After the Deus Ex comments and a comment on the Ico HD news piece just now ;), I started thinking about games that I *should* like and everyone else seemed to think were manna from heaven that I simply didn't "get". It was like I was from a different planet with them. And I was wondering what "amazing" games you all had that experience with.
I'd add that I'm generally one of those gamers that raves about everything I play, I just *like* games, especially shooters. So when something like the below happens, it leaves me quite perplexed, and generally it'll happen with a universally acclaimed title.
Here are mine, maybe you can persuade me to give them another go...
Half Life 2: I loved HL1 but thought this a poorly paced mess with FAR too many loading screens. It took me years to finish it ( on PC and then finally on 360 ), and I only did it because I wanted to know if it got any better. I didn't imo. I just don't get it. Key moment: Being chased through a block of flats at the beginning, running into a flat and being greeted by a man who shouts "QUICK! Up this ladder" - LOADING SCREEN. Way to ruin the moment. I will admit I enjoyed the next episode a lot more.
BioShock: I'll admit it blew me away for the first hour or two. That plane crash intro is superb. But I truly don't believe it ever matches that intro at any point after that ( that I saw at least ). Yet all but one of my mates froths at the mouth about it. I couldn't get more than halfway through without being bored to tears. Like HL2 I keep on thinking I should give it another crack of the whip.
Deus Ex:HR - It's another one that I simply don't get why it's rated so highly. I'm with DSB on this one and won't reiterate those arguments, except to say, for me, it undoes everything it achieves with incredible regularity. I will finish it, but I can't help feel like I'm forcing myself to do it.
Anyone got any more?
