I could go either way on the game at the moment. I am enjoying it but I can't see a long future ahead in it for me. I already find myself skipping through the non-class mission conversations as they result in pretty standard kill-mob or fetch-quest mission.

There are some things I love about it; the crafting for one, is fantastic and it's the kind of thing I can (and have) get stuck into. On the flip side though, it's a little too easy to come by what you need, mats wise, and there isn't much challenge to it. I feel it revolves too much around how many credits I have to send them on missions rather than the fun to go out and find what I need.

The cosmetic aspects of the game are a bit hit and miss for me too. I love the combat animations and the most of the lightsaber/blaster effects are great. Some worlds look brilliant too, I really like Hoth and Tatooine. What I feel was a let-down was the limited customisation options of both my character and my companions. Also the variation in gear is a little disappointing, mostly because there is hardly any variation at all apart from the odd change of tone or colour.

The stories are great and if anything, that is one thing I would like to finish on as many characters as I can. But this being my favourite part is also what disappoints me the most… I feel like I am paying a sub for what could have been a really amazing KOTOR 3. I honestly feel like the SP portions of this game are great and the MMO parts of it are a little basic, almost add-ins simply to make it a sub-based MMO.

I currently enjoy the game to the fullest. I don't think mats are too easy to come by, maybe the basic mats, but once you decide to make artifact items, then the mats are really scarce IMO. I do however have a problem with the animations. I don't like that when i stab someone with my lightsaber, and it goes through him, he can just walk away. I know TotalBiscuit also touched on the subject, by suggesting that every character would have some piece of armor made out of cortosis for example, which would solve the problem for me. Other than that, i don't see any problems with the game :P

A limited, linear experience.

Quests
All much of the same but with voice acting. As an Imperial Sith Assassin - its almost like every mad scientist wants brains or animals to test. Class story is a welcome side track but this is Star Wars - they use comlinks, so why must I keep going back and forth to the bloody ship to talk to people?!!!!! Or the far end of a planet?!

PvP
Clearly Bioware dont understand or like the 'War' part in Star Wars. PvP is woeful. Hundreds of players claiming every other class is OP but because Bioware have been just lazy, there is no bracket system - makes it tough on nOObs to get involved, no rankings, no warzone selection, 90% of games appear to be Huttball. Throw in to the mix ability lag and the problems surrounding tabbing/targeting only makes matters worse

PvP zones
Its there - honest, if you can find someone to fight!

UI
Probably the worst UI to grace an MMO in years. You cant customise anything! Companion completed mission boxes get in the way when they appear, the hud for pvp overlaps your left/right quickslot options, you cant customise or move the companion ability bar(unless you want it to overlap your second ability quick shot bar, meaning that you cant use certain abilities!) - cant move any menus.

Overall, there are just so many other flaws in the game. After 6 years in development, pvp is no where the standard of games like Rift and the biggest worry right now, is Biowares ability to churn out fixes. Right now, its once a week - which simply isnt enough considering some of the glaring issues.

Will it offer enough to keep players going? I think even the most die hard Star Wars fans will find it difficult to justify paying £9 a month for this.

You can accept whatever quest you like to do, and you can explore whatever planet you'll like to explore. How is that linear? Please do explain.

Quests:
No they're not.
EDIT: If you didn't have to go back to the questgiver, wouldn't you just whine about how you got your reward through a holocall? -.-'

PvP:
I get a lot of Void Star, not so many Huttball. Also, if you cared to read up on your lore, you'll know there is no war between the republic and the empire as of right now, it will happen in about 4-5 years. You don't even need to read the lore, just log into the game, and it will tell you that!

UI:
Addons are on their way, relax dude.

I'll justify it by this game being awesome!

You basically whine about a game that is a few weeks old, because it is new and show symptoms thereof?... seriously?

Yes you do. In my current class story, I lost count how many times I went back and forth to see Lord Zash. Then, later(not putting in spoilers), again back and forth to speak with your crew when a comlink would do.

PvP
Yes - thats just my point about the 'War' missing from Star Wars and Biowares approach to just keeping everything'safe'.

UI-
You accept this after SIX years? Every single MMO that has been released these past few years has a UI you can at least customise WITHOUT the need for add ons. Its a major design flaw and totally unacceptable in any MMO launching.

To end
Its a big budget MMO and despite decent MMOs out there, this has managed to miss alot of key elements (as already explained) and for me, PvP is shameful. Bioware have been nothing more than lazy.

Rift launched with brackets, the ability to select your warzone/front, rankings, a tab so you could see your teams score DURING the pvp battle.

For a game like SWTOR that harks on about choice, where is it in pvp?

In parts, SWTOR brings nothing new to the table and in other parts, takes a GIANT step back. 1 million users at launch isnt much for such a hyped game and I simply can not see how this game will retain and importantly grow, its user base.

6 months from now will see the real test - I would like to say once the 30 days is up - that will have an impact as well. Its a galaxy far, far away from being an outstanding MMO today and within 12 months time, unless Bioware seriously flex some creative muscle and are allowed to continue where the LucasArts producers left off before being let go.

No, a comlink wouldn't do. I do also know the class story for the Sith Inquisitor. Would you really tell such sensitive information over a holocall? They can get intercepted, and this is a practice done so often. Both by the empire but also the SIS, not to mention, even the Hutt Cartel.

PvP
You're right, i guess there is no civil war on Alderaan, LucasArts and BioWare, and EA are wrong about that, you are of course right.
Secondly, PvP obviously isn't what the game is about, if that is why you play this game, then yes, it would be wise for you to stop. At least until they shift focus and dumb it more down, like we've seen with other MMORPG's.

UI
You can still choose what quickbars to have, keybindings, if the slots in the bars should be locked, et cetera. All the basics are there, it is just the fancy addon stuff that is missing.

The UI is crap. Its shit. Whats the point of quickbars if your HUD covers some of them up? You cant move the menus, you cant move anything. The healthbars, icons etc are all stuck in the middle and cant be shifted.

Voidstar - the map top right covers up your quickbar - it cant be moved. Every single low budget MMO has menus/bars that you can actually move to suit YOUR personal style. It doesnt require any add ons - just some one with a brain in UI design.

During combat/pvp if your companion returns from one of their 'crafting' missions 1/4 of the screen is covered - pointless! A small icon would be enough. Yet ANOTHER design flaw. The game is littered with it.

And why are you saying about dumbing down pvp? It doesnt need dumbing down, again, just someone with a brain who knows the basic requirements of pvp and delivers them. Its only been SIX years. The Bolster system they have in game for lower level players doesnt work. Ive rolled a new toon - lvl 12 and simply die within a couple of hits against a lvl 50.

This is why they urgently need to bring in a bracket system because pvp will put alot of new players off as they simply cant compete.

Hell, even SWG back in 2003 had all these basics nailed so how come a brand new MMO cant?

You clearly love it, no matter how poor it is - which is fine but lets just see how things shape up 6 months from now when populations fall, servers merge and lack of updates/fixes will send the remaining player base into a spin.

I'm glad I cancelled the collectors edition from Amazon US because everyone who did purchase it was VERY disappointed with the exclusive in game vendor (1 item to purchase!) amongst other things.

Once my 30 days is up, I wont be returning to it and I am a bit upset because I really wanted this game to offer more than it did and hell, even I have come away stunned at just how flawed it is, but in areas I didnt expect.

Well, no point in continuing this. I can say i was satisified with my CE, but i should also point out (if you didn't get it from my previous writings) i'm a big nerd, and i'm also a collector, that added the 150-250$ statue to the collection, and found the journal to be a good read. Yes i do like the game, i will continue play it, and i do hope that you won't. Just so you can leave it now, when it is in this release state, and maybe try it out in about a year again when it is in a better shape :)

I do have to agree with Grim on a lot of his points. I get the same feeling, one thing I said to some guildies is that this game feels like it's arrived about two years two late.

I'm still enjoying it but only thanks to the story missions. I want to see my smuggler through to the end. I'm not even bothering with completing planets if I finish my class quest first.

The UI and PVP are pretty woeful. I don't think that can be argued. They went into it with an almost SP mind frame in that people will just accept the layout as it is. I will give them some benefit of the doubt with it being their first MMO and all but really, just by playing some of the other MMOs out there at the moment you can get a sense of what should be readily available.

I do also think the one patch a week approach is a bit lame. Trion spoilt us with their excellent customer service and fine tuning Rift as much as possible and when they could.

I'm pretty tired of the PVP already. Mixing 50s and 10s is a bit silly but I think it's due to reducing the queue times as the server populations seem to be extremely low. I think the figures being talked about are about 2000 people per server, which is low. Apparently future warzones will be more mixed faction combat - which I absolutely hate the idea of.

I just don't think they're cut out to make this MMO work. It's still early days but what we see here is the foundations and a lot of it is pretty weak. I think only the die-hard will stick this one out.

I think Bioware have shot themselves in the foot by having low server capacity - thus creating huge Qs to (probably) make it look like that the game is over subscribed and busy, when the reality is - 1 million users and it couldnt cope?! Makes me laugh.

They have announced today that lvl 50s will have their own brackets and some of the basic requirements in pvp that they left out, will be coming - but @ £9 a month - how long will it take to deliver stuff that every single basic MMO has at launch.

Biowares lack of experience in MMOs sticks out like a comedy moment in Eastenders and for all EA's effort in PR/Marketing to land those big(paid for) review scores wont stop this ending up with probably a smaller player base than SWG

@GrimRita Stop accusing everyone of being paid off. They are not.

In any case, I have actually enjoyed the PvP a fair lot, currently valor rank 50, and still going strong. Just play with some friends and have fun - yes, it's chaos, yes, stuns / knockbacks will make you angry, but it's fun.

I dont have any problems with the 20x Stuns you get - if you are carrying the ball(Hutball) that is to be expected. I do pre-mades as well. But if you are going to attract new players into the fray, brackets are needed and its missing.

What makes pvp so frustrating that Huttball IS alot of fun, pvp COULD be great but why launch it when its only half done, simply doesnt make sense. It all points to EA pushing this out in time for Xmas and to please share holders.
And I do believe EA parted with some cash for that extra large coverage in PC Gamer. And look, it scored 93% - go figure?!

I, for one, love SWTOR. Sure there are fetch quests and the likes cause, you know... It's a FREAKING MMORPG!!! Other than that, I love the fact that your choices do matter. For example I'm an imperial agent and go full-dark so *SPOILER* I decided to help Darth Jadus. Well, now my story is completely different from that of one of my guildies who happens to be a full-light agent.
PvP is a little chaotic, true, but it's really fun and the bonuses to lower-levels is not such a bad idea. Sure lvl 50 characters still have the advantage cause of their wider range of powers but at least you can PvP at any level and be sure that there will be enough people to play with.

Erth is right. I know before release I was hoping for a decent "traditional" MMO but this is so "traditional" it barely tries to do any thing outside of the box.

It really baffles me why they spent so much money and voice acting for an MMO when this could have been pumped into one hell of a single player game. I think a lot of it for me is the fact I'm bit ("bit" is a possible understatement) of a jaded MMO gamer.

I guess now that the dust has settled and the hype is over I can look at this with a more critical eye and as I keep saying, I am having fun in the game and I'm looking forward to hitting 50. I'm just sad this will most likely definitely not be a long term investment and will mostly not be the popular MMO I was hoping it would be.

If the game hasn't hit 2 million in a few more months, I think it's safe to say it never will.

they spent so much money on the CGI and marketing campaign in most cases to be honest.

Full voice Acting was done before by Sony Online Entertainment - EverQuest II.
Voice Acting does not cost a lot of money to be honest, except if you are hiring some ultra Holywood voice actors.
SWTOR voice acting is good, but it's not like something jaw dropping.

Also, i agree with you about "hype is over" thing and to be honest... Thats good.

I do think it's a good game. It's not "bad" at all and there is a lot of fun to be had in game. I just don't think it's revolutionary in any way.

And what annoys me further is the fact that they keep making announcements of "new features" when really, they're features that should be there anyway!

@ Erth, I don't think it's jaw-dropping either but it is good. I am starting to hear some lines repeated by my character far more than I would like though.

I have no idea how they will keep on top of this game though with the team they have at the moment. Considering the speed in which they are patching the game and how long it took to make in the first place, I'm a little worried that proper content updates will be far and few between.

They should of had at least one or two "major" patches but so far I haven't seen anything sort out half the issues. And it seems to me after they put out one patch, I find bugs that weren't there before haha!

The whole Jedi Knight flirt with Kira and lose story bug has probably been one of the worst I have heard about. There was a a lot of angry jedi over that one.

Well, IMO it's a MMORPG for people who like SP games. I was fed up with MMOs but the storyline dragged me into SWTOR and now I'm getting excited about the MMO part thanks to my guild. I don't deny the game has faults, bugs and annoying stuff but it really delivers on its promise.

Grimrita, on my server (Full, queues during primetime), there are maybe 4-5 huttballs going, and maybe 1-2 civil war / voidstar. With brackets, there would be none. I'll take the badly balanced non-bracketed version any day of the week.

THe next content patch has already been mentioned that Bioware plans on adding more customizable options along with the bracket PVP for lvl 50 because of obvious reasons (better gear that is more PVP orientated and more skills) but they will be keeping the lower levels the same way.

As right now SWTOR has 350k concurrent players not even WOW has that many, last I heard it was 250k and that was 3 months ago. SO that shows there is a desire to play this game we will all see how it will progress as far as development, content patches over the next 6 months but I honestly don't see it taking a dive as much as other MMOs have like AOC, Rift, WAR, Champions Online.

I am personally enjoying this game a lot more than I have in my 6 years of playing WOW and trying other MMOs. I have already put in a 3 month sub and really can't wait to see what Bioware plans on doing with this game. I have a 35 Imperial Agent Sniper, 22 Bounty hunter. The story is obviously the key component and couldn't believe what they allow you to have control over at the act 1 which changes how the story progresses compared to an IA that picked something completely different. That right there wants to me to play another IA to try out the other option.

I have enjoyed the PVP alot usually I hate it because in other MMOs you have to be top level or to the end of a bracket so you don't get owned by someone that is 5-7 levels higher than you. THis bolster tactic is a great idea, I was able to play as a lvl 14 sniper in voidstar and huttball and get 4th place in damage and kills compared to there players that were much higher than me. THats awesome, it just makes the game about skill and tactic more than who is a higher level.

I have had some bugs here and there but very minor ones nothing that made me get mad at the game or made me throw my keyboard. Only major one was the chat bug which didn't allow me to see or respond in guild or party chat but that has been fixed. Everything is perfect for a launch game and now I am just going to wait and see what they will do with this awesome MMO.

In order for this game to be profitable they just need 500k subs, they don't need 2 million. Even WOW had a slow simmer it didn't get those fat numbers until a year after a release closer to the BC expansion.

THe ques are solved but people still flock to the already full servers so that not exactly Bioware's fault. THere are 10 light servers on EU side and but you have 3-4 FUll pop servers on peak hours. Apparently EU can't get a hint at what is cause of these ques.

It has 350k concurrent player at peak hours on the US server. Its safe to say that not even SWG, EQ2 had those numbers combined. Really you are just an anti-EA hater and you just can't accept the fact that it is actually doing very well.

Oh Phoenix - your rear end is talking again.

Just to touch on something re SWG. Back in 2003, it launched with 250k players and after six months grew to 500k concurrent players, before the dark cloud fell on the game.

This at a time when a) SWG wasnt released in Europe, only NA until late October b) Gaming PCs to run this game werent as wide spread as today and internet connections werent always broadband.

Comparing SWG to SWTOR when you look at the wider picture, it hasnt made the kind of impact I am certain EA were hoping for.

The fetch quests are probably the staple diet of all uncreative MMOs today and here, its no different. But did Bioware really have to voice act every single quest?! Will this continue, and if so, at what cost in terms of $$$ value and, wait time for the player base.

Your class 'story' I can understand but players are skipping some of the fetch quests, much like players do with txt bubbles to get the quest and rush off to grind it.

And yet again, you fail to actually read what I have written.If you look closely, I actually said Huttball was alot of fun but right now pvp is half baked. I fail to see why you would launch something that is different but fail to actually make the mechanics behind it work.

Not a word on the UI either? Dont want to cast doubt over your shiny new game?

Proof will be in 6 months from now come back and lets see who is right then.....

Yes, my views arent arse kissing EA but my views have foundation. I even said myself, that the stuff I hate right now, wasnt stuff I expected to hate - which stunned me, being frank. With an endless list of design flaws, I bet your bottom dollar that I am not the only player thinking 'hmmm wtf is this?!' and if you want a player base to grow, you want to have a good user experience and it falls flat on its face.

I dont know if the Huttball issue is down to server or faction. On Nightmare Lands, Huttball appears 90% of the time. I think last week, I played just 3 or 4 Civil War/Void star with over 50 Huttballs.

Personally, I don't see much point in quoting pop figures at the moment. It's still the first month, it's a brand new MMO, it's probably been a Xmas purchase for a lot of people and last of all, it is Star Wars.

I'm actually a little surprised they're only just over a million, I was expecting at least 2 million easy at launch. Regardless of what numbers EA need to be successful, if they end up with less than 1 million it will be quite a shock to all and will quickly fade into the realms of quiet money makers rather than something a dev/publisher would continue to push to the masses.

I do think we will see more players drop-off than new players sign-on after the first couple of months. I'm undecided at the moment but I will probably keep it up for at least another month or two.

I already said the next content patch in February will be adding more customizable options. It doesn't bother me at all, it does what it needs to do and even gives the option to turn off chat or the tracker, controlling the alpha on the map. The only thing I would want the ability to add another row. Its not a game breaker for me.

You never specified how it is "half-baked". Must be easy making blanket statements.

Huttball only appears because of faction imbalance and Bioware just wrote about that there are far more imperials than repubs. SO Huttball will triigger a lot because its the only one that allows the same faction to compete against eachother. Bioware have said they plan on this option for all the Warzones not just Huttball.

Riiight. Because SWG was so successful that even the lead designer who was at GDC Online in October had said that game was a huge mistake and he wished he had never worked on it when I spoke to him. THat game barely at 50k users at the end of it. Wouldn't use that as an example of anything other than what not to do.

WOW was down for 4 days for unknown reason other than "we are working on it" along with que times that were upwards of 8 hours on some servers. If they could get 10 million subs from that start, Bioware can easily get it since their launch was pretty damn smooth compared to the last few MMOs launch the exception being Rift. Which Rift is a pretty stable game but I don't see their number climbing so it just proves you have no idea of how this game will progress. You just believe that everyone sees it your way.

To be fair though PB, you must surely admit that having mixed faction WZ’s is very much against the nature of the game itself. I mean, I’m all for low queue times but I don’t want that to be at a loss of faction competitiveness. The two sides are at war after all and fighting together completely breaks that for me.

They will surely have to implement being able to choose what WZ you want to play in too… Peragus server is usually full at peak times or at least heavy most of the other times and we seem to just get Voidstar most of the time with the occasional Huttball or Aldaraan come up. Saying that though, even when the server is full there is usually less than 100 people in each area.

What would you suggest? Bioware can't force people to roll republic. That would do more damage than good. ANd its not mixed faction WZ's its just based on what would fill the groups up more. If there are more Imperials than Republics than you will see Huttball come up because there imperial can fight against each other. But I don't believe they will mixing Repubs with the imperials to be on the same team, that hasn't been mentioned at all. They just said the WZs will be doing something like Huttball allowing the same faction to fight against each other so there is more variety in the game than being stuck with Huttball 90% of time. I don't see the PVP instances as part of the overall story those are just games I play to break the monotony of questing. same with Space battles.

Having mixed faction pvp will be a joke and clearly show Biowares plain lazy. The ONLY solution is to bring in cross server pvp, like every other MMO has today.

If they decide to mix factions, just to keep yet another design flaw afloat, they should just rename the game to Space Battles and stick two fingers up at Star Wars in the process.

By not having pvp brackets at launch has damaged pvp. New players find it hard to get involved as the bolster system doesnt work(see up coming patch notes!), and of course the tidal wave of abuse by more established players when they do things wrong.

Simple brackets 1-20, 21-40, 41-49 and 50 would have made life easier. Right now, SO many players are quitting pvp when Huttball appears for the 100,000th time in a row its not even funny. Which is a shame, because Huttball is a good idea but even die hard fans find it difficult to swallow when it is rammed down their throat every 15 games in a row.

@PB re your earlier response. Lets come back in 6 months and see who is right?

I play PVP quite reguarily I have never seen anyone quit in game at least on my in my team if the opposing team has members that leave they easily get filled up because the scoreboard shows the full amount of players. Just because you have seen it doesn't mean it is happening as a whole. And we all know how you like to hyperbole thing especially when its dealing with EA.

I already had mentioned they were doing a bracket for level 50 players because of obvious reasons. THey had mentioned they were planning on doing this in beta. SO I fail to see your point?
