3D or not 3D..............that is the question

Can anyone post their experience/opinions on some of these new 3D HDTV's primarily with regards to gaming, but movie comments are welcome too. I'm not looking for brand names, spec comparisons, and such, just your overall 3D experience. Cool? Sucks? Worth it? Not worth it?

I'm in the early stages of researching and we'll be upgrading soon from a 26" HD LCD to a 40-50" LED and I've already got all my specs in mind, but just can't decide if 3D is worth the extra money.

LOVE to hear how some games look in 3D now, and how some people think future/improved 3D games will look (ie Uncharted 3).

I like 3D. I want the option to experience 3D, primarily in my games. But right now, i'm just not sure it's a luxury I need, or can afford.

If you want a 3D gaming. Better to go with Nvidia 3D vision and good rig.

If you want a 3D gaming on your console. Prepare for the sacrifice in visuals. Do you really need it? Console games are already choppy and look ok, so by paying a good amount of money for the 3DTV with glasses you will get a slightly lower details in the game but with 3D. 3D is amazing, yeah, but not for now in the console space.

Maybe wait for the next generation? I already have 3D vision but i won't buy 3DTV for my PS3. I just don't see a reason when you get a sacrifice for no reason at all.

If you really, really want 3D gaming... you need to go with Sony deal for a cheap stuff.

I don't really like 3D. It seems like a pointless venture. Your eyes are specifically designed To make things that look 2d into something that looks more 3d. If it weren't for this 3D wouldn't work at all. What I'm saying is that on you 2d screen you can still see the depth and distances between objects. So ultimately 3d brings nothing meaningful to the table. Yeah it looks sweet at first but after you've seen it ahundred times its not going to affect you, apart from give you headaches.
Obviously I'm going to say don't waste your money on a 1000 quid screen I wouldn't say its worth it. Sure it could be worth it in the Cinerama but that's going to be like 10 quid a piece tops. 3D is nice but kinda pointless. Infact it actually gets in the way a little bit because you've got 3 different images overlapping.
I gess this isn't really what you asked for but I saw your headline-"3D or not 3D..............that is the question" and that got my opinions pumped. I'm not really one to talk, I don't own a 3d screen, I know no one who does and so I have nothing to recommend you.

i would not buy one right away.
The time will come where u will need a new TV anyway.
BY that time 3D will be a no brainer and built into most tvs anyway.

i would not buy one specialy for 3D, but when a new TV is needed i would look after it.

All I have to say is there's already cheap 3D tvs on the market. Saw a 32" or 40"at walmart for 500. And came with 2 glasses I was really tempted to. Buy it

I tried it in a store on one of the Samsung LED's, watching a bit of Aliens vs Monsters.

It's nowhere near worth the money.

You get a very slight added feeling of depth, but nothing more. On top of that, you lose clarity and focus in your peripheral vision, which obviously doesn't happen without "3D".

IYAM, go for an HD projector or a regular 60" LED.

I like 3D and enjoy it largely for gaming, used well in the right games it adds immersion and good spatial awareness. It's not something which should be used in all games, but in the right areas it's a good thing. I recommend you try a variety of different TV sets with a variety of material too.

Most 3D games currently come with some compromises in order to achieve it. The better ones are worth some compromise for what the 3D adds though. In some cases the game is greatly enhanced and made a better game through it. Motorstorm Pacific Rift for example was a mess in 2D - ill defined and hard to see where you are going. In 3D the slightly parred down graphics and 3D effect add greatly to the enjoyment of the game.

One thing I would also mention is that the specs of a 3DTV also make it a good TV for other things in general. Good response time, high refresh rate etc. It's whether the extra outlay you pay is worth the extra cost to you. As I said at the start go and try out a lot of content on different screens. If possible download some 3D vids to a memory stick and take it round with you to give you a benchmark to compare screens.

Thanks everyone, tremendously. Your feedback really helps. I'm actually leaning towards waiting on 3D, and getting a bigger screen now. :)

Oh, I do have one last question. What is meant by "stereoscopic" 3D? I've only heard it mentioned with connection to Uncharted 3 thus far.

Stereoscopic is essentially two proper separate images, as opposed to, for example, anaglyph 3D which is what red/cyan filter glasses do. It's all stereoscopic with modern 3DTV's. The only real differentiator in TV tech (bar LCD vs. Plasma) is passive vs. active. Most sets use active shutter tech. LG make some passive tech screens which rely on polarisation. The upside is it's less susceptible to flicker and glasses are cheap (hence the tech is used in pubs and cinemas). The downside with the TV tech is that you lose half the resolution as alternate lines are used for each eye.

I've played KZ3 on my mates 46" samsung in 3D, and the guns look awesome in 3D, you actually feel like your holding/looking down a gun sight, but the draw distance is rusbish, I could barly focus on anything in the distance, like Erth has said 3D games lower graphics and it makes KZ3 (a pretty game) look like a jagged nightmare.

If you want to do 3D gaming now, get 24" 3D monitor and buy/build a decent PC gaming rig.

Also, you mentioned your gonna wait on 3D and get a bigger screen. To be honest all big TV's now are coming with S3D built in, i've looked at all manufactures 3D sets in Comet, and SONY or Pannasonic is the way to go, SONY is better on looked has a Glass bazzel which looks swift, but if you want a big slim TV go for samsung, but don't get there 3D tv's there glasses suck big donkey balls.

the word Stereoscopic means two images, so basically Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) means you're viewing two different images at same time. So exspect UC3 to have split screen SP or MP.
