First off I'd like start with the name Vita. As the name for the product I think it’s a bad move, a really bad move. The word vita apparently means 'life', to me this feels alot like the wii approach (wii supposedly meaning we as in we can all play it). Not to mention the very sound of the word feels like a family friendly name, a name that appeals to children. It feels like it should be some family friendly console but the thing is, it’s not. It's something that only 'hardcore' or heavy duty gamers would take much interest in. The PSP was the same; it aimed for the more serious gamers and left the causal in the dust. The 'vita' feels like it’s gonna do the same thing. Big hardware specs, Dual Analogy sticks, Big Screens, nice graphics, theses aren't things kids care about, they're things that we care about. The more serious gamers gonna care how much RAM it's got and now powerful the CPU is and how big the screen is in inches. So why has it got a name that means 'life', as in families and growing old? That marketing approach, to me, makes no sense.
It should have a name that appeals to people who take gaming practically as a second profession, not a little pass time. Although actually the hole handheld market is more of a causal thing. A really badass gamer is just going to play on his (or hers) 12GB RAM, GeForce GTX 590 and some AMD CPU Computer rather than play a portable. But then you can't bring an Alien desktop with you on your 10 hour drive, can you?
Now on to the WiiU. Basically I'm not interested. The controller looks uncomfortable to hold, too big to hold for more than a few hours. Also it looks impossible to press the actual buttons and use the touch screen at the same time. The other thing is I think it looks ridiculous. It looks like a child's tablet, like one of those interactive story things. Also how are you going to look at both the controller screen and then your consoles main screen? It works for the DS simply because their right next to each other but when they could be more than meter apart its going to be impossible to focus on both at the same time.
Also if the hardware is only a little bit better than the 360/PS3 then what's the point? Why should I fork out another 200 quid for the same thing? On the other hand if it’s much more powerful and can do way more things I'd rather play it on a normal standard controller rather than fuck around with some massive block.
I mean I could go on about this all night, there's hundreds of things I'm not really liking the look of and its barely been announced. Maybe I should hold my tongue until more is released.
All in all it mostly looks like a gimmick, maybe it will work and maybe people will use in some really innovative ways but at the moment I have no intensions of experiencing them. Sorry Nintendo you've not sold me... yet.
