Thinking about renting this from blockbuster. Anyone played it? Your thoughts? I played the first two but I was a wee lad at the time so I can't really remember what the games were like

Look mate, BUY it, support the devs.
They didnt sell before because people were on he fence about how different they were. If they dont have guns in them or a "2" in the title usually no one looks twice at them..
There both amazing titles and are within my top 5 best ever games. Yes, there that good.In a alot of ways dude, the less I mention the story and so on, the more you'll thank me because both stories are totally out of this world
In fact, the Smithsonian American Art Museum has announced they will be show casing Shadow Of The Collossus there next year.
What does that tell you mate.
Please Please Please, support these classic AMAZING titles. Buy them.

Played ICO today, its by far the best looking HD remake i've seen. Some parts look like stuff you'd see this gen.

@Gek
This is how true HD remakes should be done, Ubisoft and Capcom take heed.
Your totally right though, a game thats more then 10 years old still test the hands of time in level design to visuals.
Ico alone puts many games today to shame.
SoTC on the other hand is officially my top 5 games ever so you can only guess how giddy I was to replay it again this week.

@Geki Apparently a lot of the actual detail in the textures was lost in the original ICO due to the low resolution.
The two games also have some very high level anti-aliasing going on, which is why the textures look so incredibly sharp in the remake. This is most noticeable in ICO because the resolution in that game on the PS2 was significantly</stronger> lower than in Shadow of The Colossus.
Bought the collection as soon as it came out yesterday. ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are my two favourite games ever made, with ICO only just winning out for the spot of first place.
The PS3 boxart is truly horrendous though. Good thing they had that flip-around cover, which I turned around almost instantly!

Oh yeah, didnt notice the doubled sided boxart *flip*.
Actually i'm not much a fan of SotC's boxart (though its pretty cool that it actually uses in-game visuals), i noticed that on the screen where you select the games theres this big painting linking ICO's art to a painting based off SotC, shame that isnt/wasnt on the box.

Gave Blockies a ring and asked if they had any in stock to purchase. They do but they only have 4 (which gobsmacked me) so I'll pick it up tomorrow if no-one else has bought it.

Your gonna buy it, yea good man.

Regretting the decision of buying this. Played SOTC and can't even kill the first colossus. I got all the way up to its head but it knocked me off. I then switched to ICO and ran around a room for five minutes until giving up because I had no fucking clue as to what I was doing

Stick with em Someguy, if the colossus is too hard try searching for some fruit and white lizard tails before taking another shot.
I seem to remember getting stuck at the start of ICO too, but there is always a way.

Ico: Press the switch.
SotC: R2 is your friend.

I just bought this today. I actually never had a chance to play this when they were first released. I was tempted to pick them up for PS2, but I decided to wait when I heard they were doing a HD version.
I started with SOTC because it was the game that most intrigued me of the two. It has a very strange gameplay mechanic (with the whole grip circle thing, and the power of your strikes) but I actually picked it up very quickly. I got the first collosi on my second attempt, and I'm now on the third where things have started to get more challenging.
My first impressions; it had a pretty slow start, but now I am really getting into it, and its very addicting and challenging. Looks great in HD too.
@Ireland Michael Thanks for the heads up about the switch around cover, I only just realised you could do that. It looks way better this way.

I EFFING LOVE SotC!!!!!<3

God, they don't make gamers like they used to.
Someguy2 I guess these games ain't for r you then mate.
Stick to the triple As this month.I guess this is exactly why I love Ico & SoTC, is because there very niche games that will always separate the kinds of gamers that are out there today.
Those who appreciates more then a typical "videogame" type game.
Still baffles me how the shaved head gun handling hardman type games sell buckets, yet games with true class don't?!

There's a difference between enjoying a game and being good at it. I don't play many triple-A games either, the only two I'm getting are Skyrim and RAGE. The fact that after an hour I don't understand the game doesn't mean I'm never going to be able to understand or in fact enjoy it. There's no reason to act like an elitist cunt either.

doesn't help that your comment is a bit douche-esque...
Honestly? You fall off a boss once and instantly regret your purchase?
In the same way, you have trouble on the first room in Ico, and immediately regret your purchase?Sounds to me like you were expecting the game to play itself.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Please refer me to the point where I said I fell off the boss once.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Every boss is in that game is easy to handle as long as you don't hold R1 every second you're on the damn colossus. You should be standing on its back for a few seconds between stabs on its head, and pressing the grab button if you start to fall over.
It's probably the biggest mistake first time players make. Just try to find opportunities to recharge your grip bar. If it's getting anywhere near two thirds empty, it's time to try and recharge.
As for ICO, the button to get out of the first room is staring you in the face. And the proceeding rooms are not even remotely convoluted or difficult to navigate. It might take you a few minutes to figure out how to free Yorda, but that's it.

Give the guy a break. He just needs time to let it grow on him, hopefully.
I remember the first time I ever played ICO, it was a rental, and I didn't "get it". I was also only 19 at the time.
I picked it up again two years later, and gave it another shot. Now? Now it's my favourite game ever made.

Ok, so, I started playing SotC for the first time ever yesterday. It's pretty decent but rather wimpishly, I don't really enjoy killing the Colossi. I mean, I get that he's trying to bring back his missus or whatever, but these big dudes just seem to be minding their own business until I rather selfishly come along and stab them in the head a few times.
I don't often "feel bad" about doing bad things in games but for some reason I'm just not enjoying it in this haha. I have downed three of them so far and I almost felt like I had my fill of killing epically large creatures.
The game itself plays well and looks good. I think they could have done a little more with the controls and given the horse riding a bit of a RDR makeover.
So far I think it's a good game but strangely I don't think it's for me.
Posted 1 year ago # -
I'm kinda surprised that you've downed three and aren't completely hooked!
Your horse can be very frustrating at times, but I always thought the controls added to the authenticity and the feel of it all. I mean in real life, most of us would struggle to control such an animal with any kind of accuracy. Maybe it could have been a bit more RDR-style.. but at least it's not WoW!
It does seem a bit harsh, dishing out a beat down to a pretty harmless and placid giant. Wait until you find Colossi (?) that want to rip your shit up. You won't feel bad about those I assure you.
Stick with it mate. The internet emplores you!

I just love the feeling of awe you get when you see a new colossus for the first time. I honestly just take a long stare at it before I even approach it.
My favourite colossus so far was the flying one; fuck me that fight was EPIC! I cannot describe how hooked I was after taking that bastard down.Posted 1 year ago # -
Haha, I will push on but I certainly don't feel as "hooked" on it as I thought I would be.
Posted 1 year ago # -
That's the beauty of this game right there. Each encounter, despite essentially having the same goal, plays out very differently from the last.
It was years ago when I played, but I remember the flying colossus battle being a big highlight for me too. It took me a while to figure out the water one.
It's a game I never wanted to end !

picked this up, enjoyed it so far yet found both games quite frustrating mainly in the feeling of the controls. really nice HD upgrade for ICO especially, what a charming game yet at times i felt very frustrated with the combat, jumping certain things and the controls themselves. still, both very good at what they offer and very cutesy (ico) and atmospheric (sotc) , last guardian will hopefully smooth the controls.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Yea with all the games ive played between 7 years of playing Ico and SoTC and can admit that my fingers are used to slightly more refines controls but allowances a met once you then remember these games are ultimutely 7 to 10 years old.
SoTC will always be my most favourite game of all time I think and probably love it most for its small short comings. Because how small they are they dnt retract from the entire game.
I so glad more and more people are buying these this time round. Very glad.
