I started out with death metal originally. My very first metal song was Twilight by Edge of Sanity. I'll never forget it.
I just randomly downloaded it off the recommended list on Napster (it was that long ago!) and I thought the intro was extremely gay, but I had never heard anything like it once the riff came in.
I pretty much instantly knew that I was gonna do everything I could to listen to as much of that stuff as humanly possible. Today I got a record collection of 1126 cds, tapes and vinyls.
First I was really into death metal. Dismember, Grotesque and Edge of Sanity have really stayed with me since then. I also think Grave's "You'll Never See" is the best death metal album of all time.
Eventually I got into black metal, so I also have a very serious collection of that. Especially the Swedish stuff like Sorhin, Craft and Nifelheim.
Mostly recently I got into the core traditional scene. Last year I took my wife to Keep it True in Germany and saw some amazing old bands, including Brocas Helm, Bitch, Agent Steel, Enforcer, Damien Thorne, Metalucifer, as well as the reunion of the legendary Satan featuring the line-up from "Court in the Act".
It actually came about because I had been running a campaign on Myspace to make website for bands that had been forgotten. I thought it was a huge tragedy that no one would hear their music, so I made sure people were putting it up on various sites, and I actually got contacted by one of the bands I did that for called Hellhound, and found out that they had recently reunited for the first time since 1988.
They actually got us in at Keep it True and we were able to hang out and everything. It was a fucking great time :D
