What is best for gaming? Plasma or LED?

I've been using a Samsung 50 inch plasma for like 4 years now or so, and i have no complaints or whatsoever. But it's HD ready and not FULL HD. Recently i saw a 60 inch samsung full HD plasma at a friend's house and the difference was rather crystal clear. I've decided to go for a new tv. And my plan is to go 55 or even 60 inch.

I've been looking in the shop and there's all kinds of plasmas and LED's at discount prices. However i'm in no rush and i'm gonna do some thorough research first before buying anything. I've been told by people that LED gives you a ridiculously crisp and clear picture while gaming, but LED also has its problems like clouding and black levels apparently aren't always all that great.

With my plasma i haven't had any real problems except for the image retention, which on my plasma happens quite soon, a still image in a game for too long temporarily burns into the screen and goes away eventually. But it never permanently burns in though. I've also heard that plasma's are faster in terms of response time and LED can be a bit slower in this.

I just want to know what is best for gaming. So in short:

- Needs to be full HD
- 50 inch is ok, but i'd like to go for 55/60 inch.
- Good response time,no lags.
- Affordable... (my budget is around 800-1000 euros)

Plasma for the simple fact it's response times are much, much lower. LED's are very slow compared to plasma and aren't really suitable for fast paced gaming or music games.

Thanks man, that is a clear answer. But in what kind of ways will a game be slower? Let's say for example i play GTA IV and i enter a car, there's gonna be a slight delay on a LED and on a plasma not at all? Is that kinda how i should see it?

Look man, there's no real answer for what's better. Best solution is to go in store & judge for yourself, I'd personally recommend a Sony Bravia above all else but if you insist on getting a Plasma, Panasonic Vieras are fine.

in 2010 i Saw an article of the best HD TV for gaming, and believe it or not the best was the Aquos form sharp, second the sony bravia, and third a sony plasma tv, i know you mentioned LED or plasma, and i dont know if this in fact change with newer models, but based on that article the best one was the LCD Aquos from sharp.
P.S google best HD Tv for gaming and i think you will find it, if i dont recall wrong i think it was from CNET

I can go to the store and bring my 360 with me, but i just can't be trying out several models there, that's just not how it goes. So i rather ask from people's personal experiences.

I've noticed that LG plasmas support 600hz, so a Panasonic doesn't? A friend of mine actually had a Sharp Aquos and he complained about several games that they have incredible screen-tearing, while on another tv, there wasn't. He wasn't happy with it at all.

A slow response time is kinda like having a bit of extra lag in a way, it's exactly the same as online lag. Controls will feel more sluggish but you'll also get ghosting or blur when swinging the camera around or if things are darting around quickly on the screen. If you're playing a 60FPS games like CoD you'll notice the blur loads as you turn quickly. You'll also be at a disadvantage as you'll literally be behind other players, only by milliseconds but it's still something that'll effect your game.

Also, make sure you have a google of any prospective TV you like the look of for input lag which isn't usually listed as that will affect response time too.

As for response time on that...i don't think i can go wrong with that one. I guess if they own that tech, that they'll use that on every plasma...but i'm not sure and gonna be researching that. As for ghosting and motion blur you talked about...i remember when i played some games on my bro's Sony Bravia LCD...i noticed some very annoying ghosting going on, really almost making me tired/dizzy actually.

@Hunam, I've got a nasty Chinese built fHD, LCD in my room & I never notice any ghosting effects or anything like it, even when watching the V8 Supercars-Point is, this problem you're talking about more or less disappeared at least 3 years ago. Also, I'd highly recommend going against LG, they may look spectacular on paper but they never, ever live up to that hype, obviously I don't need to mention to be wary of odd Asian names.

Well i never buy LG anyway, they were the old GoldStar brand, i remember those on the VHS era and they were low quality and the SD TV as well, it was a bad brand then and i believe they are a bad brand now, fool me once is your fault fool me twice is mine.

Well if your friend had problem with the Aquos well forget what i did said, nice thing when i purchase my LCD i went for a panasonic viera and not the aquos, it was cheaper

Plasma's are definitely better for gaming in my opinion. Their response time and contrast ratio, just blows standard LCD's out of the water (with the exception of LED LCD screens as they have similar contrast ratios). The only real downside to them is they don't last as long as LCD's do. But as long as you plan to replace your telly every 6 years minimum you should be fine. Panasonic usually do the best Plasmas. Panasonic also use 600Hz technology BTW.

So LED LCD do have a similar response time to plasmas? Good to know that Panasonic also have 600hz technology. By the way, do you really notice that during gaming, the 600hz tech that is?

As for LG, my friend who has that 60inch LG plasma...i don't hear any complaints from him and i must say..it looked goddamn awesome too :D.
However...if its between a panasonic and LG..yeah i'll go Panny.

Yeah i'm confused about that too, i think its just LED. Even though in the stores i keep saying LCDs and LEDs and to be quite honest i don't even know the real difference between the two.

I'm gonna try to sell my samsung plasma, but seeing how brand new hd ready plasmas are only 400 to 600 euros now...i doubt i'll even get 300 for this one.

If you're going Plasma, look no further than Panasonic. I hear the G25's are particularly good, if a little old.

LED TV's are LCD TV's with a LED backlight (gives alot better colours and brightness).

LED's will have a higher refresh rate that standard LCD TV's, but they are no way near to Plasma's. They are usually about 100Hz. Don't get it wrong though, 100HZ is still really good. 600HZ is a little overkill if you ask me. I just think LED TV's give unnatural colours due to the brightness, whereas Plasma's give better more natural colours with deeper blacks.

It all goes down to personal perspective, I would always choose an LCD over a Plasma every time. If you are running your TV all the time, you're better off with an LCD, they're cheaper to run & generally last longer. Because they're made of glass, glare is also a huge problem personally. There's no doubt that in the right setting, a good plasma model will be superior to a comparable LCD but these 'right settings' aren't easy to find.

It really comes down to a personal preference. Take a look at the contenders with the same source material in a well set up shop if you can. Don't worry too much about motion flow and 600hz stuff for gaming as these processes introduce lag and will be turned off when you switch the tv to gaming mode. More recent LCD tvs are not so far behind plasma in terms of lag, and lots of people will not even notice the difference, but if you do then plasma is the better option.

Personally I prefer the overall look of an LCD picture, but that's what I prefer, there are no hard and fast rules for these things. Look at reviews etc, but the most important opinion is your own.

Well it used to be that plasmas used alot of power and thus cost alot of money every year but it's not like that anymore at all. What do you mean with the right setting, you mean settings on the tv itself? I used to fiddle alot with the settings and then i decided to reset everything back to default (movie setting) and i dont want it any different now.

Yeah at the end of the day it's my own opinion that matters. When the time is there, i'm probably gonna check out a LED tv in the store and also a plasma. Then i can make up my mind.

@Moonwalker1982, I mean surroundings. They have drastically decreased the power usage but they still drain around twice as much as LCDs.
@DrDamn, 100% agreed, I too prefer the more natural look of an LCD picture, every plasma I see in store has something off about it, whether it be artifacts or a bad coating.

Holy crap, next week starting from monday to sunday this particular store has a very nice discount thing going on. Basically..the bigger the inch, the more discount you get. I'm looking for 50 inch or larger, it means 16% discount, quite nice i'd say.

I would love to go to this store with my 360 and try it out on a LED and plasma, but the problem is...this store is so busy for the next two weeks, i can't do that. On a website where it was about plasma and LCD/LED it said that LED provides a noticeable clearer picture while plasma have the better response time. I of course want the best picture quality available and maybe i won't even notice the response time problem on LED. But i AM kinda taking a risk, blindly buying a LED tv.

Thanks for that but it seems like they are reviewing different models than we have here. Correct me if i'm wrong, don't they always have different model numbers for each country?

Either way..

I just went to the store and i'm pretty sure next week i'll have a new plasma. It's a Panasonic TX-P50U20E, now costs 800, will be 672 euros. Too bad i can't find any reviews though. But don't they always say....you can't go wrong with a Panasonic plasma?

Great sites people. But i've made up my mind. I'm not gonna go for that discount next week, cause they have alot of old models. And sure..there's the Panasonic G30, but its around the price of a VT20 (webshop) and that one has much newer technology and features(3D). So i'm just gonna take it easy, save up money and sell my current plasma..and go for this one.

VT20 was one of my considerations when I was buying last year. Certainly a great TV and the best 3D TV in terms of picture quality too. Particularly as you currently have plasma and are happy with that. Panasonic do make the best plasmas.

Only minor downsides I saw were the Panasonic 3D glasses are a bit of a design over practicality cock-up - big holes to left and right can cause issues with side lighting. They weren't particularly comfortable either. You should be able to pick up 3rd party or updated Panasonic ones by now though. AVForums test also found issues with 50Hz content - you might want to check that. Again the overall review was very positive though.

I'm not really buying the tv for 3D,it's just awesome that it happens to have it. My eyes for some reason can't fully see 3D. When i went to Avatar 3D, i just didn't see alotta things my friends did see. But ah well...anway, i'm kind of in a dilemma now...there's also this Samsung.

The Samsung PS50C7700

Also has 3D, ultra slim design and all that. Also the price is better. While the Panasonic is 1155, the Samsung is 1049. Quite a difference....i however can't find many reviews of the Samsung.
