my red 3ds xl arrived. i am not really feeling it though. imho the screens do not look as crisp as on the original 3ds. i knew that would be the case because it has the same res, but the lack in crispness makes certain games just not look that good (pilotwings for example, mario kart too i think...well most games actually). the ds games look awesome on it though. the big screens are cool but the build quality really isn´t that great. it feels cheap and the metallic color finish is just plain ugly...compared to my old white 3ds the xl really looks plastic- cheap.
also mine is faulty. the bottom screen flickers. not always but sometimes and when it does, man that really IS annoying. i will have to send it back unfortunateley...has anyone else experienced the same problem, or could you please check yours in the next days or so? it´s not always flickering - it is "best" to see in the lowest brightness setting. but it happens in the highest brightness too. it makes me mad. now i wonder if that might be a general problem, because the bottom screen is much darker than on the original 3ds now by default, so i guess that is one of the reasons for a better battery life, so maybe all the xl´s have this problem? i really love the 3ds but i am thinking about returning it and getting the slick white one again...any other impressions yet?
3dsXL arrived-underwhelming...

Dude, you seriously had a mega boner for this console...
I can't afford one unfortunatly this month, maybe next. Thing is, I tried one out today, mario kart, mario 3d land etc...
All looked amazing. I think your over analysing shit, or looking into probs that you need not bother.
Have fun with it, give it a few weeks and you'll love it! The screen was sooooo big when I played mario land it was awesome!
Quit bitching' start enjoying'! ;)
If you have coped a bad unit though, unlucky! ;)

hehe, yea i was pretty excited. but i really do think the trade in between screen size and crispness is worth mentioning. i am not a graphic whore, not at all, but the crispness of the original 3ds made those games so polished and sexy looking imo, so i am not so sure if i prefer the bigger screens or the crispness tbh. it is definiteley visible and not just nitpicking.
i definiteley have a bad unit though ;(
the bottom screen is broken and it flickers like crazy, even getting worse now. will have to return it next week and this really makes me think about replacing it with just another "old", small and crisp 3ds instead of the xl.Posted 10 months ago # -
I think poly needs a next gen real bad :-( Stop wasting money on these handhelds guy, their not scratching your itch :-)

lol...maybe
3ds is a must tho

ok, i think i´ll give it a try. it feels much better in the hands but this one has to go, it´s broken. that´s probably a big reason for me complaining, like monkey said: i couldn´t wait and now i received a faulty unit, that didn´t help much to fall in love with it. will probably just get another XL as a replacement...the display is more blurry tho, definiteley visible.

Only had a little go in a shop. 3D is definitely improved, easier on the eye and bigger sweet spots. Still easy to lose the spot though, which I always found hampers its application in a hand held. The original 3DS was the very definition of cheap and plasticy in looks. I thought the XL was certainly an improvement, but no where near the standards of the DSi or Vita.

i really think the original 3ds looks less cheap, at least the white one looks good imo. that one isn´t as glossy and doesn´t have these "cake" layers. the white one really is pretty sweet. the xl isn´t really that bad but the metallic finish isn´t my taste and it looks more toyish to me. that´s ok i guess because it is a toy - just like the vita...the dsi /dsi xl is still my favourite handheld design this far though.
i will get used to the bigger, not as crisp screens i guess. this redesign isn´t completeley appealing to me though. i don´t need a second cp but had hoped for a better overal quality and a crisper screen...anway the 3ds console concept is great and i truly enjoy the awesome 3ds games libary.Posted 10 months ago # -

I absolutely *love* my XL! I didn't encounter any kind of flickering regardless at which setting. The additional screensize let Resident Evil looks absolutely stunning. Cave Story is on my second playthrough now. Everything is better, imo. Maybe the plastic metallic look isn't so slick but I don't care. In terms of build quality the Vita trumps the XL but I don't care.
The XL is the way to go for my taste. The 3D works much better on the bigger screen.

thx manamana for sharing that info! i am very glad to hear that you didn´t experience that flickering screen.it is a tricky bitch because it´s not always happening on my device but when it appears it totally breaks your gaming experience...i am pretty sure now that it must be my device being faulty. will ask for a replacement and send it back tomorrow. after playing for a while this weekend i am sure now that i´ll stay with the xl despite it´s flaws. it feels much better in your hands on longer play sessions for sure and yeah - it is more pleasing to the eyes (though less crisp;)). i must say it again: the 3ds games library is so awesome. i had tons of fun with those games yet again. even my non gaming girlfriend played a lot of theatrhythm ff, layton, rhythm thief, super princess peach and nintendogs (male chiuaha named luigi...jesus help me) -and had lots of fun too.

Well, I've just ordered mine (along with Ridge Racer 3D, Dead or Alive: Dimensions and Heroes of Ruin) from Zavvi. Can't bloody wait!!

ok, i got another unit now. will get a refund from amazon and just went to a shop to buy another one. the bottom screen of my first one was totally broken. i can now say that for sure. it was even darker than on the one i got now and it had this strange flickering now and then like i mentioned. i am now having quite a loose hinge though ;( the hinge was much more solid and stable on the first unit. it´s kind of wobbling now. haha, jeeez.... but i can live with that. to me the hardware looks kind of rushed. i wouldn´t be too surprised to see a redesign yet again in a year and a half or so ;)
but after playing that thing for quite some time the last 4 days i must say i am starting to prefer it over the original 3ds. monkey, credits, you were correct. the screen- and unitsize is much more pleasing to the eyes AND hands. mario kart in first person view is now truly freaking awesome! man, i really do love those 3ds games and there is so much third party support for it as well. it´s all about the games anyway and they are definitley more enjoyable on the big screens. i see golden times for 3ds games coming, i think some of the best games are yet to come. it´s a great handheld - the original 3ds has it´s it advantages too though. uprgrade is not a must imho. you are trading stuff for other stuff.@GW: i know your opinion but you need super mario 3d land and mk 7 too! by the way. i tested my copy of nsmb ds...it is looking good on the xl...also highly recommended; yoshis island ds. great platformer and looking sweet on the 3ds xl!...and those zelda games: phantom hourglass/ spirit tracks...actually all games i tested looked good on the xl. the trick of pressing select while launching a ds game to get the original screen size/res worked fine and picture size was good and res was 1 to 1 - i still prefer the xl look...vivid coulours, very enjoyable.

I'm deffo gonna get NSMB1 for sure Poly, but I'll wait until I 100% that and Ridge Racer before dropping more cash on SM3DL and MK7.
