The ideal game for me has nothing to do with gameplay or mechanics (mostly) or graphics and looks or the multi-player and co-op elements. No, I'd say the most important thing for me is progression and change. Its why I'd say I don't play multi, because the only progression you get is levelling and thats just some unlocks and numbers, I want something like story progression or character development. Nothing really changes when you level up your just a level higher.
Its why I'd say my preferred genre is RPGs, just think about the amount of progression you get in that. Story lines are integral and comes with that is character development, I also will probably be able to determine when the storyline progresses and which side missions I and then theres levelling which isn't just a number but actually lets me unlock things that will totally change the way I play the game like invisibility (as opposed to smoke grenades in multi).
My favourite developer has to be Bioware even now. Yes its moving away from RPG but its character development is still the best around, you actually really give a shit about them and then often the game will put you in a position where one might die. I swear to God when you have to chose between Ashley and Kaiden It was insanely difficult.
I want to move though a game like its real, I want it to invoke emotions in me that make me think and make me make difficult decisions. Even though I see the fun in just shooting stuff and watching it burn, My favourite games will always be things like Fallout 3 Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Old Republic, Elder scrolls, and those are from only two developers.
I would say I hate it when games are repetitive. Like Serous Sam... WTF? I don't want to shoot the same enemies thousands of times in the same mission. Don't put me in a fucking tiny box whereby you spawn practically endless enemies at me over and over and over and over again. EA seems to like spawning enemies at you over and over now, like in Dragon Age 2 and Dead Space 2, I don't want to finish a fight just for more of the same to come down from nowhere for me to fight again.
Difficultly does nothing for me either, In Demons Souls its mostly just about trail and error. You can just randomly die because of some unforeseen trap and have to start all over again. Now why would I want to play the exact same area again? I've already been though it once, the next times hardly going to be more fun.
Repetition is why I'd say I don't really get hooked on those little iPhone Apps or why I can't get into multi, its just the same thing over and over. Now I can see why difficulty and multi are thing people enjoy its just for me I get no satisfaction from being able to rape people online, I'd probably be like 'well I'm really good at this now so I should move on to the next'. Then if its difficult I just get a feeling of relief rather than triumph.
Anyway that was a little long winded and I'm quite tried right now so if it doesn't really make sense sometimes that would be the sleep deprivation. So that how I feel about the whole gaming experience.
What makes my gaming 'pleasure' 'tick'.

good post i am very fond of bioware but i am still annoyed EA has a say in matters especially with mass effect which is a franchise i love and feel a bit concerned the franchise could lose it's roots even more with the third game.

@Daytripper
and what are those routes?
Mass Effect the entire series is a game that never toed the line of Bioware's "routes" and the series has made the third person shooting that much tighter which I have enjoyed if its going to look like a TPS shooter it might as well go all the way with the controls like they are doing in the last one with stealth kills and being able to roll along with the further progression of the talent system and the ability to modify gear.@Noodle
" I swear to God when you have to chose between Ashley and Kaiden It was insanely difficult."It sure was it became do I want to kill the whining racist or do I want to kill the emo man.
I agree with you though I do enjoy Bioware games more than most games because they put their writting at the forefront but thats their strength the gameplay on the otherhand is still lacking and especially with their level design which are just used as fillers to get to the dialog and cut scenes. Bioware needs to learn to pick up on their gameplay which like I said they seem to be picking up on with DA2 and ME3.Posted 1 year ago # -
I too worry when a game starts to stray from its roots purely because of economics, though of course I understand that games have to make money... So, for me there are TWO crucial elements for a game.
For me, the number 1 most important thing by FAR, is the game's ability to surprise me. I personally don't like the difficulty in Dark Souls at all, but I do like the ability to wonder off into the middle of nowhere and suddenly find an ancient undead magic teacher with no signposting, or to get a hint as to where a weapon upgrading ember might be from an optional conversation with a blacksmith, and even then he doesn't give too much detail. That's what I love.
That's why I loved Zelda, Dead Space, Metroid Prime, Demon's Souls, Rez and Pikmin.
On the other hand it's also why to some extent I've fallen out of love with Mario, as although the levels now have a tonne of variety, it's not as surprising for me as passing into the Forest of Illusion and thinking "ah, it's all trees and illusions here" while simultaneously wondering what was on the other side.
I guess that's where number 2 comes in. I like consistent game-worlds. A world that makes sense (by its own logical) and is consistent with itself. Am I the only one who thinks this way?

I love the illusion of progress. Levelling up, perk systems are things i need.
Played RAGE & although its good looking, with great gunplay, the lack of levelling up meant i got bored and didn't even finish.
Probably why i can pour so much time into CoD/BF3 online. Yeah its the same thing over and over, but i like the gameplay and theirs always the promise of a new gun/perk :)

Orbit shares half of what mine is in levelling up. Hearing a ding or some such thing is like sweet sweet music to my ears. To top it off though is being able to create a character.
Games like Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Mount and Blade, MMOs… these games are top of my list. Thanks to DSB’s recommendation of Mount and Blade, I’ve spent like 80+ hours in it. Bloody great game once you get really stuck in.

I really dislike this rank system where you just grind to level up, it encourages lone wolf play style and we now have many AFKers in HR. Not to mention ranks are now pointless, a sergeant can destroy a brigadier.
