If you're a Steam friend of mine and you take a peek at the Activity feed, you'll probably have noticed that I recently bought this little Early Access game called Steam Marines... Because I think it is awesome, and I can't shut up about it.
It just speaks to me on so many levels, which I haven't really experienced since Krater.
Krater was not so great in the end though, but this one already is.
It's still in beta (or alpha? or beta?) but it's almost like a montage of the very best elements of turnbased games from the 90's.
Extremely charming animated pixel graphics, four man squad, roguelike permadeath in a randomly generated world that is all squares, complete with witty flavor text, classic "meaningful choice" strategy, and tightly designed classes and monsters.
It really straddles the boardgame and the tactical game, I'd say almost perfectly. Just the right number of features, just the right number of choices, and it's never so hard that you can't figure it out, but also never so easy that you can ever feel safe.
It's not the most extravagant game out there in terms of content, it's not like FTL or one of those where every playthrough just feels 100% unique. It's really about taking your time, enjoying the strategy, and doing whatever you can to adapt and survive.
I've only scratched the surface, but I know I'll be playing it a lot.
And actually I think it's so good that YOU, the most righteous VG247'er should too.
So, given the more than gracious pricetag of the game, I'm gonna give away two copies on a first come, first serve basis!
I'm gonna need your Steam ID, and if it's generic, I'm gonna need some way to find "you". Like the nationality of the profile, or a description of your avatar. Or just a hyperlink!
...But please don't ask just because you want free shit and you don't give a damn. Be someone who appreciates old school turnbased games, otherwise you will almost certainly hate this one anyway.
