So uh... Based on the demo... I think I might have to buy Sniper Elite V2!
I'm gobsmacked.

You serious? I think it's obvious that this is from City Interactive.
I can't name a single game from CI that was better then mediocracy.
Although, games engine is Cryengine 3 which is a good thing for start.
@2 Except it's not by City Interactive, it's actually by Rebellion Developments. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is being developed by City Interactive.
@someguy2, baaah... damn, i thought that this is Ghost Warrior 2. I'm so confused with these two games.
Is it really that good? I checked out Rebellion wiki list and last games were not really that fantastic to be honest.
I thought it had something to do with City Interactive too ;)
.. But this is better than Ghost Warrior in every way.
Thing is, it's not an epic AAA game at all, it's just all centered around an extremely appealing shooting mechanic.
Of course there's the traditional bulletime sequence where you watch the bullet fly, shown in beautiful cinematic angles, but that's only the beginning.
After it flies through someone, the bullet actually tumbles out the other side, losing it's trajectory AND its shape, and if you're really lucky, it actually shows the guy you're shooting UNDER HIS SKIN, so you can see all the bones and organs while the bullet passes through.
It's absolutely outstanding.
The game is really simple, and I'm sure we can tear it apart 5 different ways if we want to, but I can't remember being this entertained by a single mechanic since the first Solder of Fortune.
You only get the cinematics if it's a kill, either the last kill or a good kill. I shot one guy, and followed up before he could recover, so he was at an awkward angle. In slow motion I watched my bullet go in through his kneecap, shattering all the bones in his leg up through his ass, smashing his pelvis before exiting.
Never seen anything like it.
I can't even imagine what this must be like in multiplayer. It has full campaign coop and versus modes.
The demo is really short, so maybe the full game will be total crap. Either way I'm totally willing to buy it and find out.
Try the demo. Even if you hate it, you have to see this!

^this is the most recent gameplay and it is a great demo
My God....I must have played the demo like 20 times now!The X-ray kill cam is just a simple, cheap gimmick...but it's freaking awesome!!!The nuts shot...oh my...the triple penetration...good lord(no I'm not talking about porn you sick bastards :) )and the explosive shot are just staggering!
I' honestly don't care how will the rest of this game turn out it's day one fo sho an as DSB said...you stil haven't played the demo?!?!?Go and get it NAO!!!!
I know Edo, spot on.
Any problem you may have with the rest of the game just disappears the moment you pull the trigger.
It's definitely one of those demos you play several times. I'm about to start my fourth :P
@DSB
Yeah, the fact is,this demo is pretty short and after a while I was finishing it under 8 minutes and not because I was playing it too fast but because I basically knew when and how to take each shot but it was still thrilling as hell.I must have triggered like 100 of those bullet time x-ray kill cameras(mind you that I was playing almost all of the time on hard-sniper elite)but could have sworn that only small number of them(maybe 10 % or even less) were the same and that's what's keeping that joy of that first one triggered so amazingly fulfilling. Now,as you said there is no doubt in my mind that the critics will most probably tear this game apart and say that "the story was boring, that the enemy AI is simply non existent(which is true for the most part),that the SP is awfully short and that this kill cam is the only thing worth playing this game for"and they would be right!!But here's the thing(AGAIN)I don't care and this is will be one of those rare times when I will agree with the critics but say "SO fucking what!?!?"
Depends on the critic I reckon. I'd have no problem pointing out the things that were lacking, but rewarding the game based on the enjoyment I got out of it.
Things aren't always the sum of their parts. Then again, it could turn out to be frustrating and cheap in the long run. Either way, it easily feels better than the Ghost Warrior demo. I knew I wasn't going to buy the game after playing that one.
I've got my preorder in, so you best believe I'll have an opinion on it once it comes out :P
@DSB You and your opinion....pfft :P .
Wow, this game was not in my agenda. I'll get the demo later this week then! Can't wait to see how it is.
Similarly I really enjoyed the demo. Big grin with each slow-mo shot. Like the idea of a proper sniper game where you have to allow for distance and wind too. Big fly in the ointment is MP support. Just co-op for consoles is a massive dropping of the ball. This could be fantastic with friends competitively. The PC version should have TDM though.
I especially like the fact that wind isn't exaggerated like it might be in some games. A bullet actually isn't that senstitive to wind, it's mostly a factor for snipers because they operate with longer distances, and so the bullets manage to slow down before getting there, making them vulnerable to things like wind.
Of course modern snipers would always adjust their sights for those factors, so their crosshairs are usually spot on, dead center. I don't know if they did that even during WW2, but it does make the mechanics even more entertaining.
It's a bit of a douchey move to keep Hitler for the preorders though. That just strikes me as the last thing you'd want to take out. Give preorderers a bonus mission or two, but don't take away the prize for everybody else.
And yeah, according to the splash screen on PC, it'll have 12 player versus mode (6v6 I'm guessing) and full campaign coop. I love the sound of that. I hope they manage to keep the killcams in coop, and maybe even DM.
The only thing I'm missing is a YouTube upload feature :P
I just finished the demo for the second time. I can say this is definitely a must-buy. That bullet time mechanic is crazy. I just witnessed as my bullet pierced through the skull and spine of an enemy sniper. The AI is stupid sometimes, but I enjoyed it a lot. Can't wait to get it!
Because I'm in the US I've been able to play it today. I've done two missions and two rounds of TDM.
The missions are really less fun than the demo, usually because the range involved tends to be shorter. It's way more fun when you have range, which you don't have for the better part of the full mission from the demo.
The second mission is on a factory of some sort where you do get some range, and that really jives a lot better.
I'm a little disappointed by how little you get to really appreciate the game on Sniper Elite difficulty. The wind is often not a factor because "he's in a windless environment" inside a valley or a city or something like that.
I really don't see the point. The whole fun of playing on that difficulty is accounting for wind.
It is pretty cool to boobytrap bodies and put down tripwires, but ultimately you have to guess where the stupid as shit AI is going to go next, and you really won't know until your second playthrough. Not the best implementation of that mechanic.
I think it really shines in multiplayer though. It's exactly what you would expect, Enemy at the Gates style dueling. If you're the kind that bitches about campers and "Waaaah, unfair kill" then this is obviously your worst nightmare, because all snipers are humongous assholes. And that's why it's fun. There's also a lot of pressure on you to figure out how to range your shots, and that's awesome. A difficulty curve for a multiplayer game.
For some reason the game chooses to equip all the German snipers with Gewehr 43's, but you can't actually pick them up, they just disappear when they die, and so in the multiplayer the Germans start out using the US M1903 Springfield rifle.
Who's been selling the Germans US equipment? I didn't know Halliburton got in on WW2.
Models and cities are beautiful, but the AI is extremely stupid, and that really shows up more in the final game than it did in the demo. I had one German freeze in place, looking away from me. I guess I'm so good they just stop and wait for me to kill them, because they know it's gonna happen anyway.
My conclusion so far is that if you're on the fence, you're definitely going to want to stay there. It's a budget game with a full price, and it really isn't worth more than 20 euro, unless you're a total geek for this sort of thing and really want some more.
Also, it's a lot of fun to play with Americans. They're very sporting about the whole thing, so usually there are pats on the back all the way around after a game, rather than a lot of whining and "U CHEETZ".
As I said http://www.edge-online.com/reviews/sniper-elite-v2-review 4/10...they'll shred this game to pieces, apparently that kill cam isn't enough to save this game and even that "gets old pretty fast" ...something I find very hard to believe.Anyway, you played 2 SP missions so far?I heard there are eleven of them. How long did it took you to finish them, and was opportunity to approach them in different ways there or were they straight forward linear?
5.4/10 for 360 & 5/10 on PS3 from NowGamer. Must admit, not entirely unexpected but would still like to see more of it (preferably before making a purchasing decision!).
@Edo, you can pretty much do whatever you like. It's not the most sandboxy game in the world, and I haven't been playing it stealthily, but if you want to distract the guards and sneak past you can do that.
You have mines, tripwires and shootable dynamite that you can use to set traps. Since any non-alerted Germans will go to check out their dead buddies, it's pretty satisfying to put a mine down as a boobytrap.
It's just not nearly as well engineered as Splinter Cell or other stealth games.
I don't know how many missions there are, but I'd estimate spending 15-25 minutes on each mission so far. They're not hard to get through.
I think the real draw here is the multiplayer. That's what gives it longevity.
Second glimpse update.
It's actually redeeming itself quite a bit. The first part of the factory mission is pretty easy no matter how you play it.
The silent way means shooting in between commands being blasted all over the factory by a speaker system. If you shoot while it's blaring, it'll drown out the shot, actually giving you a silent kill. Very rewarding.
If you just want to blast everyone, there's enough distance to do that.
Second part is sabotaging the factory from the inside. That's tricky as hell on Sniper Elite difficulty. You have 30 rounds for your SMG, and that place is crawling with Germans. Two bursts or so will see you dead, and they shoot fast.
It's a lot of fun, very challenging, and I'll have spent well over 30 minutes on this when I'm done.
And no, the killcams definitely don't get boring.
My best shot so far is from the demo. I shot one German through the head and watched the ricochet kill the guy behind him by passing through his stomache. It doesn't get old :P
I've only had a very short look at the coop. I can't tell if it's like the campaign, because I haven't gotten to the mission I tried to coop, but at the very least it's like Spec Ops in Modern Warfare, only without the horde element, and with objectives to accomplish.
It has all the features of the singleplayer though. I'll have to play some more before I can say.
@DSB Ok thanks and hey..here's a fresh look on the game when it comes to reviews 8.2/10 from GameInformer http://www.gameinformer.com/games/sniper_elite_v2/b/xbox360/archive/2012/05/01/rebellion-delivers-a-visceral-wwii-shooter.aspx ."I went into Sniper Elite V2 with one desire: Disfigure Nazis from hundreds of meters away. The game delivers on this core mechanic beautifully."...this is all I needed to hear :) .
i enjoyed the demo a lot. couldn´t find it in the german xblm or psn :P
got it from my us psn account now.
demo really is fun but i can see this getting old real fast. the demo also lacks some polish. the sound is awful too. wish they would´ve taken more time/ money to make this game better. the concept is pretty cool indeed.
might pick it up cheap sometime.
It just keeps getting better for me. The tutorial sucks, and the majority of the mission from the demo (first in the game) isn't very good, but it has pretty much only gone up from there.
I'm at Opernplatz at the moment, the levels seem to keep getting bigger, the different scopes from the different rifles are challenging, and Sniper Elite difficulty is making sure I get my moneys worth in terms of playing time.
You definitely shouldn't miss it if it goes on sale for around the 25 euro/dollar mark. And if you like sniping, then I don't see any way around it. It's well above average in my book at this point.
It also really reminds me how badly I want a new Hidden and Dangerous. Fat chance of that happening...
My brother bought it so i had the chance to play it for some time. As DSB said, the killcam doesn't get boring. I actually felt kind of sick when i realized i had a big grin on my face after shooting someone's eye out. Because that's exactly what i planned and it was a rather difficult shot.
It is pretty satisfying to be honest. You plan your shot, the killcam hits in and you see it play out the way you intended it.
The best shot so far:
German soldier, running to cover, shot one of his balls off.
You read that right.
Players of the first Sniper Elite should start at a higher difficulty though, since the game is way too easy on the normal difficulty setting. Having that said the game is much more enjoyable than the first one. Every little encounter with snipers just feels amazing.
There are areas where it's really loud, so you have the chance to hide your shots. You you just pick one enemy at a time.
What i don't like is how the writing seems to have changed a lot. The hero of the story (If you want to call him that) suddenly spouts one one-liner after another. The russians are also evil again, at one level trying to shot a V2 at London.
Another thing that's is rather annoying is how the soldiers don't really react to your actions. You shoot them one by one, and they are still talking in a very monotone voice "Come out!". Even if one soldier is left standing you'll hear him shout orders to others. I just wish there would be a better indicator of how many enemies are left.
I turned the music down, it's really bad, stresses you out and fucks with the atmosphere.
Are there any decent night missions with stealth sniping? It was annoying sniping in the demo and then soon as the first shot went everyone would see you :/ Would be nice if there was a mission where you can pick one by one
@Yoshi:
Yes. There are night missions and missions where you can pick one by one, as long as the area is loud enough.
Screw the dumb AI and the rest of the gameplay. The killcam is so viciously gorgeous and entertaining - nothing comes even close. I'll get it.
Ahh that's nice to know :D Maybe I'll try and pick it up at some point... no pennies at the moment unfortunately :(
@DSB Playing it wright now(the SP anyway)I'm on the 5th mission at the moment(6th if you count the tutorial)and as yourself I am enjoying it more and more. The first two missions were were pretty straightforward linear but the factory mission after that(the one you have mentioned)was pretty awesome(and more open for that matter)and reminded me of Return to Castle Wolfenstein(one of my favorite shooters of all time). The later levels seem to be getting tougher and they take much more time to finish(especially if you play on sniper elite)and I'm enjoying them immensely. One thing that seems forced though is collecting the gold and sniping the wine bottles but hey it's not like anyone is forcing me to do it.
Heres a little breakdown of me playing through the first mission proper and the moments of sheer delight that it brought.
1. Holy shit I just shot that guy in the testicles.
2. Holy shit I just shot that guy in the face and the bullet passed out and exploded the guys eye behind him.
3. Holy shit I just threw a rock near a truck and killed 3 guys by shooting the feul cap.
4. Holy shit I just killed that guy by shooting the grenade on his belt.
5. Holy shit I just killed three guys by grouping them togethor with a rock and shooting one guys grenade. Again.
6. Holy shit I just blew up a truck full of guys whilst it was moving, then blew up another one with placed explosives.

Really want to kill another sniper through his scope now while mutter the Lords Prayer under my breath.
