummer when I realised it came out for the PC a few months later.
Microsoft, Nintendo (only until GameCube) and Sega Consoles always day one. Never bought a new Sony console :F
/e: New Xbox of course day one, but only if the specs are good and it's not too much on kinect 2.0. Otherwise I'll buy a new PC :D
For consoles i always pick them right away,for currency issues in my country if i dont buy right away i will regret it later, because eventually it will cost more, i did bought the 600$ ps3 so took that as an example, but with handhelds i wait a little bit, right now i will pick vita as soon as i received my end year bonus, that and gravity rush.
New Xbox will probably be day one for me and then a PS4 eventually. It really depends on the price, launch titles and launch dates though so I might change my mind.
I have considered not getting any of the next gen at all and just sticking with the PC.

That is my goal as well I will be buying a 600 series GPU and putting a bigger hard drive into my current PC and the PC will be the platform I play until I decide which next gen I will get 1-2 years later when there will be many games to choose from to allow me to gauge what console would be best for me.
Day one for me, in the past. Going forward? I don't know. Now that I am mostly a PC gamer the notion of needing new hardware to play new games is a different thing. The generational lines blur.
And that muddies the waters going forward.
I don't know. I would like a WiiU, so I will get one of those. But I don't if I will be getting one at launch or if I will wait a bit. I will be looking at what Sony and MS do, but I am not sure I am ready to buy one of those either.
It all comes down to price point for me. And the actual games. I will not be buying new expensive hardware only to end up having the same game experiences that I have pretty much walked away from at this point. It either has to be cheap, impulse level or it has be so compeling and exclusive that I can't get it on PC. Time will tell.
I wait til I have enough spare money. Being a student- I won't be getting a new console anywhere near its launch period.
@PB, For me it's just the issue of having time for it. At the moment I very rarely find the time to play everything I own/want over three systems. Going forward I'm just not sure I want to pay into a whole new system or two and find that they gather dust.
My PC currently offers the best in terms of value as games are cheaper and will only get cheaper through sales etc. We'll see what happens as I'm not going to write anything off at this stage.
i will buy any system that has 20 absolutely must-play EXCLUSIVES for the system. If there's a franchise I particularly like that I know is exclusive to that system and likely to come out, I may count that in the 20, but that's my line for buying a new system. So far, the only system I have this gen is a PS3, because there aren't 20 exclusives I want on the 360 and Wii.
The rule will apply to the PS4/Next Box, as well, whenever they come out.
I forgot to add: if PS4 has backwards compatibility, I'll get it asap. Currently only have an Xbox360, so it will be a double win.
I have bought a new console at launch since 1999 with the Dreamcast.
I have enjoyed PC gaming more lately with the Digital sales on Steam and other services, I'm bored of the xbox 360 at this point though I still have games on it i want to play. I prefer playing using my PC and my 360 controller, games look, load and play better.
I love my 360, but it's just feeling pretty old these days compared to what my 2 year old GPU is capable of.
For me to want one at launch, the new console would need to a significant jump from the 360 and amazing games, otherwise I may wait on it a bit.
i bought a 360 at launch a ps3 after the first pricecut. then sold it and bought it again. i love nintendo games but was sceptical about the wii...bought a wii very late a year ago or so, because i wasn´t convinced by that motion stuff...and found out that i was insane. great games on that thing. bought a 3ds after the price drop, the 3dsxl at launch. the vita a month after launch and sold it a month later;)...i will pick up the wii u day one for sure. there is no rule when to buy stuff for me. it depends on price, on how much i crave a new system and if the games for it really matter for me...
for the next gen i am not so sure. i will look very very cloesely at what ms and sony are up too. i am not sure yet if i will own almost every sytem like i have this gen. right now i can see myself living a great gaming life with the wiiu, 3ds and maybe just maybe a gaming pc. i hate where ms is going to atm and while i give sony lots of credits for trying to bring new and fresh stuff, what they bring to the table just doesn´t fit my taste so often anymore...that´s just me though
For a console it has to have 10 exclusives I want to play. For a portable it has to have 5 that I want to play. To elude the exclusive rule it has to have certain features I want. I waited 2 years into 360/ps3 life before I bought a ps3 and that was because a friend of mine who worked at a gameshop got it for me for 220 bucks.
I'm still waiting for enough Wii exclusives might pass Wii up completely and just get Wii U. I won't have to sacrifice my vita letting him use it if I get the Wii U. Would be a good intro to technology for him.
I am going to pick a cheap 360 up in the next couple of months and then the ultimate pc rig assignment begins.
@fearmonkey, I go through phases with my 360 but I'm mostly like you. PC prices are too good to ignore and now more games are pad compatible as default it's hard not to pick PC. It's why pre-ordered most of the big games for it other than Transformers, which is a 360 purchase because I'm going to coop with a mate.
Early adopter here. On most tech gadgets btw. Do I regret having bought something before the inevitable price cut or version 2.0? No. Love to be first.
For consoles and handhelds: a year and a bit.
By then there should be:
Less OMGNEXTGEN!! hysteria
Lower cost of entry
More content
Fewer hardware issues
And possibly even a hardware revision.
Another barometer for me is a ratio of games to hardware value. So if the console costs 200 bucks, there should be 200 bucks worth of games I want for it. (I don't rent games or buy second hand. Always new, but often well after release date).
For PCs:
I build my own with a mind that each new build will last me 5 years.
Dreamcast, ps2, and ps3 were day ones for me. Ps4 will be the same. I'm gonna pass on MS this time around. After this Gen there isn't any exclusive that would change my mind. Not to mention two of my closest friends are jumping ship. One of them just for PS+. Says he's a little aggravated about the money he's been giving ms for the last 7 years and they've never given him a single thing. Plus isn't for me but you can't argue with him.
I went from gamecube to xbox360 when fable 2 came out, then I got a Wii the following year and then (many years later) I got a PS3 a couple of months ago.
This wasn't by choice though, University happened, now job ect.. I would of got them as soon as they came out If I could off.
I like new toys. Bought 360 at launch, Wii a few months after launch. I'll be picking up NextBox and WiiU at launch for sure.
Owned a PS3 slim for nearly a year but only played it for a couple months. Such a massive dissapointment, it put me off Sony for life. Not just the tedious shallow games (apart from Demons Souls) but the horrible clunky operating system and network. Total joke of a system IMO.
I'm tempted to get Ouya when it launches too.
The PS2 was the 1st and only console I got "at launch".
I got an N64 when it got cheap (I think I got it for about £90).
Around about the time the current crop of consoles came out I built myself a gaming PC.
At some point in either 2008 or 2009 me and the gf halved in for a Wii - a bit of an impulse buy on a rainy day.
I bought an Xbox360 in late 2009 mostly to play with my buds who were mostly on xbox.
At some point in 2010 or 2011 I upgraded my PC's GPU and swung back to being mostly a PC gamer. Since the xbox has fuck-all exclusives it started to become a bit redundant so I traded it in late last year and got a brand new PS3.
When the next crop of consoles come out I'm reasonably certain I'll just upgrade my PC again. If any of the consoles emerge as worth having I might get one, but tbh, unless there's a pretty massive overhaul with the way business is done on the consoles I think I'm done with that scene for a while.
I'd rather have a Nexus 7 than an Xbox 3 or a PS4 right now.
I wait a while. I didn't get a PS3 until last summer and then stormed through a shit load of games I've been wanting to play. For the first 3-4 years it was available in my country I didn't really need it. Then the really good games started coming out: Uncharted 2, God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII. So I don't know if I'll be repeating my wait.
I'm A LOT more gamer interested now. I would never pre-order anything or buy something day 1 until around 2011. I think Crysis 2 might have been the first game for me to play on its release date. I'm also following cons like E3, gamescom and Comic-Con. Following shows like GT's GTTV, Invisible Walls and Bonus Round.
For Vita I am waiting until I start making money and for better games. I've seen a few that looks good: Uncharted, Gravity Rush and that's basically it. I want better ones. I don't regret buying the PSP. I got to enjoy Crisis Core, the God of War PSP games and Final Fantasy VII-IX on the go. But I think I would like a lot more games on the Vita before I shell out for that system. More than 10+ games I would play and that is looking like a long wait for those to come out. Sure, Bioshock, Killzone, Call of Duty, Souls Sacrifice and Assassin's Creed are coming, but I need more.
